Physio Tactics

Tactics
– Direct/ Mixed
Formation – 334 in possession/ 442 is the organised defensive phase
Defensive Line – Balanced
Marking – Zonal

Frank Rijkaard is the key to providing an extra body in midfield during possession (out of possession he will drop into CB) and also frees up Pirri (he scored over 10 goals in five seasons from CM) to play his peak attacking box to box midfield role. Bozsik is in his favoured right-half position and will run the midfield. Florian Albert is the flamboyant, creative dribbling magician who will be a hughe threat on the counter. Batistuta will enjoy excellent service from both Donadoni and Giggs.

Marzolini is regarded as the best Argentine left-back of all time and from all-touch comps is an astute defensive full-back for today’s standards so will fits this role very well. On the other side is the legendary Berti Vogts. In the centre is the legendary Elias Figueroa who kept peak Gerd Muller out of the goals in the 1974 World Cup. Keeping out the goals is the most complete goalkeeper ever, Manuel Neuer. His distribution here will be a great outlet for Giggs, Albert and and Donandoni on the counter.

I just don't see that midfield of Eden's working. Masopust to me is an attacking creative 8 and Tardelli certainly isn't a holder. Replace Rivera with Redondo and it's a perfect midfield. Here it lacks defensive nous and a holder. On the break I can see there being quite a space to be exploited by Albert.

Now I know Sjor hates this but Marzolini as the right-footed left-back with Giggs helping him out will do a top tier job of keeping Messi quiet.

Edit - I'm pretty sure this is the all-touch comp of Masopust I remember watching. He also loves the left-central zone to attack.

It feels like that defensive line was picked in order to make Messi look taller on team’s photos!

To be fair Cannavaro is one of the very few short defenders who were genuinely outstanding in the air but I keep imagining Figueroa and Rijkaard wrecking absolute havoc during attacking set pieces.

 Looking again and that backline is possibly one of the smallest ever.

Thought Eden would have taken the opportunity to balance out that midfield by adding a holding man to replace Rivera. I agree with Physio, I prefer Masopust as the most attack-minded midfielder and Rivera is redundant on a team with Neymar and Messi.
