BOWYER LISTED - EXCLUSIVE

UNITED midfielder Lee Bowyer has been put on the transfer list after turning down the offer of a five-year contract to stay at Elland Road until 2007 for reasons detailed to be 'a career move'.
The 25-year-old midfielder has been in talks with the club since December but has rejected the final offer from Leeds believed to be in the region of £2million a year.

Speculation that the £15million rated United star would leave this summer has been running for weeks and Leeds Chairman Peter Ridsdale has now announced the club will listen to offers for the midfielder, with Liverpool and Arsenal reported by the media as interested parties.

Ridsdale told www.lufc.com: "Leeds United today announce that Lee Bowyer has made the decision to turn down a new five-year contract. "

"Lee's accountant David Geiss has informed us that the terms of the contract are not the issue but that Lee has made the career decision to move on.

"With Lee having one year remaining on his current agreement, the club has no alternative but to place him on the transfer list with immediate effect.

"This initiative has been taken with great reluctance. Given the contract offered by the club, which would have elevated Lee to the elite of the highest paid players at Leeds United, and given the support the club has shown Lee during the past turbulent 30 months, we are disappointed to have this reached this juncture.

"We are surprised that this is the outcome after months of what appeared to be positive talks."

I reckon the racist trouble causing little twat is Anfield bound.

I am Lee's biggest fan but I feel let down - the club and particularly the fans have stood behind him through the last 2 years and we all expected him to stay....especially with all the "I love the club and the fans" crap he continued to spout.

He has a great passion for football and will be a good buy for someone, I really do feel it could be Liverpool, and hopefully we won't miss him too much.

Looks like Bowyer's got ambitions to play for a big club..

;)

I view Bowyer as another stupid kid, reflective of his "class" and upbringing, who could be controlled and have his off-the-field behavior tempered by the proper sort of "father-figure" (albeit overbearing) manager at a more responsible and concerned club. On the field, I figure he would prove to be an asset to any club in the Premiership. One can't obliterate Bowyer's past, but can probably get him to jettison the baggage.

Forgive me Bob but what exactly do you know about Bowyers class, upbringing or off-the-field behaviour?

He cost us £2.6 million so if we get anywhere near the rumoured £15 million it was a good bit of business.

Just seen this. The only reason I can see him wanting to leave, greed aside, is that he wants to play for a 'bigger' club.

Hope he goes abroad ;)

MOT:

I have attempted to sort through the many posts on Mr. Bowyer, both here and on Koptalk, to gain some insight into the vitriol and hatred so many of the non-Leeds fans harbor for him. It appears to me, from the several hundred posts (or more) that we have witness to, that Mr. Bowyer did not come from the most affluent of homes, nor did he turn down acceptance to medical school in order to pursue a career in football. In short, like many of the professional athletes in the United States, he did not come from a comfortable existence in which education was stressed and, frankly, has no alternate career choice that could afford him the sort of salary and creature comforts he now enjoys.

Other posts from the learned members of this forum (and that evil one mentioned supra), discuss "racism" among certain groups of white folk residing in Merry Olde England, although it is difficult to decipher whether by this several of the writers mean people who dwell in certain areas of certain communities, people of a certain income level, or just any follower of a division 2 or lower football club.

On top of that, I read some lengthy dissertations on this, among other sites, about the conduct of Mr. Bowyer at a McDonald's some time ago. Some attributed his statements and conduct reference an employee at that fast food establishment as proof of racism, while others felt alcohol was the primary contributing factor (although some might feel anyone working at a McDonald's is, in fact, deserving of such treatment). My generic and, I thought unobtrusive observations, were based on an amalgamation and synthesis of the numerous contributions that you, among others, have thoughtfully posted on the internet.

I note from history and the American experience that "racism" is most shown in its most overt forms among the people lowest on the economic scales, as they are the ones whose livelihoods are most threatened by the emergence of a new group willing to do the "scut-work" and comparatively low wages. This is, as best I can tell, reflective of the primary make-up of the most openly anti-immigrant/minority political party in the UK--its primary constituency is not Oxford professors, medical professionals, or stockbrokers.

Based on the foregoing, I reached the conclusion, which you apparently either reject, or object to because I am an American and therefore unfit to discuss things on your side of the pond, that it was most likely that Mr. Bowyer came from a geographical, economic, and educational background that could place him within the societal groups most likely to express some form of racial animosity, or have it taken as such by others, although it need not be truely reflective of the individual.

no matter what background you come from there is no excuse for racism.

Yeah

Don't worry about the gaping hole its gonna leave in your midfield......its good business to reduce your debts...

Career reasons = ambition

;)

It's nice that his ambition after causing Leeds so much trouble is to move on.

It's nice that after so much bad he has caused (despite being proved innocent) he can be rewarded by a new slate and a new club while Leeds will have to put up with the crap he left behind.

It's nice that this is the way he has repaid Leeds fans for all the crap that we had to put up with for being Leeds fans because of him and Woodgate that he now leaves Leeds once his trial is over.

It's nice that opposition fans all won't hate him now because he'll be at another club while Leeds fans will still get berated because of him, have no midfield, and go downhill.

I hate football. It always kicks you in the teeth. Thanks Lee Bowyer.

