Quinn is a gentleman in todays game and he and Keane cannot be compared on characteristic of gentlemanly conduct.
Quinn wants to be a peace-maker, and diplomat and went to Keane to shake hands. Now that wasnt the wisest thing to do as he knows how Keane feels about him but Quinn has always extended the hand of friendship to even those who resent him.
As for Keane today, I saw it on the Irish Premiership and the analysis was great with Dunphy.
This was a different kind of Keane scuffle, he and Trig were even smiling at each other gesticulating.
The elbow was a sly one, dont think it was intended to floor Trig, I dont think he wanted to do that but more a gesture to let him know that he wasnt getting one over on him. Foolish but his personal pride took priority over the team and that is sad for a captain.
But as Eamon Dunphy says : "Keane is a package and knowing temprement , there is still not one coach in the world that would refuse that package"</strong><hr></blockquote>
Personally, I think Quinn always milks situations to come out smelling like roses. What did he have to do with Keane's sending off today? Why should he have to shake hands? He wasn't the recipient of the elbow nor was there any meaningful contact between him and Keane.
Same situation as it was after the World Cup. If he genuinely wanted to broker a peace and get Keane back, he shouldn't have talked to the press about it. Get it done, get it over with and shut the hell up. But noo...
Quinn is a media animal and has always been. He's not a dirty player or a shite person, but he always has to come out on top.

Have to agree --after all if Big Niall just wanted to shake hands and express "no hard feelings" ... couldn't it have been done in private? Away form the cameras?
Feels like another PR exercise from Saint Niall ...

So unless I agree with you that Niall is a saint I am not allowed an opinion?
If you check what I questioned -- I asked why Niall had to shake in public -- if he is a man of such great moral standards then what is so wrong with making peace in private?
Secondly Dunphy has never formed my opinions of anything from Manchester United to U2 -- I am capable of making up my own mind.
I'm sure Niall Quinn is a nice guy but why the need for the constant public displays?

No one, yet I bet in both cases, the sum was substantial. They've even been slated in the papers for not giving ANY money, yet neither has spoken out to correct the media's mistakes.
Quinn comes along and says he's giving a mill to charity. Fine. No need to slag off others for not giving as well. No need to proclaim himself as the most generous chappie in the Premiership.
Professional footballers have to manipulate the media in some way to remain popular. Roy is spectacularly bad at doing it, while Niall Quinn is particularly good. Don't let it fool you. I like straight talking, honest, no monkey business people, and Niall Quinn doesn't measure up to Roy Keane in that respect.</strong><hr></blockquote>
You are overly cynical
He gave £1 million to help kids and all you want to do is punch holes in his gesture.
He never spoke a word of being a great guy.
He never accused anyone for not giving money.
How do you know if Giggs gave anything <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Quinn is a gentleman and a man of integrity. He speaks highly of everyone. He is not as good a player as Roy Keane however I know a chap at Sunderland, Clifford Byrne - watch out for him. He has spoken so highly of the work Quinn does behind the scenes at Sunderland to help youngsters who come over from Ireland to settle in. I am not saying doesnt do that but Quinn wants to be friends with everyone and that is no crime my friend. The man will always turn his cheek and offer a friendly hand.

Dont let narrow minded little events smear your opinions of Quinn.
OK - he played for City but he gave £1 million to help small children fight cancer and to have a life. Respect to a gentleman.</strong><hr></blockquote>
I have no doubt that Quinn is a generous person, even a good one. However, I take a very dim view of his attempts to make himself look better than his fellow professionals. I believe that if you look, I mean really look, at people like Giggsy, Becks, and even Keano, just to take some United examples, you'll find that they do contribute to society on a very regular basis. They just don't talk about it.
Quinn's gesture with his testimonial money was admirable, but the way he handled the media then, and the way he behaved today, was not what I would call gentlemanly.

My comments of anger were aimed at Ninja and you are allowed have an opinion but some have poked holes in his gesture of humanity and that is sad.
If you want to question Niall fine, but some are calling into question his charitable gesture. I think his gesture to shake his hand was wrong. Keane was never gonna accept it but none-the-less Quinn is a man that will try to settle a fight in an amicable matter.

It came out after Gary Nev said he didn't want a testimonial. Giggsy gave an undisclosed amount to an unnamed childrens hospital in Manchester, which was believed to be more than half the money he received. Sir Alex gave as well, though the cause and amount was unknown.
I remember a quote by Quinn that said, "Most footballers today don't need the money. It should go to more worthy causes that benefit a wider range of people." When I read it I felt disgusted because he could hardly know who needs or doesn't need the money. Or what other footballers were doing with their testimonial money. However, again, its possible that he was badly misquoted (as is so common nowadays). To say he slagged off other footballers was a bit unfair and I apologise.

Well, he did - if you are so in the need of knowing if Giggsy and other footballers give to charity, I suggest you contact Giggs directly and ask him what he gave. He will probably ask you to piss off and mind your own business, as I've would have as well, but he did give a substantial amount.
When (if) you give to charity, do you feel the need of making it public, and does it make you feel better if other people know you do?

I have no doubt that they do, and Jason McAteer even wrote in his World Cup Diary that Keane is misunderstood and that he visits sick children in Dublin when there on internationals and when I say sick I mean terminally ill kids and not those that have cut their head. Fair played to Roy for that. Beckham also helped that poor girl aswell.
Quinn on the other part raised awerness through the media to gain more money as there were non-attendance tickets on sale here in the Republic.
I have no problem with the question of his motives, I think Quinn was wrong but I dont like his character called into question.
I think some people have back-tracked here and made their points better explained as the thread has progressed. I dont want to black list my name
Question his intentions if you please but not the mans moral convictions.

Like you I have problems with the hand shake -- the timing -- after a guy is sent off hardly seems like a good time ... and the place .. in front of the cameras ...
What Quinn has done and done well is to question the need for testimonials at a time when premiership footballers in particular are financially secure very early in life -- I remember an interview with Phil Babb on the Pat Kenny show soon after he signed for Liverpool and he admitted that he would never have to work again after his careeer was over!!
It would be all too easy to continue to take -- Niall has questioned the need for these games -- frankly I think there is no longer any need for them.
For this I do thank him!

I do give to charity, sight savers. Do I make it public ? - no
Quinn raised awerness of his testimonial and increased ticket sales and even had non attendance tickets printed here in Ireland so as to help Crumlin Hospital and those in Sunderland.
Hopefully other big names will follow suit. Hopefully the likes of our Jamie Carragher will do the same. I have not criticised Giggs but if you look at the childish view of Quinn in this thread you will see that what is said is much unwarrented.
I defend Keane on KT when I feel he is right. My admiration of Solskjaer is also known whenever the topic brought up. If I feel someone disrespects Alex Ferguson and his achievements on a KT I let them know that they are wrong.
Lets stand back from club allegiances on such topics and speak the truth !

Look, I am prepared to leave it their, I dont want to resort to name calling. I have made my point.
My arguement was never over his handshake, it was badly timed. But other things were not warranted.
And both you and I know that Ray Cosgrove is the Michael Owen of GAA Armagh should save themselves the trip to Croker
