Now the highest run scorer in test cricket history.

Better than Tendulkar.

Also older and played in more tests (i think about the number of tests)

But congrats to Lara, he has been fantastic throughout his career. If west indian cricket could sort themselves out they might have had a team worthy of Lara

Nope, Lara 121 tests, Tendulkar 123 and about 1100 runs less.

Well played Lara, also a great knock by him under pressure.

To compare stats you don't look at how many test matches they have played, you look at how many innings they have played. Brian Lara has played 213 innings and Tendulkar 198 innings.

Well then you have to take into account who each team played and under what circumstances. From what I understand the records use the number of matches played not the number of innings.

Both are great players and there isn't much between them at all. They have both played under intense pressure due to them playing in weak teams over the years. You always thought India's chances depended on how Tendulkar did and West Indies depend on Lara, that is a measure of how great they have been. They have also both played their best cricket against the best team over the last 10 or so years. IIRC they both average over 50 against Australia which shows their overall averages don't flatter them. Many players these days have high averages due to them smacking the lesser teams about.

When you compare batsman you should always use the number of innings they have played. Their averages are also worked out using the number of innings they have played, not the number of test matches. It makes no sense to compare the number of test matches played as I have shown.

To be honest the whole Lara better than Tendulkar thing is just a running gag.

Two great players who have played exceptionally well over the past several years for their countries.

There isn't much seperating the two.

Tendulkar has hardly done anything this year.

The way england are batting they could do with a bit of help from you.

:D

I'd be an excellent number 5. Play out the new ball after Bell's ton while Pieterson warms up in the nets.

just make sure you have got enough protection.

I watched his innings until he reached his half century and then decided to have an afternoon nap.

Words can't justify how pissed off I am.

Congrats to Lara. A fantastic cricketer. Impressed by the genuine humility of his comments, the nearest to arrogance he came was when commenting on an early encounter with Sir Gary Sobers

"At 15, he looked at me and said I'd be a Test cricketer and a good one. It's nice to have fulfilled his dream," he said.

I guess when you're the biggest test run scorer of all time you can grant yourself that one!

definately the best batsman i was fortunate to see..

Who - Slabber? Not watched a lot of cricket, then.

Though he often fecks it up by batting for the other side.

Indian pitches are easier to bat on.

But to be fair to the nappy wearing lot, Tendulkar's been top drawer away from home as well.

Viv Richards is the best batsmen ever.

Assuming we're excluding Bradman, this may actually be correct, though the stats don't reflect it.

Consistently amazing batsman, unlike Lara who had a lengthy patch in the middle of his career when he wasn't up for it.

Bradman didn't face hostile bowling. Viv did. That is except for Bodyline, in which I think he averaged 50. Another fact about Bradman is that he only ever played cricket in two countries. Australia and England. As for Viv he owned the crease. Never seen any other batsmen with that type of aura. His stats should've been a lot better. I do recall him losing near the end of his career. So yeah I think he's the best ever, including Bradman.

1) Bradman
2) Lara
3) Tendulkar
4) Slabber
5) Richards

As far as the averages are concerned only the number of innings is taken in to account.

True, after Bradman ofcourse.
And Jazzg is right, Lara has played more innings tha Sachin, which is a true indicator.
Even when calculating average, they use no of innings not matches.

And as far indian pitches a go, Tendulkar has equally good record playing away.
My list would be:
1)Don
2) Viv
3) Sachin
4) Lara

PS: Vijay, you are clueless if you think Gavaskar was better than Viv or lara

Lara has the habit of fecking up in big matches but unlike Tendulkar he can single handedly win matches.

The best batsman in the world possibly the one of the top 5 batsman of all time.

1) Bradman
2) Gary Sobers
3) Gavaskar
4) Richards
5) Lara
Errr.....I really feel sorry for you, being so thick and all.
