Childhood hero of mine. Then I tired of him. Then I grew up and realised he's a genius when he is a genius. None of his albums are solid, but some of his songs are stunning. So unlike with the consistently brilliant David Bowie (through the 70s at least) it should be possible to compile a top five Springlist.

No particular order:

Thunder Road
Lost in the flood
Atlantic City
Brilliant Disguise
Rosalita

EDIT: Forgot about Cover Me.

The second list:

The Ghost of Tom Joad
Murder Incorporated
Streets of Philadelphia
Hungry Heart
Darkness on the Edge of Town

Waitin' on a Sunny Day
The River
Into the Fire
Born to Run
41 Shots

Tough to do a Top 5, has far too many great songs but here goes:

Thunder Road
Backstreets
Incident on 57th Street
The Promise
Atlantic City

Can't agree with this for one moment (Born To Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, The River, Nebraska are all brilliant), but here goes for my top 5*:

Born to Run
Racing in the Street
Jungleland
Independence Day
Stolen Car

*which would be entirely different this time tomorrow!

Cover Me
Born in the USA
Nebraska
Dancing in the Dark
Born to Run

Fecking hard one to whittle down to five, again very likely to change. Shit cakes, I forgot the River.

Guess I have 6.

In a more mellow mood:-

Ghost of Tom Joad
41 Shots
Streets of Philedelphia
Secret Garden
Highway 29

In a more upbeat mood:-

Born In The USA
Born To Run
Girls In Their Summer Clothes
Dancing In The Dark
Glory Days

Yes, I know I have completely cheated! :)

Springsteen is the sort of artist you appreciate as a novice music fan before you discover that Tom Waits exists.

Oooh, musical snobbery. I've never come across THAT before! ;)

The great thing about music is that there's always someone out there to discover and you tend to find them when you're ready for them.

for me it comes down to studio releases vs the live versions

Studio

Brilliant disguise
Badlands
Philadelphia
Because the night
Candys room

Live
The River
Born To Run
Born in the USA
Nebraska
No surrender

But there are so many more. He along with Billy Joel are Iconic American folk tellers.

In no particular order

The River
Adam Raised A Cain
Tenth Avenue Freeze Out
Cover Me
Jungleland

Not his material but the Seeger sessions is a brilliant album
