BlueRay kicks arse in Australia

Interesting, don't think they are doing so well in the US

I'm sure in a couple of years BlueRay will merge with HD DVD and they will come together and make a new product to sell that isnt compatible on either of the old products, and make shit load of money screwing people over once again

Apparently, the American porn industry is going to go with HD-DVD. If it wasn't for the internet I would say Blu-ray's days were numbered.

I suspect that by this time next year HD DVD will be the walking dead in most markets.

Eventually you are probably right. In the mean time I'd hate to pick the wrong horse.

They'll both be dead soon, everything will be streamed online

Hard to stream hi def movie content over t'internet without bringing the entire thing crashing down, I'd imagine. What's an HD movie, something like 20Gb? That's a lot of bandwidth.

wish the mofos would sort it out. I'd like to get a HD dvd player to take advantage of the my 1080P telly but I'll be fcuked if I buy one until it's decided which one is the way forward.

Because it's the technically superior product, simple as that. The sooner one of them is dead the better.
That's where Blu-Ray will prosper whereas Sony's Betamax didn't. For the first time really, the superior picture is what people are going for when they pick a format. In my opinion, BluRay looks better, so they'll win the war.

I think we're a ways off from having that being a viable option. Image quality is bad enough trying to stream a 32mb file, let along a 2gb HD movie file. I personally would prefer to have a hard copy of a movie, not just a file on my computer.

A lot of people also like to have a hard copy.

It will be a long time before streaming HD video becomes the norm. The majority of people still can't stream broadcast quality SD video on demand.

my cable company offers some HD video on demand and also some HD PPV.

dunno about the frozen north but down my way it's my understanding that the cable and satellite TV companies are broadcasting HD at 780P which is not as good as 1080P. I think that the blu rays are showing at 1080P.*

*I could be wrong.

Some shows are broadcast in 1080i. DVD will look better than cable because it's uncompressed. Cable needs to compress slightly due to bandwidth issues.

Xbox is offering this in the UK as of next tuesday, (HD and Normal) will be interesting to see how well this works, sony already do this in Japan for the PS3, or at least it was announced it was on its way

Will definitely give it a go

I thought there was no quality difference at all, blu ay just has a higher capacity which in the long run will probably be the major deciding factor

MS dropped the ball in not using next gen media from the off

HD will win out.

One of the big studios (can't remmeber which) a month or so ago dumped Blu Ray for HD DVD.

My mate works for Toshiba (who sell HD DVD) and he has seen both technologies side by side exrensively, and apparently the HD DVD is far superior.

I believe that was Paramount.

Samsung are apparently working on a hybrid player anyway which will play both formats.

If you want a discussion about which codec is used on whatever title, then we can have one, but on the technical level your mate doesn't know what he is talking about. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are basically the same when it comes to image quality apart from the fact that one can store more data than the other. Many of the first BD titles however were coded using MPEG-2, but that is not a reflection on the technology, rather a publisher's choice.

Also, no studio has dumped BD, Toshiba paid a few studios to give them timed exclusivity. DreamWorks movies are one.

I had the spiderman trilogy on blue ray turn up this morning. I've had a quick scan through each film and all i can say is WOW! The picture and sound quality is amazing.

The blueray format is truly incredible.

Best wait a while. If the recession bites deeper then expect to see competition hot up and prices fall. With the speed of updated tech. these days the manufacturers will want to get as much of the market as possible before a new product hits. I expect to see HD Televisions fall by at least 30-50% next year
