Yes, I'm taking some liberties with the title...

Some of the players that really performed last night have come straight from the academy -

Hannibal (20)
Garnacho (19)
Gore (19)

and then there's Mainoo (18) who'll be back soon.

Some of the other players who are in the same age bracket, but not strictly academy players -
Pellestri (21)
Hojlund (20)
Amad (21)

Are we seeing the start of a group of players who will grow in the team together and supplant the first team players in the next year or two? I can definitely see a clear pathway to first team football for the likes of Hannibal, Garnacho, and Mainoo - I think they all have the ability, it's just a case of whether they get their head down and focus enough.

Similarly, for Hojlund and Amad (although not technically academy products) both have a future here. Pellestri as well I think can stake a claim here, but from reading the player performance thread, the jury is out for a lot of you.

Gore is one I haven't watched a lot of previously - but from his performance last night, he looks great, and mature beyond his years.

So, what say you?

ten hags tits.

I only just read your post after I had posted and yes I think we are beginning to see the beginning of something special, we have a good influx of young talent coming through at the moment I can see a lot of academy graduates in the first 11 next season.

the only bad thing is the lack of good defenders coming through considering that's what we need most at the moment with all our injuries.

Totally agree, a lot depends on whether they can keep producing consistently, but they showed they have the potential last night, happy for some positive news for once!

Just... dont.
Without being too negative with you mate I honestly dont see it (foremost football wise except prehaps Garnacho) and at the end of the day the Babes and the class of 92 were all british meaning they wont f... off to Real Madrid if they happen to be good (Becks got kicked out and always wanted to play despite that being a good decision by SAF in hindsight). I hope your right and we have a squad core there but Im not holding my breath

What I like about ETH is that he makes the young lads earn their game time. It felt like ,under previous managers, that the Academy lads were thrown on for a few minutes to gain brownie points from the fans/pundits and/or so they could later say "I gave him his debut".

ETH makes them work harder for their minutes but then when they come in, they seem desperate to prove they deserve it

Garnacho and Hannibal are as much academy players as Amad and Pellistri, as in you can hardly credit the academy for the former two.

Garnacho was bought for 400k at 16 years old and Hannibal was bought for 10m at 16 years old. They played in the clubs academy but you can barely credit the club for developing them.

We claimed Pogba as an academy player and he was bought from Le Havre. If you suggest that a true academy player should have been in the club before signing his first professional deal, that becomes rather slim as you'll strictly be limited to kids born in and around Manchester.

as long as a player has played in the Man Utd Academy and got promoted to the first team he shall be cateogorized as a Man Utd Academy grauduate.

just like a kid is not excluded from being called Etonian no matter he joined the school at 13 or 18

Don’t forget Hansen-Aaroen, he could be another Ten Hag’s tots to watch.

Any players that are at the club before signing their first professional contract (around 18 yo) are considered academy products. Garnacho and Hannibal obviously fulfil this criteria, and it's why they're considered homegrown as well.

We've definitely got the makings of a decent set of youngsters coming through and hopefully they can supplement the first team, but the first team needs to be operating at a high level to enable us to bring them through and give them the best chance to succeed. Last night was a great game for the likes of Gore, where he got a lot of time and space on the ball and it eases him into more competitive matches.

I often wonder how many of our Fergie-era players would have made it under a different manager and/or setup, it definitely helped bringing some of those through into a well drilled machine.

Gore, Hannibal, Mainoo, IHA - do we also have anyone that not plays CM that might make it here?

Shea Lacey is a wide player and current flavour of the month.

I’d also like to see what Kambwala (centre half) does with a full season of football after his injury woes, but another to watch.

Hopefully Erik is still here when Lacey breaks through, there's another kid whose name escapes me but is very two footed.

Alvaro Fernandez could be in with a shout next season if we don't sell him. Further down the line, Harry Amass and Shea Lacey should be in with a shout I would imagine if they carry on

Errr what. 16 is a child, you absolutely can credit the academy for developing them. They're hardly the finished product at 16 are they? Do we only count 8 year olds or someting now?

Scholes and Giggs were 14 and Neville and Beckham 16 (guess they are not an academy player then either?)

We signed Garnacho at 16 and he made his senior debut less than a year later. We barely developed him.

Look forward to rolling my eyes in 30 years at all the "Class of 22" branding exercises.

Honestly I havent. I watched Pellestri and Hannibal and nothing suggests that we are witnessing anything mentioned in this thread. Say Mainoo (who is 18) and Garnacho make it thats 2 players while the mentioned generations had 5. Now that you brought up the subject how would you describe Mainoo?

I wouldn’t read too much into an EFL Cup game.

I don’t see the likes of Hannibal and Pellestri making it as top level players. Garnacho could do though. I haven’t seen enough of Mainoo, Gore or Amad.

Pellistri in particular, won't make the grade I feel. Hannibal has a better chance and can be at least a squad player here. Mainoo is a nice mix of technique and physicality. Skilful, good dribbler and passer. Sound decision making and composure. He has an effortless strut. All in all he's a big talent and it will be interesting to see what type of player he develops into. I see him in a deep midfield role, perhaps as a playmaker.

We have talent, and a few have already shown a good enough level when given the chance.

We need to integrate young players and build on that talent.

I like them all. They all have energy and very good technique. Will they all make it? Probably not as first choice but they all could have places in the squad as a lot of the players in the current squad are on life support right now.

My thoughts exactly. If nothing else they could save us millions on squad fillers. I think all of them can contribute.
