Becks backs winter break calls ^top
David Beckham has backed calls to introduce a winter break in English football - because he hates leaving his family on Christmas day.
England is the only senior league in western Europe not to implement a winter break system into their footballing calendar. And, with a number of leading figures such as Arsene Wenger, Sven Goran Eriksson, Gerard Houllier and Sir Alex Ferguson all speaking out in favour of having a mid-winter rest, Beckham has added his voice to the growing calls to include a rest period into the Premiership calendar.
However, Beckham cites 'quality family time' as his main criteria for including the break - with the Christmas and New Year period one of the more hectic spells of the football season.
The Manchester United midfielder said: "The players haven't really spoken about it, but I think what is hard over Christmas is being away from our families and seeing your kids' faces when you leave them on Christmas Day.
"That is the hardest part for me and I am sure it is the same for all the other dads who are working, but it happens in most jobs and sometimes that is the way of life."
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, he added: "I would say I would like a break just because of your kids' faces when you walk out that door on Christmas Day, but it is not for me to say what happens. If I went on record saying I wanted a winter break, and I want to be off at Christmas everybody would be up in arms but, we will see what happens."

Is this the same guy who we give 90k a week???..
He shouldn't be saying this.....he gets much more advantages than an ordinary man...first the money and the summer break...the fame,etc,etc....well first time in a long time i'm criticizing Becks...but he still plays good football which counts..

Football on boxing day and New Years day are a traditional part of the game itself, shit even war stopped for a kick about at Chrimbo, how else are you going to get a few hours to yourself before you have to go back to work.

I can understand a winter stoppage in harsher climates with poorer grounds but given Britains milder winters and the under soil heating at all Premier and many lower division grounds there is little to justify an extended winter break.

Many professions work over Christmas for a hell of a lot less money, the poor fecker pulling double time working Christmas day to pay off the debts incurred in the Christmas build up deserves a break, not the overpaid primadonnas of the Premiership. "I'm sorry Brooklyn but daddy's going out to play football with his friends for a few hours at Christmas, but look on the brightside, the money he'll make for that 90 minutes would pay off most people's mortgages, just imagine the pressies he can buy you with that".

Most of the workers have a break either at Christmas, either on New Years day. The money is not a justification. The tradition isn't too. There are hundreds of bad traditions in the world. Anyway a break could be given in January, if people want football at Chrismas As for the footballers, they may earn a lot of money, but they are human beings and they need a rest from time to time. They are not robots. The English players are always tired at national competition in summer, and now it's the case for the French who play in England...I haven't seen the Blackburn game, but I've read Beckham was the only one who had "desire". He was injured last autumn, the others are probably tired.

though I've always enjoyed the Boxing Day / New Years Day clashes, the players are only human and deserve a break, and to be with their families just like everyone else.

Plus it would save Keano playing with a hangover (see book for details) !

To accomplish this we ought to reduce the Prem by two teams. No pissing about, next season, bottom 5 go down ! Imagine the scramble to avoid that :(
