Goalkeeper:

Hans-Joerg Butt
German international. 27 yrs.

First-rate shotstopper, who is also Bayer's first-choice penalty taker (he might elect to pass on taking a spot-kick against Man Utd as he missed a costly one in a 2-1 loss to Werder last weekend). Possesses extremely fine-tuned reflexes and good positional sense. His hands aren't always the safest but somehow he always seems to keep the ball out of the net. Germany's no. 3 goalkeeper behind Oliver Kahn and Jens Lehmanm.

Defenders:

Jens Nowotny
German international. 30 yrs.

Bayer's skipper and inspirational leader. Widely regarded as the best defender in Germany. Almost unbeatable in the air, precise in the tackle and genuinely quick ( not just for a big-man) World Cup 98 and Euro 2000 veteran.

Lucio (full name Lucimar da Silva Ferreira)
Brazilian international. 23 yrs.

Currently counts as one of Europe's most coveted defenders and his stock is bound to rise exponentially after the Champions League and World Cup. Rock-solid centre-back blessed with prodigious offensive skill. Has scored no less than three contenders for goal of the season in Germany. Loves to dribble out of the back before delivering a defense-splitting pass, yet almost never gets caught in possession.

Diego Placente
Argentinean international. 23 yrs.

Hard working, tactically astute former River Plate side-back who also holds an Italian passport. Adds yet another dimension to Leverkusen with his dazzling dribbling and razor-sharp short passing ability. Technically flawless but still not the finished product.

Zoltan Sebescen:
Germany B international. 26 yrs.

Inexhaustible Stuttgart-born side-back of part Hungarian and Serbian descent. Competent but unspectacular passer who is extremely strong in the tackle and domineering in the air. Also often used as an outside midfielder. Looks like a stretched-out Gennaro Gattuso.

Boris Zivkovic
Croatian international. 26 yrs.

Reliable defender who has mostly been used off the bench this season. Technically proficient but prone to the odd lapse in concentration.

Midfielders:

Michael Ballack
German international. 25 yrs.

Germany golden-boy who has really come of age this campaign. Used to be perceived as a big game-bottler but is now the man Bayer look to when the game is on the line. Complete midfielder capable of coming forward and tracking back with equally excellent ability. The Bayern-bound rising star is both his team's top-scorer and assist leader. Leverkusen's answer to Steven Gerrard.

Ze Roberto (full name Jose Roberto da Silva)
Brazilian international. 27 yrs.

Lightning-quick wing magician who has caught the attention of many top clubs but is most heavily being courted by Bayern. Intelligent reader of the game with plenty of wit to back up his mesmerizing trickery. In-recognizable from the player that flopped at Real Madrid. Truly a joy to behold.

Yilidiray Basturk
Turkish international. 23 yrs.

Yet another Bayer player who loves to run with the ball. Terrorizes defenders with his insatiable eagerness to take them on and his ability to leave them rooted with his blur-like little feet and acute turn-radius. A deadly passer when he is in a sharing mood but is often guilty of brazen selfishness.

Carsten Ramelow
German international. 28 yrs.

Physically imposing defensive midfielder who can also be deployed as a cente-back. Ferociously competitive yet at the same time level-headed. Capable bur reserved passer.

Bernd Schneider
German international. 29 yrs.

Pacey wing-man with a propensity for scoring spectacular goals. Genuinely two-footed and a superb crosser of the ball. Signed from Eintracht Frankfurt in 1999.

Jurica Vranjes
Croatian international. 22 yrs.

Brought in to fill the gaping hole left by Emerson's departure to Roma. Visionary midfielder with first-rate passing ability and timing in the tackle. Mostly used as a substitute but is most definitely one to watch for the future.

Attackers:

Oliver Neuville
German international. 28 yrs.

Diminutive, old fashioned winger who is equally effective as a centre-forward. Lightning quick with devastating crossing ability and an innate sense for goal.

Dimitar Berbatov
Bulgarian international. 21 years.

Tall and skilful former CSKA Sofia striker who has been in excellent form this season. Causes disarray in the opponent's defense with his intelligent and unpredictable off-the-ball movement. Usually used off the bench but is penciled in for the start on Wednesday.

Ulf Kirsten
German international. 36 yrs.

Wiley old veteran who doesn't much get involved in the buildup play but is as deadly as they come in the box. Not the tallest specimen but surprisingly adept in the air. Rarely gets the start anymore as his engine is nowhere near what is used to be. A model professional who always puts the team ahead of himself. A terrific option to be able to bring off the bench.

Thomas Brdaric
German international. 27 years.

Pacey forward with good one-on-one ability and outstanding off-the-ball movement. Has been lethal in front of goal of late but has a reputation as a wasteful finisher. Currently injured but should be back for the semifinal second-leg.

If judging from the writen above, Bayer should win the CL and German league without even breaking a sweat...
