'tis a silly place
Fab quoted in l'Equipe:

"My future is clear: I want to stay with United and continue with the french team."

:D Than that's settled, we're not signing Given, Poom, Landreau or whoever people were advocating to sign. <img src="graemlins/yawn.gif" border="0" alt="[Yawn]" />

The key word being 'want'. Alex Ferguson won't necessarily want him to stay. Bosnich wanted to stay and look what happened to him.

Yep. Fergie's supported him (comapred with dropping Bosnich a few times) during his bad period. I'm sure he'll throw him to the dogs now.

Why would SAF drop Barthez after backing him throughout 2001/02 ? Latest from the Barthez camp is United have been as supportive as ever, according to Sky:

Barthez: "I intend to go to the end of my contract and that is 2006,"

"I have dropped a few clangers with United this season, but nobody has held it against me. They want you to feel good even when nothing is wrong. They keep asking me: 'Fabien, is there anything you need?'

"With Sir Alex Ferguson, the bond of confidence that must exist between a goalkeeper and his manager has grown stronger.

"I can build nothing with someone who does not have faith. My manager at Monaco told me one day he no longer trusted me. I left the club as soon as I could."

:D

Im sure I heard it mentioned during the France game earlier that he had extended his initial contract and would retire after it expires in 2006?

I could be wrong.

No, the initial contract went to 2006, it has not been extended. It's too soon for him to know what he's going to do after 2006.

No. Sir Alex has said himself that Fab would stay.

Barthez looks a much more accomplished performer when he plays for France. Because he has one of the best defences in the World in front of him. :)

Actually those quotes come from two interviews given yesterday and today to French sports daily "L'Equipe". It's a shame they haven't translated the full interviews, they're very interesting.

May be he feels more confident. Because even if the defence is great in front of him (but not today), he has made some of his better games and saves with France.
