CRAPPY TACTICS:

Inspiration: Brazil's 1970 WC winning team

Tactics:

  • Grosics, solid keeper at the back. Santamaria & Hummels compliment each other well. Hummels ability on the ball allows the team to build from the back. He can link up with full backs and Gerson in particular for it. Both full backs are solid defenders who can also assist in attack, schnellinger especially.
  • Gerson plays the same exact pivotal role as he did for 70s Brazil team. Forms a 5 with front 4 when in attacking mode and stays back when defending. Makeleke plays the holding DM role in front 4, providing cover for any of the full backs.
  • Front 4 is complimentary to each other. Jairzinho plays the same role he did in 70s team. Enzo Francescoli & Dzajic combine for the left forward/AM area of the pitch, with Dzajic providing the width and more of a presence in the box while Francescoli plays the hybrid LAM/forward role occupying left attacking midfield space more. Puskas has the range to stitch up the front 4 together given his role in the golden Hungarian team, he will roam free to take up positions as required.

MAZHAR TACTICS:

Attacking shape:

This team is set up to let both Valderrama and Maradona thrive and fully express themselves whilst keeping the team solid and very difficult to break down.

  • Philosophy: inspired by Marcelo Lippi
  • Off the ball: mid-block defensive shape
    • Davids to offer added cover to the left side of the field when Evra pushes up
    • When the team is set in their shape, Schweini and Davids will be instructed to press and unsettle anyone receiving the ball in the more central areas
    • Maradona and Weah will hassle the back line with Valderrama using his positioning to cut off the passing options through the midfield
    • Causio will look to close down and track the opposing left wing back whilst Evra will stick close to his opposing right winger with necessary support from Chiellini and/or Davids
    • Gentile will focus on the opposing inside left attacking player and prevent him from getting settled on the ball
  • Attacking approach:
    • The back 5 will build up attacks via short passes but will be encouraged to look long to Weah, Maradona, and Causio when dealing with a high press
    • Evra to push up on the left side with Chiellini shifting further left to cover the left flank
    • Davids-Schweini double pivot
    • Valderrama given a free role to pick up the ball in deeper areas and dictate the tempo with support from Davids and Schweini for give-and-gos
    • Maradona given a free role and roam across the front line
    • Weah made to occupy the back line with his runs and play give-and-gos with the other attacking players
Out goes Pep, and in comes Valderrama. Valderrama loved to pass the ball and keep it moving, and with dynamic players around him, he will have many options to play through as well as play one-touch football with. As a player, he was very difficult to dispossess, and his presence should open up the spaces for Maradona and co. to thrive in. To compensate for his lack of dynamism and athleticism, Franco Causio comes in to add some guile and directness to the right flank as well as some sweet crosses into the box for Weah. On the opposite flank, Evra comes in for Alba to offer some more defensive solidity whilst not compromising too much on the attacking output. The midfield is upgraded with one of the best B2B midfielders ever in Schweinsteiger replacing Bonhof and offering his own all-action style to cover for Valderrama and make the midfield even more difficult to penetrate.

Not really seeing the 1970 Brazil element of that team. The fullbacks and Makelele feel out of place and Francescoli and Puskas I don't really see playing like Tostao and Pele.

@mazhar13 Who defends the left flank in the defensive phase alongside Evra.
That'll depend on the situation. If Evra pushes up, and one of the opposition players makes a run out to the left wing behind him, it's Chiellini. If a withdrawn player drifts out wide, then it's Davids. If a forward drifts out wide to support the winger, it's Chiellini.

Gotcha. I looked again and realised it's really a back 5 so that makes sense.

Congrats @mazhar13. I am personally at a loss to understand how the attacking 4 of Diego, Weah, Valderrama & Causio is working together but maybe it is just about Diego being able to make a difference here...

Also Evra is completely misplaced here. There is no basis for him to run that left wing alone. He never had a prolific output in terms of assists or goals to occupy a whole wing similar to someone like Davi Alves or Carlos. Like how he is even to going to function when has to deal with Jairzinho. There is basically no attacking outlet on left for your team.

Maradona in his free, roaming role is what is the key here. Any other #10, and I wouldn't consider a more defensive wing back like Evra. Evra, however, can perform that role very well as he did with Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of him as a more inside forward or Rooney on the left of a front 3 from time to time. Sure, he's not the guy to man the flank on his own like a top tier wing back, but that's not what I want him here for; he's here to offer support to Maradona, who will spend more time on the left side than on the right side. Causio manning the right flank means that Maradona can operate more centrally and focus more on the left side of the field where he can still do a whole lot of damage. Maradona himself is comfortable all over the front line, so your team will still need to worry about him when he enters the left flank.

Here's Maradona playing this exact role against Bulgaria in the '86 World Cup and looking very comfortable:

Mind you, he basically ran the team here, but in my side, he doesn't need to do as much heavy lifting.

Valderrama functions more like a midfielder here than a forward, and he's in the team to retain possession under pressure and play through the other attacking players as well as one of the B2B midfielders who can push forward. There's no risk of him stepping on Maradona's toes, and he'll allow Causio to operate higher up and pin Schnellinger back when we're on the ball.

Not gonna lie, the scoreline should've been closer than this given your lineup. If you were able to field Sánchez in your XI, my team would've been in a tougher spot.

Came on too late to vote. I see some issues with both teams to be honest.

@mazhar13 I reckon you need a better player than Pique there who can run the game since you're committing resources that can technically protect him. Also you need defensive balance on your left flank and need to hook Valderrama for someone who can play like a forward but also offer defensive stability. Think Riva or Stoichkov.

I understand re:Piqué. With that said, he was very good at that during his career.

On Valderrama, that's why I played this setup; the left flank has enough protection with Evra as a supporting wing back and Chiellini + Davids helping him out. For the next round, I'll certainly see if I can upgrade on that. Even then, once again, Maradona was very good at supporting his defence; he was no luxury player at his peak.
