United confirmed the injury late on Saturday evening, after David had a scan on the knock on Friday afternoon.
It is believed he picked up the injury during the 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday night, as he was seen clutching his ribs as he left the pitch.
Becks is out of Sunday's match against West Ham, and possibly the matches against Newcastle and Liverpool.
David joins Roy Keane, Nicky Butt and Rio Ferdinand on the Old Trafford treatment table.
