Reading threads about best centre halves etc puts me in mood. I'm sure this has been done many times before, probably too many but I thought I'd add my two bobs worth.

Goalie. Peter Schmeichel - by a mile.

Full backs Denis Irwin and Johnny Carey. Carey was before my time but everything I read points to him. Honourable mentions to Roger Byrne and Tony Dunn.

Two strikers. Eric Cantona and Denis Law. Both impossible to leave out. Pity about Tommy Taylor missing.

George Best clearly takes a wing spot. The rest gets very tricky.

Central midfield. from Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton, Bryan Robson and Roy Keane. David Beckham has not played enough in CM to challenge the fist four.

Opposite wing to George Best. Bobby Charlton (if he misses a CM spot), Ryan Giggs or David Beckham.

Central defence. Jaap Stam and Paul McGrath.

Ideally I would have Robbo rather than Giggsy so I think Bobby Charlton on the wing, with Keano and Robbo inside.

The biggest omission is Duncan Edwards. He has to play. The most obvious to make way is Paul McGrath.

Final side
Schmeichel
Carey, Stam, Edwards, Irwin
Charlton, Keane, Robson, Best
Cantona, Law.

The biggest omission is Duncan Edwards.

You have to be kidding.! Dunc would be the FIRST on any list. How the hell do you have to make way for HIM. There never has been or probally will ever be a more complete player than him. I think people read about him and think he was the figment of peoples imagination because they all wrote good things about him. Well I can tell you when ever he came out on the field you could "feel" his authority, a bit like Keano. You have to remember that he was also only 21. God only knows what he would have been .

I think only a lucky few who had actually seen him play would be able to make that assessment.

Me being born in 1971, can only guess at his abilities due to the dearth of TV footage on him.

:(

Carey was unfortunately not a full back

Marcus. Yes I am very lucky as was Red Pat. He was all and more they said he was.

Duncan Edwards starts, there is no question about that. Only Best (and possibly Cantona) compare with him. I feel it is easier to drop McGrath than one of the front six.

He played many positions. He played full back when United won the 1948 Cup Final.

Irwin
Edwards
Buchan

Best
Robson
Charlton
Coppell
Law

Totally agree. He was, and probably always will be, my favourite player ever. I would have him ahead of Stam any day. I watched him in the youth team right through to his appearences for the full England team and will never forget his power and authority, yet I never saw him do a spiteful thing in his short life.

Without upsetting anyone, i would like to give my favourite team. I was not around to appreciate the busby babes, so hear goes:-
Schmeichal
Irwin
McGrath
Stam
moran(out of position, but could play anywhere)
Giggs
Robson
Keane
Beckham
Cantona
Hughes

by all accounts Edwards should be in there. But Stam instead of McGrath? i dont think so!
McGrath was Stam and then some! He also brought attacking prowess whereas Stam looked lost over the halfway line.

Carey most certainly was a full back although he could also play centre half. Byrne and Tony Dunne ahead of Denis. What about a place for Pat Crerand, the best creative midfielder we've ever had ? Tommy Taylor to lead the line with the incomparable Denis Law alongside. I'd rather have McGrath than Stam and Nobby to play alongside.

Schmeicel
Carey (capt) Mcgrath Stiles Byrne
Best Crerand Edwards Charlton
Taylor Law

I find it funny and strange that only Schmeichel made it in your allstar team, because United had more trophies in the last 1o years then ever before. IMO Keane,Cantona,Giggs and Becks should be all in an United alltime 11.

It's more difficult to choose who to leave out in these exercises. You could argue that Cantona, the catalyst for United's success in the 90's should definitely start, but whose place would he take? I prefer Taylor as astriker as his record is second to none. Having Edwards in the side as a ball winner and just about everything else, I would want a creative midfielder to play alongside and I think Crerand would be better equipped for that job than Keane. Unfortunately Giggs and Becks are simply not good enough to displace either Best or Charlton in my formation.

Because we had more great midfielders and strikes than defenders , I would go for 3-4-3 formation

Schmeichel

McGrath Edwards Stilles

Beckham Keane Robson Best

Charlton Cantona Giggs

Not shure if the formation would work, but this team includes most of the great ones.

I find it hilarious that anyone could leave Roy Keane out of any Utd all time eleven

What, no full backs and worst of all no Denis Law ? - you must be joking !

I once read that Carey played in every position for United except outside left. Including goalkeeper. And fullback.

He was a few years before my time, so I can't confirm it.

Oh I forgot somehow the great Denis Law. Can`t believe it :o :o . So I would change him with Giggs.
I think you don`t need full backs if you play with 3 men at the back. The midfielder at the side (Beckham and Best) would have to do some defensive work; ok I know it is not their strength but we are looking for the United team including the greatest players and not for the one that would work perfect in reality ;)

them two are dead certs IMO

Robbo's the best player we've had since Best... and i don't think i'll ever see such a player play for United again...the man was Mr United in the 80's...truly awesome... .

That's my point proven - I saw probably 90% of the games Robo played for us (and the 3-0 thrashing he and Mosses gave us for WBA the year before signing) but I put Keano in cos of his box to box ability.

Even if you tried to post a team for each decade you'd be leaving people out

I only remembered about Hughes after I'd posted he's one the best players I've ever seen.

:(

didn't Robbo have box to box ability?? if anything he had more drive than Keano... how many goals did he score?? god, his appetite was immense.. i can't forget his tough tackling in his own 6 yard box followed by the drive to get foward into the oppositions box... the many a time he scored after a quick one and two into the box...this after a great surging run

if you'd seen 90 percent of his games...he'd defo be in your team.

I'm not, and never would, question how great Robo was. I just made a call and put Keane in instead - my team isnt short of goals in other areas.

My point is how imposible it is to call. There's also questions of how much faster the game is now etc etc.
