what a crap rumour. :wenger:

Gianluigi Buffon admitted to doubts over his future and it’s reported he’d accept Manchester United in exchange for Nemanja Vidic plus £20m.

Juventus have repeatedly stated they will not sell their goalkeeper, but the likely failure to qualify for the Champions League has precipitated a change of heart.

“The decision does not depend on Champions League qualification, but we must carry on in these circumstances and at the end of the season we’ll see what happens,” confessed Buffon.

Tuttosport newspaper now suggests that Manchester United are the more likely destination, as they can offer a large cash sum plus defender Vidic.

They need an heir to the ageing Edwin Van der Sar, while Manchester City also have the funds to intervene.

Bayern Munich have been linked with Buffon before as a replacement for Hans Jorg Butt.

Juventus already have their eye on next season with several options open to them, including Cagliari goalkeeper Federico Marchetti, Palermo’s Salvatore Sirigu and Villarreal man Diego Lopez.

Tuttosport points out that Diego Lopez shares an agent with Rafa Benitez, who is still considering an offer to take over at Juve.

The Liverpool manager would be given a large budget to revolutionise the squad and likely names are Lyon’s Michel Bastos and PSV Eindhoven starlet Ibrahim Afellay.

Maybe it just Nemanja Vidic's postcard + 20m. Fair deal.

Buffon + 30M or 40M = Vidic.

Especially if he performs like he did yesterday.

let´s say that he comes... then we all see that Edwin is better than buffon

Yeah, that's why Buffon took the first choice GK spot away from vdS when both were at Juve...

but in all fairness, VDS was inconsistent when he was at Juve.

He is a totally different goalkeeper now, and at his time at United, he has cemented his name amongst the worlds greatest keepers.

Juventus goalkeeper Buffon heading for Manchester? - Transfers - ESPN Soccernet

Gianluigi Buffon could be heading for Manchester this summer in one of the biggest transfer deals of the close season, and Italian sources believe City are poised to outbid United for a man ranked by many as the world's number one goalkeeper.

Gianluigi Buffon could be set to leave Juventus this summer

United beat City on Saturday to restore their chances of the Premier League title and consequently damage their blue rivals' hopes of qualifying for Champions League football, which would hugely enhance City's ability to attract the best players in the summer transfer market. But if money talks, City will clearly be shouting the loudest when it comes to making the right kind of offer to tempt Buffon.

Italian reports suggest United will offer Nemanja Vidic plus cash for Buffon, while City have the ability to match Juventus' £30 million asking price. Sir Alex Ferguson is reluctant to lose Vidic, but there has been speculation all season that the centre half wants to quit for a warmer climate as his wife has failed to settle in England.

The biggest stumbling block for Ferguson, though, is Buffon's wage demands of £4 million after tax, and with a new high rate of tax imposed in England, that would make Buffon by far the highest earner at Old Trafford.

Juventus have suffered a wreck of a season and are looking to rebuild. Buffon, a prime asset who could be cashed in by the Bianconeri, said of a potential move from Juventus, who he joined from Parma in 2001 for a then world-record £23 million fee: "The decision does not depend on where we finish in the table whether or not we qualify for the Champions League, although we must carry on in these circumstances and at the end of the season we'll see what happens."

Buffon was one of a number of players who stayed with Juventus despite an enforced 2006 relegation following the calciopoli corruption scandal.

And Soccernet's Italian sources revealed on Sunday: "Three weeks ago Roberto Bettega [Juve's vice director general] said that Gigi was untouchable, and that he will stay with Juve. However, three years ago Juve made a pact with their players, a gentleman's agreement, that if they stayed when they were relegated to the Serie B, they would be allowed to go after three years if the club failed to get back to their glory days.

"But for Buffon to leave Juve, the price will have to be right. The fee is £30 million and the player requires £4 million after tax. As Barcelona and Real have good keepers, the only destination can be England, and while United need a new top goalkeeper to replace Edwin Van der Sar, City have the resources to buy Buffon."

Blues boss Roberto Mancini has reportedly endorsed City's interest in Buffon, even though Shay Given was purchased from Newcastle for a significant fee in January 2009. Bayern Munich have been linked with Buffon before as a replacement for Hans-Jorg Butt, himself a stopgap after the failure to adequately replace Oliver Kahn.

Juventus already have their eye on a Buffon replacement in Cagliari goalkeeper Federico Marchetti while Villarrreal's Argentine keeper Diego Lopez is a target who just so happens to share an agent with Rafael Benitez, who is still understood to be considering an offer to take over at Juve, where he would be granted a large budget to buy several players including Lyon's Michel Bastos and PSV Eindhoven starlet Ibrahim Afellay.

Would be great if we got him, but definitely not for an exchange with Vidic.

My guess is Buffon's contract is running low, and he wants a new one, but this rumour is completely shite, there are only two teams in my opinion that Vidic would seriously consider moving to, and neither of them are Juventus.

says it all doesnt it

pure speculation

either he wants a new contract , or its a come and get me plea for someone like city

20m plus Vidic, ridiculous.

20m plus the best defender around, for a goalkeeper that hasn't been the same in about 2 seasons. Not a hope.

Vice - versa....

Juventus want to discuss a swap deal with Manchester United for their defender Nemanja Vidic.

Tuttosport says Juve goalkeeper Gigi Buffon - plus a major cash component - will be offered to United for Serbia international Vidic.

Vidic has declared in the last week he is happy at United and wants to stay.

For his part, Buffon has hinted he's ready to leave crisis club Juve in the summer: “The decision does not depend on Champions League qualification, but we must carry on in these circumstances and at the end of the season we’ll see what happens."

That's more like it, Buffon plus £15m would probably reflect Vidic's value. We're not going to accept it anyway, Vidic isn't going to play for Juventus who won't be in Champions League next season when he could go to Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Rubbish, I can bet my life on it - Vidic will be here next season.

I'm saying it's arguable; you could make a convincing case for it. He's been one of the best goalkeepers to play in the premiership and in terms of his age he's just coming into his prime.

Good shot stoper, pretty shite at commanding his box and he's hopeless at coming for crosses.

If that puts him up there as one of the best our league has to offer, then it's a sad state of (goalkeeping) affairs.

I don't think it's controversial to list Shay Given as one of the best goalkeepers in the league; most pundits and sportswriters share that view. He has a bad game once in a blue moon (no pun intended), is a world-class shot stopper and has good distribution. I don't enjoy praising City players but for me he's utd standard.

Buffon has been terrible in the last year or so. Losing Vidic to get Buffon would be the most incredibly stupid deal ever.
