He's staying:
Fergie
“Fabien came to me himself to say that agents had been phoning him saying that clubs were making a bid for him and that he was for sale. Agents have been telephoning him to say that Man United were selling him to such and such a club but that is absolute nonsense. That certainly didn’t come from us and I told him that. He is definitely happy at Old Trafford and he’s staying. We don’t want to sell him.”

Not sure whether to be happy or not about this - on balance unhappy unless this really was a rare bad year for him and next season he'll be on best behaviour.

Great. Now lets stop this blabbing about regarding new goalkeepers. We don't need them, we won't get them, lets get on with life please.

He's the best keeper in the world and he's a fans (well the match goers anyway) favourate so why would you not be happy, tell me Neil who you would prefer instead of him

At least two persons will be happy ;) . I've always suspected that agents, aware of his difficulties this season, were tryiyng to place their players in the biggest club in the world (with Real).
I'm sure he'll be back at his best next season .

Elizabeth, I owe you a message. I'll write you soon .(Fab looked sad at the training center yesterday)

:D :D :D

Give Barthez a solid, world-class back 4 (like he has with France) and he will dominate.

Gazza-Nesta-Thuram-Silvestre
(Blanc retired)
with Finnan-Brown-O'Shea-Phil as backup

I could see 30 EPL starts with 15-20 clean sheets.

Good luck and good form, Barthez.
The committment is a start.......to a great 2002/2003.

Good, now we can spend our money elsewhere...

...not that Roy would of done a bad job in goal...

Agree. We all wouldn't know how he will play next season -- either he will play like his first season which is absolutely brilliant, or he will play like his second season here which is absoultely a diaster. Now we can only pray that he finally put all his personal problems behind him and start to repay Fergie's faith on him next season.

Anyway you look at it, keeping Barthez is a huge gamble. Getting a replacement is obviously an issue but any repetition of last season's debacles and we'll end up empty handed again. I wonder how Jim Leighton feels about SAF's unwavering support for our eccentric keeper ?

Remember Peter Schmichael you could always look back over a season and say he won a few games for us on his own. Can you remember one game where
you thought Barthez has won us any points? He is an expensive show pony who
does very little to give confidence to the defence, Blanc can only be used
as cover and we need an organiser there with a modicum of speed.

As the years proved, getting someone else is an even bigger risk.

Does that mean Barthez is the most reliable keeper around and that anyone else who may be available is capable of the same catalogue of errors Barthez produced this season and therefore not worth the risk ? Better the devil you know....?

Any new goalkeeper is a new risk, remember Taibi? He wasn't a bad goalkeeper at all, but as things happen, he ended up as a disaster. No, I don't see any available goalkeepers better than Barthez, there are very few and those are not really available. Yes, he's made a few huge errors in the first half of the season but he was much better later on. Don't throw in Sorensen or Poom as options, they are not in his class.

That's not the major point though. My point is: goalkeeper is always the position with the lowest tolerance to mistake. You need someone who is absolutely reliable, stable and can give you confidence before your net. In this agrument Barthez performance in the first part of last season is simply unacceptable. Now it seems he will stay anyway, so we can only hope that a successful WC can help him regain his confidence back completely.

I was one of maybe the few who were dissapointed that we signed him and he has done nothing to remove the fears I had.
We are the biggest club and need one of the best between our sticks he certainly is not that, okay he is a great shotstopper but there are plenty of them about, we need someone to command between the sticks.
IMHO it's simple he has to go ..If he stays then I will back him to the hilt.
Why is it that some of you can not see the woods for the trees.Loyalty is one thing but you have to see when a player is not good enough for us.
Just think back to his horror shows last season he even contributed to Wes having a loss of confidence.
BE REALISTIC

Keano apart Barthez was most reds player of the year last season, yes he has had his fair share of cock ups this season but I can't think of any recentley which looking at it overall he just lost his form temprarily it happens to every player in the world, just when a keeper does it a few direct goals will be the outcome

Shaaa! Wasn't he named best goalkeeper in his first season in the prem?

I admire your loyalty seriously..Personally I don't think he has ever been that good ( only my opinion). The defence gets confidence from the keeper and vice versa..Maybe we have lacked a bit in both departments this season so my opinion is to strengthen both..Surely this is an obvious statement I am making............
