Best Player Never to have Played for United

I'd like to ask forum members who they believed to be the best player never to have played for United and i'd like to say i believe that Tony Adams at his majestic best was one of the greatest defenders in the world during the height of his career and would have been at the heart of the OT defence as well for many years. He had it all, bravery ,respect from his teammates and opposition alike and he was a good hard honest player, i would have loved to have seen him in the red of United.Mind we did have a couple of good'uns ourselves in Bruce and Pally so we weren't to bad off i suppose

Neil, does it not leave you gutted that Fergie watched ZZ play for Bordeaux in 1996 before he sgned for Juventus and turned down the chance coz he thought he was too similar to Eric.

Another good one would have to be van Basten and Gullit. Doesn't Fergie claim in one of his books that he tried to sign them but AC Milan had already secured 'em.

Wouldn't it make a good book about those who nearly signed. gary Lineker being rejected by Bojangles because he thought Stapleton was better!?!

Emille Heskey

Oh wait, I thought you ment players that its best they never have played for United.

too many brilliant players never played for United...

those are all blunders in hindsight. I guess the list really could be endless though. I remember the Zidane one in particular. I also remember we looked at John Barnes before he went to Liverpool and look how that turned out.

Not sure about a good book, but for Spurs thats all they almost get anyway.

True. What I mean about a book is the stories relating to just how close we came. In Crick's book on Fergie, he mentions about SAF and Edwards going to Gazza's agents house in London and SAF sitting with Gazza for an hour leaving him convinced that he should join the shirts.

Agree that in hindsight they all look smart moves. Still, it's good to dream...

Who would have thought back then we'd be signing big money players like Ferdinand, Ruud and Veron?

I don't understand this at all.

He was the greatest footballer this country has ever produced. All he needed in my opinion was to managed by Ferguson at United and he would have been a legend on a par with Maradona and Pele.

agreed. bad decision on Stans part.
I was watching him on Football Focus on Saturday and to me he came across as a thoughtful & well spoken man, which makes me wonder how he ever got himself into such messes. Maybe he lacks common sense.

is that the same majestic Tony Adams who played against Marco Van Basten in 1988?

Adams was great at Club level, but i never ever really thought that he was great at International level.

I've always had immense respect for Stan for a number of reasons:
1. He reportedly cried when he discovered United had signed Cole and not him (his agent Paul Stretford claimed)
2. He refused to live in Murkeyside.
3. He took the p*** out of the scousers when he got sent off for fighting with one of 'em at Villa doing a Harry Enfield 'Calm down, calm down' impression.
4. He allegedly shared his video of him and Ulrika with his teammates at Fulham on the team coach.

Stan is a good lad.

Sorry, I don't agree. What is arrogant of discussing about the great players who never played for the club and imagining where they would have fitted in? Maybe the wording should indicate the great players we came close to signing but isn't this what all fans do when talking about who they'd like to sign?

please explain how a discussion on this subject could be deemed to be arrogant i do believe such a flippant remark as this to be the height of arrogance. There have been many players over the years I would like to have seen in a united shirt and i'm going back a long way (ive been a united man since 1955) and during that time we have "missed out" on a few great players for one reason or another, then why not bring the thought to the floor of the forum have i missed the point, if i have may be you could educate me as to why the forum exists at all.

I'm sure he didn't mean what he said. After all he did wink.

Eddie, I agree with you. However, do you know if it's true that Di Stefano offered to play for the Reds after Munich? I'm just interested and can just imagine what it would've bene like if the great man had turned out for us.

Red,don't know about the Di Stefano story but what a thought, i do remember reading a story years ago about Daniel Passerella and very young Argentinian upstart some unknown (to the like of us that is)goes by the name of Maradonna being offered to us as part of a million pound package deal but United weren't going to pay a million pound for anybody especially when hardly anyone had heard of whats is name.....?

He is and was a donkey. World class my arse. In donkey terms he was on a par with Heskey and Stam just before Fergie sold him.

nearly as ridiculous as a dutchman supporting united how many games you get to last year ,plum

Maradona is the greatest player ever IMO, so in the theme of this topic, it's a shame we never signed him. He would've been the natural heir to George Best.
I suppose the best we ever actually missed out on was Alan Shearer. Love him or loathe him, he is unquestionably the best English striker of the past decade or so, and with him and Eric up front, we would've been incredible and the greatest team in Europe.

If some of these players played for MU,maybe there would be a chance for 18 leagues and 4 Euro cups. ;)

The 18 Leagues and 4 Euro Cups you haven't improved upon in over a decade ?
