Brazil's moment of truth

Brazil v Venezuela
At Sao Paolo, 2340 GMT

Brazil have to win this game to ensure their place in the 2002 World Cup Finals.

Any other result could allow Uruguay to overtake them.

Traditionally one of the weakest teams in South America, Venezuela have won their last four games in a row.

Brazil had only lost one qualifying game in over 70 years, but have lost six during this campaign alone - the latest being a 3-1 reverse against Bolivia.

Should they lose again, they may find themselves in fifth place, and having to play Australia to decide who goes to Korea and Japan.

History in the making

In a checkered campaign with some great moments, upsets and joy, Brazil now faces the sternest of tests at 2140 on Wednesday in Castelao against an in-form Venezuela. Perhaps even the toughest test since Brazil won the World Cup for the fourth time in 1994 in the USA. The game itself is not for any title but is worth far more than any Cup or blue riband, as the future of the team depends on the result. If Brazil can win then they have a place guaranteed in the 2002 World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan, maintaining the tradition of being the only country to have been represented in all the World Cups to date. If they lose... well, if Brazil go down to Venezuela all will depend on the result of the game between Uruguay and the already-qualified Argentina in Montevideo.

Leaving aside the statistical chances of qualification, which include Columbia and the possibility of a play off against Australia, one thing is certain – in the words of author Nelson Rodrigues, not a single Brazilian, alive or dead, will admit to any result other than a victory. A victory that would represent the climax to a troubled South American group qualifying campaign – the hardest ever fought – and at the same the beginning of the passionate support for the fifth World title, so nearly won in 1998 in the Stade de France, when Brazil lost to France in one of the most memorable finals in history.

At a time when Brazil is united under one banner, all differences forgotten, national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who has still to decide on Wednesday’s starting line up, is certain of only one thing: whoever starts the game it will be an offensive formation, as Brazil needs to score goals to win.

But Wednesday’s game will not be anything like the match ups between the two countries in the past, as Venezuela has traditionally been considered one of the weakest teams on the continent. This time around Brazil will have to face an opponent that has won its last four qualifying matches and is keen to show the world that, for the first time in its history, it can beat Brazil at home to take this winning run to five - Uruguay, Chile, Peru and Paraguay already having fallen. As a result, the Venezuela Brazil faces on Wednesday is no longer the team used to defeat – and indeed they lost 6- 0 to Brazil in the first round in Maracaibo – even chasing after autographs after the match!

Brazil needs to win and the players are well aware of the improvement in Venezuela’s performance during the qualifying rounds. And nobody is letting this get them down – the talk is only of victory:

- The team is confident and primed to attack. I am certain that we will repeat during the match the excellent results achieved in training. We are going to qualify Brazil for the World Cup, particularly as no one here wants to be remembered as one of the team members that, for the first time ever, failed to make it to the finals – said Edilson, who has scored twice in the last two games.

The team is warmed up and confident and the supporters in Maranhao have promised to drive their team on to victory. When the team arrived in Maranhao on Monday hundreds of fans were at the airport to show their support. And well before the game 60,000 of the 75,000 tickets were sold. It will be a full house for a great sporting event.

The probable teams:

BRAZIL - Marcos, Lucio, Roque Junior, Edmilson; Belletti, Emerson, Juninho Paulista, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos; Edilson (Ronaldinho Gaucho) and Luizao (Marcelinho Paraiba).

VENEZUELA - Dudamel, Gonzalez (Pacheco), Rey, Rafael Vitale, Rojas; Miguel Vitale, Vera, Paez, Urdaneda; Noriega and Moran.

REFEREE: Daniel Gimenez (Argentina).

Venezuela, the team facing Brazil this Thursday, June 30th, has never been in the World Cup. It has never gone further than the elimination rounds. Of the ten times the team has played in the America Cup, it has totalled 36 matches with one victory (against Bolivia in 1967), 6 draws, and 29 losses. Venezuela’s game is still a fairly basic one. On the other hand, Brazil has quite a good record in the elimination rounds for the Cup: 8 wins in 8 games, 36 goals for the team and only 1 goal against. The last time that Brazil and Venezuela met was during the ’94 elimination rounds. That was on the 5th of September 1993, in Mineirão, and Brazil won 4 – 0.
The Venezuelan Football Federation was founded in 1926. It joined FIFA in 1952 and the first matches took place in the elimination rounds for the 1966 Cup. The most popular club in Venezuela is the Unión Táchira (formerly Deportivo San Cristóbal), Winner of the Apertura Tournament in 1999. Jairzinho, who was the ‘whirlwind’ of the 1970 Cup, was the most famous Brazilian to play in a Venezuelan club. He also played in the Portuguesa in 1977. Interestingly, the first Venezuelan goal against Brazil was scored by midfielder Maldonado during a match lost to Brazil 5 – 1 in the 1989 America Cup.

Venezuela’s Coach, Omar Pastoriza, believes that his team is now ready to demonstrate improvements given the performance of the team’s components. Venezuela is in the B group of America Cup with Brazil, Mexico and Chile. All of the games for this group will take place in Ciudad del Este. After the match against Brazil on June 30, Venezuela faces Chile (July 3rd) and Mexico (July 6th).

Venezuela has three players on teams outside the country: Daniel Noriega (Unión Santa Fé, Argentina), Félix Hernandez (Celaya, Mexico) and José Rey (Emelec, Equador).

Latest Results: 27 January 1999 Maracaíbo, VEN Venezuela 1 – 1 Denmark (friendly) 3 February 1999 Maracaíbo, VEN Venezuela 0 – 2 Argentina (friendly)

Next Matches: 3 July 1999 Cuidad del Este, PAR Venezuela v Chile (America Cup) 6 July 1999 Cuidad del Este, PAR Venezuela v Mexico (America Cup)

Would prefer Uruguay because the game would be played at sea level.

Australia has the first leg at home on the 20th of November at the MCG, the second leg i think is on the 25th November

Still in the first half, but good start from Brazil.

Trying to get to the SBS website, but it says the server is too busy :(

First half:

Brazil 2-0 Venezuela
Luizao (12)
Luizao (19)

Paraguay 0-1 Colombia

Uruguay 1-0 Argentina

or uruguay ?

come back ......... :D

4th position- Brazil would then have 30 points
5th position - Colombia, if they win have 27 points
6th position - Uruguay, if they lose, would be on 26 points

So, yes we would get Colombia

First Half:

Brazil 3 - 0 Venezuela

Luizao(12)
Luizao(19)
Rivaldo(34)

Paraguay 0 - 2 Colombia

Uruguay 1 - 0 Argentina

Dario Silva (17)

We don't have to worry about having to play Brazil :)

Half-time:

Brazil 3 - 0 Venezuela

First Half:

Uruguay 1 - 1 Argentina

Dario Silva (17) Claudio Lopez (44)

Paraguay 0 - 2 Colombia

Víctor Hugo Aristizábal (18)
Faustino Asprilla (pen 39)

Half-time scores:

Brazil 3 - 0 Venezuela
Uruguay 1 - 1 Argentina
Paraguay 0 - 2 Colombia

If Brazil win, a Uruguay draw or win will result them in obtaining 5th place in the CONMEBOL region and hence have to face Australia over two legs.

If Brazil win and Uruguay lose, only a win for Colombia would be needed for them to overtake Uruguay for the 5th position in the CONMEBOL region.

Surely you're joking. You expect Venezuela to give Brazil a run, especially away?

I'm flipping between the games. Venezuela is the worst side in South America. They're crap to watch, period. Hope Australia gets stuck with Columbia! ;)

Paraguay 0-4 Columbia

Did I hear correctly?
