Post the best gig you ever went to, plus a few words explaining why

For me

Nirvana, Bradford University, November 1991

This gig was the very same week that Smells Like Teen Spirit was released as a single. They were on the cusp of mega-stardom, little did anyone know. The buzz about this band was unprecedented. feck knows how i managed to get a ticket.

I was 16 years old. It was a tiny venue. The crowd were just fecking ape, it was nuts. Everyone in the place knew they were witnessing something special that night. Kurt's only words to the crowd throughout the whole gig were ''cheers you feckers''.

I came out of there with my head bleeding from Doc Martin wearing stage divers

This gig changed my life

RIP Kurt

Roger waters, last year, he played all the dark side of the moon and then, random pink floyd songs

when he started singing wish you where here i thought i could die at that moment cause my life was complete

when he started singing "confortably numb" i just died and resucitate

Tough question, there have been some great ones over the years, Blur at Manc Apollo on the Think Tank tour, Chemical Brothers at V97, the Underworld gig the other week was pretty damn good as you well know Franco, but unsurprisingly it's Radiohead for me.

May 2006 at the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool. This was just about the perfect gig, nice intimate venue "Packed like Sardines" (see what I did there?) every man and woman a true fan it seemed. I have never known an atmosphere like it at a gig, everyone knew all the words, were singing along and the place bounced, litterary been moved around with the croud for all the big numbers. The band were buzzing of it as well and played an absolute blinder.

Will live long in the memory, and will take something monumental to top it.

Very envious Marcos.

Underworld were awesome Rednome.

However, I must confess, I don't remember a great deal about the night.... I was pretty wasted..... or..... ''comfortably numb''

Hehe, two hours solid raving for me, was absolutely fecked the next day, loved it though, and I had waited long enough to finally see them too.

So many different ways to judge this. The Levellers while twatted on acid in Cornwall in 98 was a bloody good laugh. The Beastie Boys in Brixton Acadamy a few years before that was up there too. Red hot Chili Peppers at Reading 94 was probably the best though - I had been waiting so long for them to come to the UK.

AC/DC Hammersmith Odeon

It was the Hells Bells tour of 1980 ish and they were awesome. I had the album and knew all the songs and I was 16 or 17 and went with 3 mates. We drunk too much beer and the gig went on too late and we missed the last train home. We got a London cab and gave him all the money in our pockets which got us within 5 miles of home. We then walked in sub zero temperatures at 2 in the morning in t-shirts.

Best gig ever

The Tragically Hip

Hamilton Copps Colliseum
December 30, 2002

The quintessential Canadian rock band playing in fornt of a full house. Had floor seats about 18 rows back. Amazing! When they broke into Nautical Disaster I got goosebumps! Still get goosebumps thinking about it.

Its funny how some of the best gigs always have to have that kind of triumph over adversity element. My mate and I went to see Oasis in Sheffield when we were about 15 - getting a bus up from London. We took feck all with us cause we didnt want to have to deal with the cloak rooms and stuff - we hadnt really thought it through. At the end of the gig we were soaked with sweat and water that had been thrown about, it was freezing cold and we had to get on the bus without a change of clothes or coats for the bus journey back down south. We only had enough money to buy 8 chocolate bars for £2 from a motorway service station. When we got back to London it was about 4 in the morning and we were miles away from home and had to deal with night buses. But somehow all that only adds the the brilliance of the memory.

Radiohead - Vfestival, Chelmsford 2006

It was the fifth time I'd seen Radiohead and having seen the band through many phases it was great to see them on top form and finally comfortable with themselves and their place in music history. I've never seen Thom so visibly pleased as at the end of the gig standing in front of the crowd singing back to him.

Honorable mentions: Manic Street Preachers at Manchester Apollo, The Black Keys at Manchester Academy.

Probably Queen.
Stafford Bingley Hall 1977.

The reason?

I was so small,I was lifted over the barrier at the front of the stage to stop me getting crushed. I also got Freddie Mercurys tambourine (well, part of it)when he threw it out and me and my friend met the group before the concert.:D
The music was awesome.....and the lights were great .They had a very large crown in lights above the stage that tipped when they first came on stage.....

......I can still remember the atmosphere.......

If anyone has heard "A day at the races" album ,the music at the beginning before "Tie your Mother Down" was how the concert started.......

I still go all goosepimpley when I hear that!

Muscle Bitches
The State- Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada

I don't know if it was the mini guitars with strobe-lights in them, the lucha libre masks or just their names; Lady Demonica, The Reverend Kitten Flesh, Dr. Naughty Pants and whoever is playing on bass. (they've had a couple of members),or just the hardcore metal that they play. Their energy is unsurpassed by any band I've ever seen live. Fires, smoke, nudity. The Muscle Bitches have it all.

I should mention that I've seen them a few times, simply because the show was worth it. Sadly I think they are no more.

Kaizer's Orchestra three years ago. The place was packed and I was close enough to feel the sweat of the vocalist when he pounded on a couple of oil barrels they had on stage.

Pantera / Megadeth in 1992 or 1993, dont remember.

Ice-T, 1993.

Dj Shadow / Massive Attack, last year. Brilliant!

Oasis at the Milton Keynes Bowl. Was such a great gig. Babyshambles were supposed to be supporting but never turned up so the Zutons supported instead. They were fecking amazing. Was all in all a brilliant day out.

Stone Roses at Spike Island - just for the whole experience, not so much the actual show which was pretty unmemorable. Also saw them at Alley Pally (crap sound).

Citys in the Park - mad weekend, met the first Mrs. 77 there.

Went to a James 'secret' gig (billed as 'Jimmy') at the Underworld in Camden around 91...

Always had a good time at B-A-D shows, seen them many many times.

