Double Dutch at Manchester United
Call it Manchester United’s double-Dutch treat … you’ve heard of Hertz Van Rental; now I give you Louis Van Gaal and Robin Van Persie, potentially one of the most successful manager-player partnerships in the Premier League next season.

Van Gaal will breeze into Old Trafford with the intention of cashing in on the popular conception among the majority of his managerial colleagues … `I wouldn’t fancy following Fergie as manager of Manchester United – but I wouldn’t mind following the bloke who follows him!’

The immediate benefit will be to organise a dressing room, populated by high-priced newcomers whose deals were set up by David Moyes. But it will be the much travelled coach’s close relationship with Van Persie which will be a crucial factor in United’s bid to regain respectability.

The ace up the new boss’s sleeve will be the one already used by Sir Alex Ferguson to trump Premier League rivals when United plundered their 20th league title at the end of 2012-13 season.

Ed Woodward, the club’s executive vice-chairman, who has already wielded his power as the man behind Moyes’ sacking, has been busy with the £200million shopping list drawn up by the short-lived Scot. Negotiations for the likes of Toni Kroos, Luke Shaw and Marco Reus have gone well beyond the `I quite fancy them stage’.

Moyes made strengthening the central defensive position as a major priority. Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Johnny Evans are not regarded as adequate replacements for the departed Nemenja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. Top targets Paris St Germain’s heavily contracted Thiago Silva and exciting young Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna are.

That still leaves a sizeable chunk of the budget left for a top-class striker and they will need if such as Diego Costa, Radamel Falcao, Edison Cavani, Mario Mandzukic or Jackson Martinez are heading for North-West England. And yet none of them will be needed if Van Persie is fit enough to recapture the scoring form which won United the title.

The striker’s ruinous sequence of injuries meant Moyes was hardly ever able to exploit the legacy left by his mentor. Now, ironically, Van Gaal could reap the benefit of his predecessor’s considerate handling of Van Persie’s recovery programme following his knee injury picked up after scoring a hat-trick against Olimpiacos in March before he gets anywhere near Old Trafford.

His goal in his second comeback appearance against Hull City advertised he is fit and fresh for Van Gaal’s World Cup campaign. With Van Persie at his best in the team, who needs another striker?

The major bonus, established in sounding out the availability of any of the so-called big hitters, is not one of them have been influenced by United’s non-participation in the Champions League next season.

A source close to Old Trafford confided: `They are still attracted by wearing the red shirt of what is probably the best known football club in the world.’

I made a new thread because there is info on quite a few targets. Is he still pals with Fergie, and would he really have well sourced info?

He seems to have went a bit muppet crazy in that.

"You and your paper can feck off"

Edit: No rule bending.

Top targets: central defenders and strikers. Ok... :wenger:

Reus, Shaw and Kroos would be an incredible summer. But he's just parroting those names from other articles. The rest - the ones he's pulled out of thin air - make no sense at all.

Kroos, Shaw, Reus

If someone asked me for 3 dream signings, those 3 would be my picks, or pretty close at least.

Know what you're saying, but if we were talking true dreams, would those 3 even get close to the top 10? ;)

Would not fancy us improving our midfield if Carrick or Felleni are our holding midfielder next season. The lack of William Carvalho in that article in troublesome considering he could improve our midfield moreso than Kroos.

Moreover, Thiago Silva and Ogbonna looks like names just drawn from a hat.

Agree. With Fergie not being the main man then it's really anyone's guess how much Cass really knows what's happening at United. The fact that Giggs told everyone at Old Trafford about United promoting youth and the future only a few days ago and now suddenly there's a massive change in plan doesn't really add up.

Also I find the part of Moyes not rating Jones,Smalling and Evans strange. Moyes has gone and any of his opinions of the players have gone as well, United are about to appoint a manager who loves working with young players and one of the criticisms of him is that he think he can turn any youth prospect into a superstar.

I can guess it;s only another PR stunt from United to the fans after the poor season.

Realistic dreams then

Seriously, if we get those 3 we are looking at a title challenge at least.

I stopped reading when he said Thiago Silva is a top target, he's not going anywhere.

Reus looks good but then so did Kagawa, Kroos a bit slow and beside Carrick that would worry me (would rather have Fabregas) Shaw looks great but overpriced.

Reus would rip the PL up straight away I reckon, he's world class in my book. He's made for the PL already whereas Kagawa has needed a long time to adapt to it, and next season is really make or break for him. Saying that, would not be surprised at all to see him move as part of this deal.

Was about to say exactly this. And his 'source' is hardly going to say we didn't have faith in our current defenders either. I reckon he got a word from someone about Kroos/Shaw and decided to bulk it out with some dross about centre backs and strikers.

Cass was always one of the better informed journos when Fergie was in charge, but bear in mind he once ssid he was 110% sure Lucas Moura would be a United player.

Aren't Barca very keen on Thiago? I don't see it happening.

That has to be one of the worst 'articles' I've ever seen.

Undoubately Cass remains close to Fergie and would have known Moyes' targets. Given the way Moyes managed the squad and what Moyes clearly thought of the players Fergie left him it would not surprise me to learn these were his targets. The big question is will they be Van Gaal's?

I think Van Gaal has, minus his time at AZ, always worked with a Sporting Director so he will be accustomed to having players given to him and being told to coach them. So if Woodward is still working on these deals despite the dotted line not being signed by Van Gaal then I could understand that. However, United would do well to make sure Van Gaal actually wants these players. Look how Van Gaal managed the likes of Tymoshuck who were pushed on him by Bayern. Whatever Woodward thinks if Van Gaal doesn't want to use his big buys he won't.

A real lack of central midfielders in that article. I hope there is something to the consistency in which our interest in Reus and Shaw is reported though.

I think people are overstating what will happen in the summer, realistically we won't see 8 in and 8 out. It will more than likely be:

In:
Centre Back
Left Back
Winger
Centre Midfielder

Out:
Vidic (Inter)
Ferdinand (Retired/released)
Evra (Released)
Nani (somewhere in Italy)
Giggs (Retired)

Just throwing out a bunch of names for some reason.

Like Juventus' 4th best CB who at 25 is "young" apparently

Is he even fourth choice? Don't they also have Caceres, or is he better?

The good thing is Reus wouldn't have any obstacle in his way of playing his best position. Where as Kagawa has Rooney and now Mata (as much as I like and rate Kagawa) I think we now need to cut or losses on him if that will be a bargaining chip in the Reus deal.

And he was up until the 11th hour PSG came in with boat loads of wonga
