The Blues development squad were given the opportunity to test themselves against some of the best young players in the country earlier this week when they took on Manchester United U19s.

The behind-closed-door fixture took place at United's Carrington training ground and Blues emerged as 2-1 winners, thanks to goals from Kwadwo Asamoah and Peter Lovenkrands.

The hosts used the match as a warm-up for their upcoming participation in the Youth Champions' League.

United took the lead early in the game, before Asamoah came off the substitutes' bench to equalise midway through the second half and then Lovenkrands sealed the win late on.

Development squad manager Richard Beale (pictured) was naturally pleased with the win, but more importantly happy with the opportunity the fixture afforded his players.

"Whatever age group you play at Manchester United, you know they are always going to have quality players," he said.

"They are a good side and they caused us some real problems in the first half with their movement and took an early lead.

"But we came into the game more in the second half and we got to grips with it a bit better and scored the two goals which was pleasing."

Beale continued: "We've started a bit of a relationship with Man Utd and they want us to come and play them in training games two or three three times a year.

"It's a great opportunity for our lads to play at the best training ground against top players even if they are U19s.

"For our young players in particular it shows them the standards that are required at the highest level."

Are we seeing these type of games more now or have they always been a regular thing? Don't remember hearing about as many in so short a time to be honest.
 
Wilson scored in the first half and we led 1-0 at the break. Will Keane came on as a second half sub making his first return after his lay-off.

The team I believe was mostly the same line-up as last years U/18 regulars...

Will be interesting to see how much the injury has hampered his development. From an optimist point of vies one could argue that, at the age of 19, the timing could have been worst.
