Supposdly he has hinted that he wants to continue to play.

Fergie would be jumping at joy if he actually did.

To me, that's bad news - how on earth can fergie even consider fielding a soon-to-be 37 year old in the first team?

Sir Alex's reaction to all this Blanc retirement nonsense is worrying to say the least, we need major blood infusion in this area, not persisting with the same mediocre stuff.

That's why I believe Fergie will only buy ONE defender to replace Blanc in the summer, if Blanc decides to stay, we'll probably be going after another midfielder! :(

You are starting to get annoying.

Blanc has a very good technique with the ball, is very positional as far as defenders go, and does bring a lot of personality on the field. He can marshall the defence next year and allow Wes and J O'shea to learn a thing or two.

Would you prefer a 36 year old soon-to-retire guy, good technique that he may have to lead the defence or someone like Nesta for instance? There's only so much a retiring guy can do.

I know which I will pick.

It's too late to ring any changes now but this summer is very crucial for the future of Utd's success. Radical changes MUST be made to the defence and possibly the keeper - personal biasness or past good performance must NOT come into the picture.

It's not about the age. It's how well he plays. And he plays well.

Though, I wouldn't mind if we'd get new defenders this summer.

There's no question we would be doing major defensive reshuffle in the summer (Fergie has hinted so as well) because what we've been doing this season has not been good enough, with or without Blanc.

Having said that, this is certainly one player I'd love to see staying at United. He's class, and if people looked simply at his performances without the age tag, they'd realise that.

Nesta? We're not going to sign him. There's no chance of that, Blanc or no Blanc.

What, another anti Barthez?

Don't expect a 'turn-around' overnight... this is Larry White we're talking about so it may take some time... ;)

i've seen milk turn quicker than larry white.

;-)

The scurge of the scouse because gary mcallister has real frighting pace doesn't he?????? (and you want to talk about milk turning more like hell freezing over in his case)

Blanc staying, why not? that shouldn't stop fergie still going after a younger world class centre back - of the nesta, cannavaro, ayala calibre.

Age is certainly a factor here - we are building for now and for the future, we should NOT be resorting to stop-gap one season measures.

I don't remember Sir Alex hinting about buying any defenders in the summer, he usually plays his cards very close to his chest but he certainly MUST perform major surgery this summer on the entire back four. We are just not good enough there whichever way we look at it.

Let Blanc retire gracefully and bring in the new guys with players like O'Shea as understudies.

I have noticed something. SAF don't care about the future. He'll want to win everything he can in the next four years, therefore, I don't think he will resort to playing players like O'Shea and waiting for them to develop.
Part of me wishes he retired at the end of this or next season so that the new manager can have time to get new players and so on. When Fergie retires in 3 years, most players will be 29 (midfield, Ruud) Giggs will be around 32, Blanc 40 I don't know how old Neviller are and so on. Then new manager will come and he'll face a problem of replacinig more than half the team, and we'll have to buy those players instead getting them from the academy, and other young players from other clubs.
Fergie buying Blanc has proved my point. He could have bought someone like Mexes to strenghten our defence in the future, but he decided to gt a 37 year old, just because Blanc is better than Mexes. He was thinking only of this season and not about what problems other manager will encounter.
this is going to happen again in the next couple of years, and I think the main reson he didn't retire is because he could not leave the team that is at the peak of its potential. He's gonna use that potential and leave us with nothing. :(

PS I hope all this is wrong, but we will not know until this summer

SAF is in love with this football club, he's cleared them out before and re-built (and then won with that), and he'll do it again! Don't be surprised to see a Butt or a Scholes or even a Beckham out of the door this summer! :o

The only one that will never go is Giggs - thats a player far too special! :p

I would prefer the entire defence to be cleared out

Barring Gary Neville and O'Shea

As for Barthez, he can stay and fight it out with a new buy for the keeper's spot

You contradict yourself here! If Fergie really don't care with future, he should have bought PDC instead of Deigo Forlan! In case of defence we should buy someone who can IMMEDIATELY improve our defence rather than another "future prospect", as we already have too many of them! (Brown, O'shea, etc.) I don't know how good is Mexes as I have never watched him play, may be he is 10 times better than O'Shea now. But at least I have seen too many past incidents that a guy who is excellent at 18 may be totally crap at 28!

I also think that only Gary Neville, Silverstre, O'Shea and Brown are good enough to remain after this season. However it is just too unrealistic.... Optimistically I think Fergie will definitely buy one to replace Irwin. Let's hope Blanc will retire gracefully and then we will buy a new CB.

I hope you are righ there, Devil

As for uranushk1, you have found a hole in the plot there!

Larry would be a good mentor if we were to buy a young defender like Mexes. I hope he stays.

As a regular first team player?

Or in some other capacity?

Beckham will stay because he is far too important to let go. Butt will stay because I believe he still has a long term contract and doesn't want to leave. I don't think Scholes will leave either, but if i had to pick one of three that I think could go it would be Scholes. Rating our midfielders I would rate as follows:
1. Keane
2. Beckham
3. Scholes
4. Giggs
5. Veron

Read somewhere that Mexes looks up to Blanc, studies tape of him. Considering Fergie's longstanding admiration for Blanc, and his similarity to Mexes(technical, composed style) it seems reasonable that the interest in Mexes is more than just rumour.

I would like to see Blanc being offered the role of a defensive coach - his reading of the game is exceptional and will be an excellent adviser on all things defence

Regardless of whether Mexes wants to join us or not

Yes, it would be good to keep him around now that he has become aquainted with the OT organisation. He has such class and stature, it would be great to have him on the staff, just like the idea to have Cantona, or even Papain, involved in coaching. Blanc is economical with his energy(not just slow/lazy): he could play some more next season, though would probably be making way for the future CBs.

Typo. See the next posting immediately after.

Blanc is a slow player but he has a lot of experienced. Trust me he'll have a very good influence on the team, and SAF knows that too...

Aahh, the way he handled the world class striker Roberts on saturday left me in no doubt this is going to be some season

u do discredit to Jason Roberts. Hes quick and strong and was one of the top scorers in Div1 last season. He'll cause problems for more than Blanc this year

Roberts was injured for something like half the season - I don't see how he can be one of the top scorers

Let's not descredit a player just because he's unknown. Marcus Stewart didn't do too badly in his first season in the Premiership, has he?

I dont care about Roberts. I care about how easily he left Larry in his wake, and this is a 1st division striker I'm sure Larry will have a few good games this season but I really really hope that Rio and JOS become the partnership this season with Blanc as a back up/defensive coach. He didn't look good in Hungary (turned his back and walked back and by the time he got to the area they'd scored). I dont have confidence in him. We are the richest club in the world, the most famous and one of the biggest and we have a has been ruling our defence. Its incredible really when you think about it. Look at our competition, only Hierro from Real is close to that age but he still has a bit of pace and it realy does make all the difference.

Come on, slate me for my views!

Why slate you when you know you deserve a slating already? I'm not going to jump on the 'lets slam into Blanc all over again' wagon.

And calling Roberts a first division player is not fair. He is a premiership player now, you know.

Might make a turnaround? He has a turn time longer than an articulated lorry
