I understand this is a recent rule on the Caf to clamp down on 'unnecessary' thread (presumably to minimise bandwidth usage? Not very sure of that). However, I do feel it limits the discussions we have on the football forum to a large extent. Creating random threads as in the General might clutter the Footie forum a bit, but that's how it was for a good 10 years on the Caf, and it worked pretty well then.

Threads die their natural deaths, and thats probably the balance that should be maintained. There 20-30 page threads include several topics worthy of individual threads, and a lot of posters who would otherwise have posted on those threads end up not doing so in the mega threads.

I don't know if more people or the mods feel the same way. If someone could clarify this, it would be helpful.

It's simple really, create a new thread unless what you want to say is already covered by another thread that's been active within the last few months.

Bumping threads that's been inactive in ages should only happen if it adds something to the original post.

Do NOT try jamming a new topic into an already existing thread just because some people have told you that creating new threads is evil. A thread about Butt, Gaz, Scholes and Beckham as kids should not halfway through and 4 years later be turned into a thread about Fergie feeling bad that he let Phil Neville and Butt go.

Do not be afraid to create a new thread. Even if Weaste makes a mean face.

Take Chris' thread here: https://www.redcafe.net/f6/nani-rafael-317622/
It's much neater and easier to discuss because he created a new and specific thread rather than jamming it into a thread about how Nani is now the best winger in the country.

Likewise see Pogue's thread on Fletch: https://www.redcafe.net/f6/good-fletchers-back-317631/
There are plenty threads on Fletcher that he could probably have bumped after a quick search, but what would that archive? Then you'd just have a discussion intertwined among other discussions on Fletcher with none of them actually being related to the original post = A mess.

The thread title and the original post should match the content of the entire thread. And if what you have to see doesn't follow that then just create a new thread.

That's exactly what i mean. Noone seems to want to start new thread. Discussing all things Arsenal in the Rivals Squad-Arsenal thread is silly, for example. For example if someone wants to talk about AvB at Tottenham specifically, they revert to bumping some fkin Tottenham thread or some AvB. Is this general retarded behaviour? Because Top seems to be suggesting quite the opposite.

Grrrrrrr.

I completely agree. I'm personally tired of seeing the same threads bumped. It really stifles fresh discussion.

I got "Wayne Rooney is world class" thread renamed to "The Wayne Rooney Thread" or something because every single thing about him was posted there and invariable turned into a discussion on him being world class. But still, everything related to one person/club shouldn't be bundled into one thread IMO.

Well the mods seem to be suggesting the same thing...it's just a strange habit everyone seems to have caught for some reason.

Any possible solution to this, mods? Apart from growling menacingly when someone announces that Papiss Cisse failed a drugs test in the 'Papiss Cisse is World Class' thread.

There's really no logical argument for bumping old threads. They're usually long, have misleading thread titles, and are bumped by posters who want to draw attention to themselves by linking a current development to an ancient discussion. Starting a new thread is a better way to have a fresh discussion about a not so new topic and is usually far easier to navigate as well.

It is mostly common sense. We don't want 15 virtually identical threads on the first 2 pages but we also don't want 5 year old threads bumped merely because they mention the same player.

It's a general trend on internet forums these days due to forum Nazis like Weaste insisting on people never creating new threads.

We try to change the mindset of posters on here regarding bumping threads, by locking bumped threads, but it doesn't seem to be working.

My understanding is that if a thread is a year old you guys want a new one made, right?

When I was first on the Caf people would bump a lot of old conversations, mostly to catch people talking nonsense. This seems to happen a lot less these days, almost never. So I can see the appeal in a new thread, especially if it's more specific.

But it is nice to be able to look back on what people thought when Cleverley first made his debut in the same thread that's still active.
