Just announced on Five Live.Thought it would have been a loan.

Birmingham have had a £6m bid for Robbie Keane accepted by Tottenham, according to the Press Association.

City will pay Spurs an initial £4m for the Republic of Ireland striker with an extra £2m coming via various add-ons and clauses in the deal.

Good deal for Brum

Agreed, excellent deal for them!!! As much as I would never ever want Keane anyway near United, and never would have, I think he is a very decent striker and has a habit of scoring goals whenever he gets a run in any team.

Birmingham could be assembling a decent squad here with Bentley as well

Haven't been impressed with Robbie for a long time now, he's been quite poor for the national team so hopefully this will be a fresh start for him under a good coach in McLeish

Keane never was much cop and is clearly past it. Another duff striker to partner Zigic on the bench.

I agree he's a bit past it.

But to say "he was never much cop" is wrong. For example, he formed an excellent partnership with Berbatov and scored more league goals in one particular calendar year than any other Prem striker bar none.

"Small money though" compared to what he was worth ahead of when he joined Liverpool  Six months with Rafa Benitez really ruined him. It seems like he had the same devastating effect on Diego Milito whom where arguably the best forward in the world under Mourinho, and has been absolutely crap since. If he gets back to anywhere close to where he was at his prime, this is a bargain, because back in his partnership with Berbatov he was really good...

£4m-£6m does not give them a lot of money to get someone to "replace" him though. Because I really think they need another one. Defoe has stuggled with injuries, they have lost a decent attacking midfielder in Bentley too... Of course with him and Krancjar they really had one more than they needed. By losing Keane and Bentley their squad is weaker. They probably should sign some attacking player this January.

Defoe, Crouch, Pavlyochenko(sp?) more than enough....Especially with Van Der Vaart playing just behind, and scoring plenty of goals.

Bentley was a non-factor, he hardly got played in anything. You're right they're down in terms of squad numbers, but that's it.

Clever bit of business there i thought, he's a good player and will keep Brum up. Now are Spurs going for Suarez for a replacement?

You dont need to rotate to much the first half of season, the second half players are going to get injured, and tired. Having a squad and being able to rest players is key... Last season Lennon got injured, and it almost did not hurt them at all. As a matter a fact, they probably managed fourth with the worst injury season in all of the league last season.

Now, it might be a bit thin. Defoe has not been good this season, he has had a lot of injuries. If they get him injured, they have Crouch and Pav... that is not much... They should get someone regardless, and if they would get someone like Benzema, Adebayor or Suarez they could improve quite a bit. Neither of them are likely to happen though.

Miller and Keane ... is McLeish trying to take the New Firm title away from the Boro?

Should be on his way back by the summer then? Seriously, it is quite a bit of business for both brums and spurs. I just can't understand why they have those 4 (keane, the russian, defoe and crouch) when neither of them could perfom enough to hold a starting spot. As a matter of fact it didn't matter one bit who he started because they were all performing just as bad and non of them had any chemistry between them... absolutely sickening to see really.

If you look at what you get for that kind of money you should be smiling for a pretty long time. It's always hard to find good players in that price range if you look within England. Keane is able to produce a lot of goals + assists when played with the correct partner, and on top of that he's a leader and could inspire them to go on longer streak of picking up points.

He's a bit past it. 6 million is a lot of money IMO.

Mccleish has decided the best way forward is by bolstering is side with a bunch of has beens.

Not a bad signing for Brum. They do well with players who don't make the grade elsewhere and he and Bentley could be good captures.

To be fair Deco, most of his goals for Ireland have come against very weak opposition. Granted he has scored a few very important ones, but a good international record on paper does not tell the whole story.

Internationals are neither here nor there these days, Crouch has a better record than Greaves or Muller.

Stupid money for a soon 31 year old who is not very good.

They can't score to save their lives, Keane won't score loads but may well be enough to keep them up. Well worth it, even if not great long term.

Agree. 6m is a lot for Robbie Keane. Especially when you count his wages on top of it.

I think McLeish is fecking up. He developed a superb hard working side but has tried to add 'quality' in the shape of Hleb, Zigic, Keane and Bentley. He's undermining the work ethic and not getting the quality to compensate.

Fair point

To be fair Pete, Keane is just about as hard-working as a striker gets. In fact, it's probably his main asset now that he's lost a yard or six of pace and doesn't score as much as he used to. So really, his workrate:quality ratio is probably about right for an ideal McLeish team.

Not like Cameron Jerome, that guy runs his bollocks off every game. Plus you've got a couple of fancy dans in Bentley and Hleb instead of grafters like Larsson. I have sympathy since he couldn't stand still, but they look like the wrong moves.

Yeah I would have saved up my pennies and bought the best striker I could find, probably taking a punt from Ligue 1 (Gervinho - too expensive?)

I think it might turn out to be a good deal for Brum. But how many strikers do they have now? Don't they have 5 including Keane?

They need to use Zigic better. They need to use him like how Spurs use Crouch. They have to play him a lot and put in a lot of crosses and long balls.

McLeish is no fool. He knows Keane with his PL experience is capable of making an immediate impact. That's what they need. There's no point in them having some fancy dan striker who takes a year to settle - they could be relegated by then.

Personally I think his best days are well behind him but he'll do enough to keep them up, which will be worth the five million in and of itself.

Well Zigic was a shocker, Hleb doesn't look like a good idea, I wouldn't touch Bentley with a barge pole and Keane is past it. Not looking too good from here.

Zigic was always iffy, I'd agree with that. Hleb was relatively low risk - albeit his attitude seems shocking - and the sort of player he was going to have to introduce if he wanted to move away from slogging it out, which only ever works for so long, especially considering the age of his squad. Bentley is a good player who will improve them, or at the very least who will replace Larsson pretty seamlessly. Keane is better than what they have and he has the bit of experience and composure that Jerome lacks.

At the level Brum are at it's tough to make big jumps in the standard of the squad. They're in serious danger of going down with their inability to score goals. Keane and Bentley will be better than their counterparts at Brum's relegation rivals. That seems pretty decent, if uninspired business to me.

Bentley for Larsson underlines the risk. 100% limited battler for 60% on a good day fanny.

Bentley got 3 goals and 3 assists in 42 games for Tottenham, which for a winger is quite frankly awful.

Yes, he has been crap in Tottenham, but to be fair, those 42 matches are not remotely close to 42 whole matches, I bet it is closer to half of that, and he did brilliant at Blackburn... He is clearly a player with skill, and he might turn out a brilliant signing for Birmingham. I bet McLeish can get more out of both him and Keane than Tottenham did the past year. I also think Miller is the kind of forward you should pair Keane up with. A strong man up front, that will make it hard for the defence, if they focus on one of them, the other one might strike.

I really think Birmingham has done a decent transfer window. They are less likely to go down now than they were before the window.. I am sure these three players will provide them with some goals.