Calm down Elmo.....I am one of Lees biggest fans and I am sad to see him go but everybody is out for themselves in this life and Lee is no different.

He was hardly going to ask for a move during the trial was he and perhaps we should have seen through his "I love the club and the fans are the best in the world" crap....in fairness we have seen it all before with Jimmy Floyd Hazzabank.

He has been with us since May 96 and it appears there were clauses in his new contract (that would have taken him to retirement) he did not like...more than likely to do with his conduct off the pitch.

I am not looking forward to seeing his bursts from midfield anymore as they will be through our defence.

Good luck Lee and thanks for the good times.

Good question mate......anything between £12-15 million and I would be happy with £12 million.

Do you still not want him at Anfield?

Yes, I think you should get him. An over-rated, technically-indifferent, workhorse-type midfielder, he is perfect for your playing style.

The Sun now believes Bowyer is set to Liverpool... With Leeds using the money to sign Roy Keane!

LEE BOWYER is on the brink of joining Liverpool in a £15million switch from Leeds.
The former England Under-21 midfielder was slapped on the transfer list earlier this week after snubbing the offer of a new five-year contract worth £40,000 a week.

But now Bowyer, 25, will seal his switch to Anfield by agreeing with them the same deal he snubbed at Elland Road.

And Leeds manager David O'Leary could use the money to make an amazing swoop for Manchester United skipper Roy Keane.

Anfield boss Gerard Houllier has been tracking Bowyer since the turn of the year.

And Houllier sees the combative former Charlton ace as a vital addition to his squad.

Liverpool need to boost their midfield after losing new Coventry player-boss Gary McAllister and Jamie Redknapp to Tottenham. Liverpool's interest in Bowyer was exclusively revealed in SunSport last month.

By that time it had become clear that Bowyer's relationship with Leeds had become irreparably damaged following the player's high-profile court case.

Even though Bowyer was cleared of charges of GBH and affray following an attack on Asian student Sarfraz Najeib outside a Leeds city centre nightclub in January 2000, he was fined eight weeks' wages by the club for being drunk on the night of the incident.

Even though he continued to insist that he wanted to remain at Elland Road, he stubbornly stalled on signing the new terms put to him. He finally informed the club that he wanted to leave earlier this week and chairman Peter Ridsdale tagged Bowyer as "a waste of our time".

And from LUFC......

NO MOVES FOR BOWYER - YET

United Chairman Peter Ridsdale has revealed that no bids have yet been received for want away midfielder Lee Bowyer.
Ridsdale, part of an FA delegation over in the Far East with the England team, was reacting to reports that the 25-year-old is ready to agree a move to Liverpool by signing personal terms with the Merseysiders. That can't happen until Leeds give a club permission to speak to Bowyer.

Ridsdale said: "At this point we have received no bids for Lee Bowyer."

Newspaper speculation this morning suggested Bowyer will make a move to Anfield by accepting the same deal he snubbed at Elland Road.

.....it looks like Anfield it is then

;)

Bowyer should come to Rangers. Don't laugh. ;)

He'd beef up our midfield and, in the eyes of Murt and his fellow tims, make the club even more loathable.

He is a Rangers fan.

So he wouldn't have asked for a move during the trial but it's a pity we didn't just kick him out at the start of the trial and save ourselves a whole lot of problems.

I'm not bitter about a shit like Lee Bowyer per se. I'm bitter that after all the trouble Leeds went to for him he's causing even more trouble by leaving a gaping hole in our midfield when we can't afford that (financially and technically).

I don't wish Lee all the best. Why should I? He doesn't wish the best for the Leeds fans (who he said were the best supporters and he wouldn't get that support anywhere else...which is true).

Ultimately I'll be happier once he's gone as I've never agreed with all the business that went on and even though he was found innocent he was still involved in the incidents at Mill Hill. I'll just be happier if we replace him with someone decent which I can't see happening. Hence the bitterness at his leaving then.

The plot thickens

BOWYER TWIST?

AFTER the twists and turns of the Republic of Ireland's Roy Keane, Mick McCarthy saga last week, could transfer listed United star Lee Bowyer be about to have a change of heart and decide to stay at Elland Road?
United Chairman Peter Ridsdale has pushed the door ajar for the Leeds midfielder who is being linked with a £15million move to Liverpool and is reported to be a possible target for Arsenal.

Despite speculation to the contrary United have confirmed they have received no bids for the 25-year-old former Charlton player who arrived at Elland Road in 1996.

Ridsdale revealed today that he is due to hold further talks with Bowyer's advisor David Geiss later this week, and while the general feeling is that Bowyer wants to quit Elland Road, there is now talk suggesting the possibility of him staying on.

The midfielder, who was made available for transfer last week after turning down a new five-year deal, still has one year left on his current contract and will be available on a Bosman free transfer next summer unless sold.

Peter Ridsdale said today: "I get on well with Lee's agent and will be speaking to him again this week,.

"A fortnight ago we shook hands on a deal and I think his agent was as surprised as I was by the events of last week.

"I'm not making any predictions, but you can never say never in this game.

"At the moment we've had no enquires about Lee," Ridsdale added to the YEP. "We're not actively seeking enquiries because we don't want Lee to go."
