Most Games are played with ONE Ball but the REAL g
Roma's Walter Samuel and Leverkusun's Lucio are the best we could go for centre backs. They are young, very strong and also would be money spent wisely. Why should we spend 25-30mil on Nesta or Thuram when we could get two young, top defenders for the same price.

SAF was in Glasgow last night, not only to watch the cup final but also to scout Lucio. (Just a prediction ;) )

IMHO Lucio would be an excellant signing, quick, solid, good in the air, skilfull and a 200 percenter..Just the type of player we are looking for.

Walter Sameul and Lucio .... welll ... When the Gold Cup start or some SAmerican Cup on the way - you will find us "EMPTY" in CB department !!! ... both the guy will be gone !! ... and we will use some make shift one then ?

I actually rate Weir quite highly ... he has got very good determination everytime I see him play ... But IMO he can't be that "MAIN" CB in the team ... he will need another STAR to make himself comfortable ... and he can do a very good job !! ... btw, he's not young though ... 30 ?

We still have Brown, G. Neville, Silvestre, Blanc if he may stay. But this would not be a major problem though.

Thx Roy for giving Lucio and Placente to Leverkusen.

;)

Lucio is a top class player, (I have said this before) If we sign him we will not be sorry. I would also like to see Ze Roberto in our side. He is something like Roberto Carlos with more skill and less shit.

Wouldn't be too sure about Lucio. Brazilians have never really adapted to the Engligh game. It would be too much of a risk.
Ayala and Thuram would do for me... please!

You guys keep making the comment on South American cups (I guess thanks to Yorke, who BTW, is not South American). Get your facts right, the Copa America is played in July!!!! Do you really care if Lucio plays 5-6 games in July (if he does, which I doubt for the Brazilian national team at Copa America is mainly based on young players who get called up in order to be shown to the world, Brazilian national managers get a lot of money from player agents for doing that).

Actually, that's how Lucio made it to Leverkusen, if our scouts could be arsed they could have got him very cheap not so long ago...

:(

WC qualifying round will be killing enough ...
and that happens through out the season ..

Just quoting it for a point to consider here ... and the Work Permit thing again will make it difficult as normal ... You don release your players then they don get enough national apperance for WP renewal ... You let them go and it will deplete the side ...

Plenty of talent there at SAmerica though that's not a fact I want ot deny here ...

The BEST choice we should go for is Cannavaro and Thuram. Both are very experienced, proven defender and they can complement each other well. They also have the added bonus of being partnered in Parma before.

I haven't watched many matches of Lucio. From the matches I watched he is good. But I also heard that he like to go forward to attack very much, which may not be the type of CB we want.

How about discussing the BEST REALISTIC choice we should go for? Nesta, Cannaviro, Sammual, they are all great players, but all are unrealistic targets. (They will come to Utd only in your dreams or in a computer game). So here are my choices:
Best "dream" CB purchase: Cannavaro, Thuram
Best "realistic" CB purchase: Thuram, Ayala

IMO only one will come ... will be one CB and one R/LB this off-season .... If it's 2 CB then one of them must be some cheap buy intended to just get a "try out" ... but I hope this is the scenario though ... Johnsen cost a low 1.5mil and he has done a good good job here !! ... .With a smaller price tag over the head, it will normally give the player the necessary time to adapt without getting too much of attention and negative impact from the external world ...

No need for all capitals in the topic title Cantona07! Ta!

Pecking order should be as thus:

1. Thuram
2. Ayala
3. Mexes
4. Nesta
5. Hofland

I think one of Ayala and Thuram should come, with Mexes signing later.

Cannavaro is joining Juventus.

Thuram is a huge possibility but depending if United can pay the price.

Lucio is a quality defender. Not only for his defensive capabilities but his attacking capabilities as well. I disagree with the point that we may not want such a defender. If thats really the case why do you want Thuram to join. He also likes going forward

Why couldn't we afford Thuram ? His price will only go down with age and I doubt it will exceed 15m, in which case we will have no problem signing Thuram with money to spare.

Matches over the season (WC quals) coincide with European WC or EuroChamp qualifiers for the exact reason that most players are in Europe.

Unless you have playoffs against Australia, oops!, the Oceania winner (one-off 2-week absence over a four year period) which is unlikely to be the case with both Argentina and Brazil.
