Turkey goalkeeper Rustu Recber has confirmed he will stay at Fenerbahce for another season, despite a host of bids from top clubs.

"Before the World Cup, I told the fans that I would still be at Fenerbahce next season," he explained.

"I received offers before the tournament began and have received more since it finished, which is not a surpise as I put in some good performances over there.

"Manchester United and teams of similar stature have made offers, but the fact remains that I made a promise to the fans. Maybe I'll live to regret the decision, but life goes on."

Rustu, 29, has just a year left on his Fener contract and admitted that it could be a different story for him next summer. "We will see what happens. Maybe then it will be time to move on," he said.

The former Antalyaspor No 1 was one of the stars of the World Cup as he inspired Turkey to semi-finals. English sides Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester United were thought to be frontrunners in the race for his signature.

Yep, a 29-year old player got big offers but gave up on his biggest and who knows, last chance, to make a big move. No doubt...

Read between the lines, he wants to move for a free and a signing on fee. I think Ferna will want to sell him rather than let him see out his contract IMHO.
:D

RECBER NO GO!

I didn't want him anyway. We are not despirate for a keeper, we need a defender or two.

Assuming Utd. are looking to replace Barthez, who are the potential replacements?

1. Rustu Recber - He claims to have turned down a move....the signs are there the Fena might sell him as Marcus suggested.

2. Thomas Sorensen - Sunderland have just signed Thomas Myhre, who is a good keeper, maybe with the intention of selling Sorensen for a large fee - to allow them to spend more. But then again, maybe not.

3. David James - Possibility - West Ham may be willing to do a deal.

4. Paul Robinson - Although I've never seen him linked with us at any time, I feel he might be a good signing - he is a great keeper and Leeds may be willing to do a deal... 10m for Bowyer to Scouse is almost done....that leaves 5m more...PR could be signed for 5m(I can keep dreamin')

5. Mickael Landreau - What happened to the rumours linking us with him? After he played so well against us last season, they just wouldn't stop. I was impressed with him on the first match (at Nantes) but not so much at OT.

6. Stipe Pletikosa - We were linked with him early this year...I know he is Croatian and plays for Hadjuk Split - anybody know anything bout him?

My thoughts too. Out of all the keepers mentioned, I cannot see any being that much better than Barthez. Let's face it, any keeper can make errors. See Kahn in the WC final, of all games.

Speaking of that ugly bastard, England scored 5 against him, which doesn't make him any worse. Fact is, five goals point to something else being wrong with Germany. Defence anyone? How good/solid does our defence look? Barthez is not the problem, let's make sure Barthez is just a spectator!

Bottom line, the goalkeeper we already have on our books can give a season as good if not better than any goalkeeper in the world. He's had torrid times, but we've seen him at his best before and he can be the best.

As for Rustu, my Turkish sources claim he is a true 'soldier' who is not going to leave Fenerbahce with nothing. So I don't think he'll stay another 12 months and then leave on a free. Doesn't make much sense either, he's 29 and at his peak, after a terrific world cup, and he may not get an offer half as good next summer compared to what he may now.

I really think he just wants to stay at Fenerbahce. Cheers for the loyalty.

Why the feck do we need him anyway? We've got our clown! ;)
