Boro target reveals United interest
ICELANDIC sensation Sigurdur Donys Sigurdsson has revealed to planetfootball.com that Manchester United have been in contact with him.
The 16-year has just returned to Iceland after completing a four day trial with Middlesbrough last week.
During his time on Teesside he played one friendly for their academy outfit and made an immediate impression with two goals.
Boro moved immediately to sign him, but were swiftly rejected as the player stated he wanted to consider his options.
However, Donys will be returning to Middlesbrough next month after accepting an extended six-week trial with the club.
Boro are seemingly anxious to land the player who is already being dubbed the 'new Eidur Gudjohnsen'.
Middlesbrough have already informed the youngster that he may be allowed to return to Iceland on loan should he sign for them, before beginning his possible career with Boro next season.
As reported, Newcastle have also made contact with the young striker, who is currently with lower league outfit Einherji, and both Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Alex Ferguson could yet swoop and steal the youngster from under the nose of Boro boss Steve McClaren (pictured).
"There has been contact from a few large European clubs including Manchester United and Newcastle," Sonys told planetfootball.com.
"Newcastle are going to wait and see how I like my stay in Middlesbrough.
"Manchester United told me that they would be watching my progress during the next few weeks."
Sonys scored 18 goals for Einherij last season and an abundance of strikes for their youth side brought him to the attention of some of Europe's best clubs.
The striking starlet is available for nothing as Einherji chairman Bjorn H Sigurbjornsson confirmed that players under 18 in Iceland could not sign professional deals.
Despite this Einherji would be due some minimal compensation and although this would be insignificant to the English clubs, it would be a major boost to the small Icelandic outfit.