Saw Joe Strummer at the Electric Ballroom supported by Paul Simonon's Havana 3am who played 'London Calling'... Strummer did a load of Clash #'s too... awsome.

Saw the Stones at Wemberly from the Royal Box... gig was so-so but the VIP treatment was top notch.

Saw Pearl Jam support The Cult an Finsbury Park, PJ were crap but The Cult were on great form. It actually started raining when they did 'Here comes the Rain'... totally on cue.

Pantera / Megadeth in 1992 or 1993, dont remember.

Ice-T, 1993.

Dj Shadow / Massive Attack, last year. Brilliant!

I saw the same line up at Manchester Apollo. Presumably it was the same tour. Pantera were amazing

The The at the Albert Hall - brilliant, Marr era.

last night my son and I saw Springsteen in St. Paul.....we won the pit lottery and were up against the front stage center...Springsteen was right in front....touched his hand

just the best gig not just for the great show but for the experience I had watching it with my son...first springsteen concert for him....

Either Rammstein at brixton, Marilyn Manson at Leeds Festival I think or Disturbed somewhere.
And Machine Head a few years ago at Download Festival

I think you mean the Sunday mainstager at 2004...they were amazing.

Alexisonfire - Taste of Chaos 2006 - they were pant shittingly good.

Depeche Mode on September 25, 1999 @ Amneville Galaxy near Metz in France

Awesome!!! Was the best concert in the tour according to Dave Gahan (the lead singer).

Just like some of you, thought my life would be complete but last week (just out of curiosity) I saw Pulse Live (Pink Floyd) on DVD... my god... I terribly envy the people who were there and experienced that great moment...

Pulse is the Gig and Comfortably Numb was the best part of it... those who haven't watched it, you've missed something...

and yes indeed, RIP Kurt...

Neil Young, Vicar Street Ireland 2003 (capacity 900, all seated show)

Solo Acoustic Show, he played his new album Greendale from start to finish telling the hushed audience the stories behind each song as he played them. Then after that he came out to perform all his hits either solo on guitar, piano or organ... Me and a mate had somehow got excellent balcony tickets and were surrounded by the likes of Bono, the Edge and Bob Geldof,,,, great gig, in a great venue...

Either that or John Martyn in a local pub in Ireland...

Jealousy is dripping from my every pore!

One of the great gigs for me was Bruce back in London 1978 for the Darkness on the Edge of Town tour...a life-defining occasion!

MUSE - Earl's Court, 2004

Just the best concert I've ever been to. MUSE are known for being great showman and by God they are. Matt Bellamy is the most complete human being I've ever witnessed.

My enduring memory is the band playing "Time is Running Out", and Matt holding the last note. Then suddenly the lights went out and everyone started screaming even louder (the note was still being held), before the opening riff of "Plug In Baby" ripped through Earl's Court.

I get goosepimples thinking of that.

Hard to put my finger on favourite gig as I've been to too many that i've come out saying "thats the best gig i've ever been too...."

The Gorillas gig in the Olympia in Dublin was amazing. They all played behind a screen with lights. Truly amazing concept and fantastic music to go with the stage show. I was well and truly stoned that day also. It was a Sunday and I spent about an hour rollin pre-rollers for the gig and just aswell because everyone was tokin away.

Damon Albarn really is a fecking genius as he keeps takin music to a level that the knob-head Gallaghers can only aspire to. And to think I was on the side of Oasis when that tacky feud was about!

Grandmaster Flash in Red Box, Dublin 2000/01 (3hr set) - no need to explain!

Sugarhill Gang in Hop Press Hall of Fame a few months before - oh yeah!

Simon and Garfunkel July 2004 at the Royal Dublin Showgrounds (RDS) was a very special gig. There's alot of peace and love about their music and in many ways i'm a hippie at heart so hearing them sing "Sound of Silence" was amazing as it represented their stance against the Vietnam War and the request for world peace and to love as much as you can.

The Pogues December 2005 at the Point, Dublin. Absolutely wicked gig and I finally got to have the pleasure of seeing the genius that is Shane MacGowan and genius that is The Pogues.

I could go on about them but when I say Ronnie Drew from the Legendary Irish Traditional group - The Dubliners joined the Pogues on stage for the "Irish Rover" - thats the moment you know how much you love your country and its traditions of music, song and dance!

Metalica, Earls Court St Anger Tour,

Just such a good band, need i say more?

or System of a down, Brixton.

You said it Pal, fecking fantastic band. I've still to see them live - like a stupid bastard I am. I've had enough opportunities but havent taken any of them but I'll sort that out next time they come to Dub.

It will be worth it, trust me! very probably my favourite band. Its tough though.

for historic purposes only (the show was shit), the triple header of Faith No More, Guns 'N Roses & Metallica at the Olymic Stadium in Montreal.

It was the night James Hetfield was burned by the pyro and Axl walked off which incited a riot.

Other than that, Pink Floyd or U2 at the Olympic Stadium were both excellent.

I think you mean the Sunday mainstager at 2004...they were amazing.

Alexisonfire - Taste of Chaos 2006 - they were pant shittingly good.

Saw Alexisonfire at GIAN, they were pretty disappointing. Looking forward to seeing Rise against and Gallows. Rise against are the one band I haven't seen that would pretty much complete my list. And Gallows are pretty much a must as apparently they're not going to be around for long.

Best bands I have ever seen live are probably AFI or Dropkick. Special mention to Muse for getting me backstage tickets to their gigs, but as I have seen them more times than I can remember I'm not going to include them.

I've seen Gallows live and its a fecking scary experience!
When i saw AFI about 3 years ago i think, i remember coming away slightly dissapointed.
Rise Against live are brilliant, seen 'em 3 times.
