Bill Maher's new movie 'Religulous'

meh. I wasn't really that impressed. There are some funny moments but overall it didn't bring anything new to the discussion.

i agree, but this is the entertainment forum ... if it brought anything new the caf is not the place I'd come to discuss it ! then again ... ?

I only half recognise him , so there was no expectation at all on my part ... always helps

 fair point.

I guess as someone who is familiar with the argument, I was hoping for some new insight.

Worth a watch for the head of that church for "former" gay men, though. That scene was funny.

totally, and the Holy Land Experience in Orlando was an eye opener !

Maher should have gone to places like Riad, Amman, Kairo, etc and openly mock Islam. Imagine how much fun that would have been!!

Oh I forgot, when mocking religion then remember to stick to mocking Christianity. Those folks usually turn the other cheek and just take the beating ;-)

mocking is not actually a beating , sticks and stones .... and all that

he's not really mocking religion, though. what he is doing in the film is claiming its time has passed. although he does use humour to point out some obvious fallacies.

he does give himslef all the good punchlines though!

I agree with Doc Dwayne that it wasn't bringing much new to the discussion, but I thought it was fecking funny and at times pretty outrageous ("not knocking religion", Dwayne? Are you serious?). Maher is definitely funnier than I thought - he's like a slightly less charmless Larry David.

I think it was more aimed at people who go through the motions of religion but secretly think it's a load of bollocks than paid-up non-believers like me.

It's interesting that he's half Jewish and half Catholic, cos I thought my lot and the Catholics got off lightly. I mean, he went to Israel but didn't bother going to the settlements, which is where you'd go if you wanted to meet crazy religious Jews endangering the world. As for Catholics, they all just agreed with him! Who was that hilarious, slightly mental but likable cardinal outside the Vatican? Maher - "Is Catholicism really monotheistic?" Cardinal - "Get outta here! Course it ain't!" or something like that. Putting that text-message up over that very affable Muslim bloke in Jerusalem was pretty offensive I thought (though also funny).

Didn't think it was very well-made or coherent - the same goes for most of Larry Charles' stuff. It was also a bit out of order the way they edited it, though fecking hilarious - the way people would claim stuff was in the bible, and they'd put subtitles up saying "no it's not"

I really dislike him, and think he is an arrogant twat, funny that that is the name of his film considering his holier than now attitude.

Why haven't I heard of this? Sounds like something I would enjoy...

Will have to check it out after Plech's review.
