The media now is all over him, and how he wonderfully stepped up and knocked his competitiors around their heads because they didn't know what they were doing (in a way, yes, they didn't know what they were doing, but not because of Bill), and try to make out that he's some kind of saint with what he his going to do with his time and his money.

An example: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7476720.stm

This is the man that has almost single handedly created a corporate monster that has totally destroyed computing to make this cash and thus the world better (and yes, knobend IT managers for buying it), because without the cnut it would be far better now. The trouble is, he's leaving this bloody company in the hands of a real twat which means even more of the same crap.

Interestingly, the mainstream media never mention Chuck Peddle.

Ah, Weaste. You never fail to cause me amusement. You're like the Che Guevara of the computer geek world.

Full of anger, revolution and popular ideas, but, in the end, horribly unsuccessful ;)

dont buy his products then...he is giving it to help the developing nations, top bloke IMO
I don't understand your issues with him....if you don't like it mate, look elsewhere....simple as

I watched that cringeworthy leaving video he stars in earlier

As I say, cringeworthy

Celebs and politicians sucking up to his like leaches

AYe, because the world is insane and it views acts backed up with soundbites such as:

according to Mr Gates, great wealth brings great responsibility and his future work will include finding new vaccines and financing projects in the developing world.

It's all a publicity stunt to make him even richer. Ok Bill, if you want to do something, keep a billion for yourself and put the other god knows how many countries you could buy with it cash into a trust.

not his fault others are shite.

For the record, I like Windows. Sure it's buggy and has a million loopholes for hackerz to exploit, but XP SP2 has been alright. And i love point-and-click, it's a very underrated feature unless you love slaving hours and hours on the computer typing in sophisticated code just to open your internet browser.

He seems a nice enough guy from what I've seen of him. I don't like the way Microsoft operates but he is ploughing his fortune into his charity, so I respect him for that.

I changed my opinion off him after watching the interview Fiona Bruce did with him. Very intelligent guy who would still question his software engineers designs during meetings with them.

Say what you like about him, him and his wife are giving 30 BILLION to charity. The single biggest donation from an individual ever. Even if you dont like Microsoft you have to respect that!

Yeah, windows brought me to computers. Before that it was colons and slashes and things, far too complicated for me. It's just a pity Gates isn't English and brought more wealth over here. Or whatever other nationality you happen to be, of course.

I too saw the Fiona Bruce interview and IMO you've got to admire his business skills - he saw an opportunity and grabbed it with both hands. Good for him.

No doubt he must be ruthless in business but that's what you are supposed to be if you want to get to where he has....same as Branson.

Gates seems to have feet firmly planted on the ground unlike a lot of these flash billionaires.

Weaste, please do explain how the IT world, and the world in general would be a better place without Bill Gates and Microsoft?

He's a business man, surely you have to be ruthless.

Even richer? So he is doing more for charity and giving more to charity than you or I ever have and its all just a publicity stunt to make himself even richer? Despite the fact he has more money than he can spend in 100 lifetimes?

the word "jealousy" springs to mind.

Sure his company tries to make as much money as possible by using ruthless tactics, but most of it is going to charity so whats the problem?

Bill gates what an utter cnut ey?

I once saw one of his seminars on TV where he was giving advice to a University, can't remember which one in the US. He seems like a very down to earth guy, typical computer nerd but not arrogant or weird, quite serious as well and a decent sense of humor. It's too bad his company is a monopoly and his engineers incompetant, Vista is shite as well but hard to blame one guy.

The exact opposite of Weaste. If he was in Bill Gates' position we wouldn't be allowed to have coloured screens and GUI. Actually he would go a bit further and establish a dictatorship around the whole world. Weaste, you are ridiculous. You do know that compared to that guy you are nothing, right?

What the feck else is he going to do with it? Like I said, he and his wife could just keep one billion and still never need to lift a finger again. It's a publicity stunt.

Say what you like about Vista and Bill Gates as a person, but there's no denying the incomparable qualities the .NET Framework has.

And as others have mentioned, his altruistic nature is often underestimated.

Anything non-Sony is shite in Weaste's fantasy world.

Go and find out what Chuck said.

I do not have a Sony computer and do not run a Sony operating system on any of them, so go figure. Typical of people like you on here and the wider Internet, crappy one liners and regurgitating what the media say without ever trying to understand it.

Say what you like about Vista and Bill Gates as a person.

I'm not having a go at him as a person, I don't know the bloke. But I can say that he's a talentless little shit (technically) that contrary to what he's saying now, didn't know what he was doing in the first place (Chuck Peddle reference), and through the largest bit of luck ever to bestow itself on one person in the history of this planet, has totally ruined personal computing. He might well have made good business, but he could (if he had known what he was fecking well doing, which he didn't) have made things great as well. Cowboy builders, plumbers, electricians make money, they make a lot. It doesn't mean that what they do is of any quality, and if we look at this man's legacy, he's the biggest fecking cowboy that has ever been and will ever be.

The .NET framework is nothing more than an Oak (sorry, Java) ripoff.

.NET supports multiple programming languages and remains platform agnostic and is standardised so that other vendors can implement it on other platforms - Although Microsoft's implementation only targets their own platform (quite obviously).

The Java platform "Write once, run anywhere" supports only the Java language but on many operating systems, although other languages are supported they aren't used.

For me the restriction of platforms is a lot less of a problem than the restriction of integration with other languages, and this holds true for many businesses that quite often use mulitple languages but less often use mulitple platforms, it's this integration which for me tips the balance in favor of .Net
