Hypothetical, if you had a trump card which allowed you to bring one player into the squad who wasn't selected, to strengthen your team, who would it be and why?

And bonus question; which one player from history would you choose?

As an England fan, for me it would be Marcus Rashford and Ashley Cole.

I'm not English, but for England, I think it's easily Maguire if missing out due to injury counts. Second choice is easily Rashford after him.

Gordon can replicate some of Rashford's biggest qualities, but there's no one in the squad who can replace Maguire...Branthwaite was the most suited to that so I don't know why Southgate didn't take him over the likes of Dunk, Konsa, etc.

Good point re: Maguire, also think Rashford is a good shout.

I agree with both of them as it's obviously the left side that needs sorting out. It's difficult to consider past players without wanting to take Bryan Robson or Bobby Charlton though.

Put them in, at work I have had Charlton, Moore, Hoddle, Barnes etc.

English player who would improve them the most from history might be Scholes around 2006, lacking someone to dictate the play and Rice would be better if he had someone with him who could do it. Or Ashley Cole just for functionality due to not having a left-back.

Of current players, Grealish to hug the left touchline and hold the ball would be create space for others I feel. They don't really have any good left-backs even in reserve.

For other teams, Italy have some decent defenders and midfielders but imagine any of their top forwards instead of Scamacca - Vieri, Rossi, Del Piero, Totti, Zola, Baggio etc. They could do with Tonali or Verratti of current players.

Probably Rashford. If not, Angel Gomes.

From history in terms of players I've seen play, it's a toss up between Ashley Cole, Michael Carrick or Rio Ferdinand. Specifically targeting the problem positions in the current squad.

On the same vein, I'd say Carrick would be perfect for this midfield. 2012 Carrick, just screening and metronoming

Cole is a great shout tbh. Solves the left side issue and can get forward.

For Germany:

From history Gerd Müller - greatest striker ever would end the Havertz/Füllkrug discussion for us, no more explanation needed.

From current players it's really difficult as I very much agreed on Nagelsmann's squad selection. But I would have chosen ter Stegen as first choice and that would mean dropping Neuer from the squad completely as he is one of those who can't be trusted to sit on the bench peacefully. So my answer has to be Alexander Nübel as new third choice keeper.

From history too?

Well then I'd have prime Gazza and of the current lot probably Maguire because I don't think we left out anyone major really.

I'd play:

------------------Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire Trippier
---------------Rice--Mainoo------------
Palmer---------Gazza------Gordon
----------------------Kane

I know I'd have to bench Bellingham but prime Gazza would be the best player at this tournament.

France needs Zidane, Henry, Ribéry, Vieira, Petit, etc.
They have those types of players, a variation of them.
Zidane - Griezmann
Henry - Mbappe
Ribery - Dembele
Vieira - Tchouaméni
Petit - Rabiot

Bar maybe Mbappe, none of them are as good as the originals, but then again, the other teams aren’t exactly filled with sheer quality neither, its a sad state of affairs really, that a player as limited as Tchouaméni cost 85 million pounds.

Footballers earn too much money these days, to run a lot, and pass sideways.

Its a farce.

Yes, there is too much money in sports, just like in politics :(

And, you’re right. With the exception of Mbappé, the current group is not as good as the originals. I have been disappointed by most French players and don’t feel excited about any new prospect from France or other teams, at least for now.

As a Denmark fan, I'd probably bring in Matt O'Riley. In terms of past players the obvious answer would be Michael Laudrup, but I think it might be better to go for someone with more speed, as we already have decent playmakers. So maybe Brian Laudrup or Preben Elkjær.

Past - Ashley Cole
Present - Jack Grealish

I wouldnt mind Arjen Robben in our national team. Atleast one world class player attacking the opponent would be really helpfull

Ofcourse Cruijff, Bergkamp, van Basten or Gullit would also be a (slight?) improvement over Memphis/Malen/Gakpo

For present players who missed the Euros... obviously Frenkie

I recall Robben being the primary reason Netherlands went far in 2014. Soon as he had a quieter game, they struggled and looked like LVG’s United. This current side would be a finals contender with him.

 No chance!
I would have loved ZZ at United, feck Antoine!

Zidane was a one-trick pony who could only play at one position and built his entire legacy based on two finals in which he scored. Then ghosted in 80% of games he played in.

He was part of the biggest bottle jobs in Juve history. Real Madrid went from routine winners to not winning anything for years during his time there.

In his entire career he scored only 125 goals. Griezmann already has 268.

Griezmann can play in multiple positions and is simply the better all-around player, a better athlete. Also scored more goals for France than Zidane.

The Caf never disappoints.
