Football is about glory, it is about doing things
Someone has just bumped a 2 year old Lassana Diarra to City thread to include an article claiming that we are interested in him. Why? The new article has absolutely nothing to do with the original thread, and it's not the only time. All the forums are full of threads which have been irrelevantly bumped.

Has the recent mod fetish for merging any threads which feature the same word in the title contributed to this bizarre recent trend?

Bump

Has anyone else got a craving for pancakes?

Bump

I'm stuck on level 4 in Empire Strikes Back on Lego Start Wars on the Wii.
I have 9 cannisters but cannot find the last one.
Can anyone help?

If it's on topic, then I don't think the age of the thread matters. If it's only loosely related then yes, I agree, bumping a two year old thread is a little bit silly. In this case, the topic is about the rumour of a transfer rather than the player himself, so it should have been done in a new thread.

The problem is that there are no guidelines on what to do, and there are way too many repeat threads on this forum. That's why things get merged, because the vast majority of people take absolutely no responsibility to even check if there is a recent thread on the matter at hand.

Problem is if you create a new thread then everyone jumps on you with the typical "Use the Search function"..."Look a little down the page" etc.

So even if it's unrelated people just bump.

."Look a little down the page"

Not for a 2 year old thread.

Search function should be used, but then you have to decide if what you want to post is on the same topic. In this case, is the topic about the player or was the topic about his possible transfer to another club? In either of those scenarios, then a new thread is appropriate. Now, if there was an old thread about the player's possible transfer to United and the new rumour is about the possibility of a transfer of the player to United, then there is a merit for the bump, as the topic was always about the possible transfer of that player to United.

Spot on Weaste. It would be nice if:

1) Mods could outline a set of hard and fast rules for bumping old threads/starting new threads
2) Caftards used their two brain cells apiece to work out whether or not the old thread is relevant to the new information.

Its part of the forum guidelines. The rule is that posters should PM a mod or admin if they want to bump a thread that is older than 12 months old. The Mods can then modify the thread title to avoid any confusion.

That's the key. It really shouldn't be too difficult.

There's no need for hard and fast rules if people use common sense.
