French Football Federation on the lookout for a defensive technical director.

And it's believed Federation chief Jaques Santini has earmarked former World Cup and European Championship winner Blanc for the role.

The Frenchman (36) faces a struggle to win his first team place back at Old Trafford as Sir Alex Ferguson has been impressed with the way Mikael Silvestre and Wes Brown have linked up at the heart of United's defence in he past month.

And with Rio Ferdinand near to a return from a thigh injury, Blanc could find himself as low as fifth choice for the centre back role, John O'Shea also in contention for a starting place.

Blanc may start in tonight's Worthington Cup quarter-final against Chelsea at old Trafford, but he's likely to be back on the bench when United return to Premiership action at the weekend.

And a move back to France may give Sir Alex Ferguson an easy way out of a difficult decision.

Ferguson has been an ardent defender of Blanc during his time at Old Trafford and, after extending his contract during the summer, Blanc had hinted he could go on playing for another year.

But the emergence of Brown and Silvestre makes it difficult to see Blanc winning his place back in the team.

I hope this is true, Blanc has done OK at OT but not the best and given the form of the backline at the moment he wont get back in, i would rather he take the opportunity rather than be bitter at the club for not playing him!

Good luck to him if he decides to take it.
He has been brilliant for us.
Alot of people questioned his signing but he has been a great player for us.
Wouldnt mind him being "defensive coach" at United.

I posted at the start of the season that Blanc would be first choice until Christmas, then OShea would take over full time. Obviously I didnt know who'd get injured etc, but it does seem to be panning out this way.

Blanc is pure class. It must fantastic for our young defenders to have him around and to learn from him.

Personnally for this reason I hope he stays around for the rest of the season (he is a bit light of domestic medals), it can only benefit us in the long run.

I think it would be a mistake to let him go now. Wait till the end of the season. Surely with the injuries we've had, the smart thing to do is keep him just in case.

Most importantly I think he would be the perfect player for us to have come in the the last 10-20 mins to close out a game or defend a lead. His ability to read the game, his cool under pressure attitude and his experience is something that can't be tought. You never know, he might be the difference between winning the CL or crashing out! <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" />

good points. i believe it would be silly to let him go half way through a season.
for the record i think he's been class for us & doesnt deserve the constant crap the media & some fans threw at him all the time about his pace.

Has anyone else noticed certain things about Wes Brown's play that smacks of Larry? I think has done fantastic for us even with his dodgey pace.....I hope he stays to coach some of the youngsters.....

If I was Blanc I wouldn't want to leave right now. He must see the real potential for some serious silverware this season and knows this would be a marvelous way to cap off his career. I also think he is mature enough to deal with a limited role recognizing the blossoming of Mickey/O'Shea/Brown and Rio. Witness the obvious look of pleasure on his face when the cameras spotted him and Keane sitting in the crowd during the Depor game.

If the French FA really want him I am sure they would be able to wait until after the season's end. After all there are few internationals to worry about between now and then.

I agree with this. He would be very good coaching some of the younger talent. It would be ashame to lose him, even if he isn't playing.

blanc is the one who has taught silvestre, o'shea and brown a lot of things... their all class just like he was when younger and faster...
he would make a great defensive coach
