Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez is understood to be at the centre
of a police investigation following an incident during his side's 1-0 defeat by
Leeds at Elland Road.
A complaint is believed to have been made against Barthez after he reacted
angrily to Leeds scoring what proved to be the winner in the 66th minute from
Harry Kewell.
The 31-year-old France international apparently picked up his plastic drinks
bottle lying in the goalmouth and kicked it through the net, where it hit a
disabled supporter.
The fracas has been referred to West Yorkshire police, with a spokeswoman
stating: ``We have been made aware of an incident and we will be
investigating.''
While the return of Rio Ferdinand forced the police to heighten security above
and beyond their normal procedures for a category A match, that did not stop
trouble flaring.
Eleven arrests were made as fighting broke out on a number of occasions
between the rivals sets of supporters, resulting in injuries to two police
officers.
``Sporadic outbreaks of disorder before and after the match were dealt with by
the police,'' confirmed the spokeswoman, who added: ``Two police officers were
injured and required medical attention.''
It is also understood one of the Manchester United supporters' buses was
damaged, with reports the team bus was vandalised proving unfounded.

He kicked a plastic bottle through a net? And now there's a police investigation? What a joke.

If thats what happened nothing will come of it he obviously did not think it would go through the back of the net

He should have let Forlan do it. ;)

From PA: We have sent a corrected version on the Barthez story making it clear the
spectator was not disabled.

I'm sure it was unintentional. Careless nevertheless.

We'll be left with just the kids at this rate, I tell ya...

;)

Maybe the police should be investigating why Fabian again showed his inability to communicate with defenders ie the incident where he came rushing out to punch the ball even though Rio was clearing, this incident brings horrible memories of his clangers against Depotivo last year.

Why did we buy another keeper, after Fabian's weak attempt at stopping the Bolton goal, surely now was the time to give the new boy a start.

It seems like a storm in a teacup - I expect it was an accident as Barthez kicking had been shit all afternoon ;)

I agree and I hope he'll go through with a fine and some excuses. At least it proves he cares.

We'll see if a bottle thrown by frustration without intention of damaging anybody (although he should control his nerves) is more serious for the police than attacking an Asian boy !

Oooh Liz. Naughty.

What a load of bollocks! Fab threw it behind him off the pitch and wasn't even looking where he threw it. The West Yorks. police must be at a loose end to investigate this but there's no surprise to the depths people descend when we're involved.

Wouldn't they be better occupied in investigating who threw it on pitch in the first place or is that too much to ask? Nah, they'll claim they are overworked and underpaid again. Wankers!

In todays rag it says "the fan in question is said to be appalled by the behaviour of Barthez and is adamant that he wants action taken against him".
So now we have to put up with some already pug ugly sheep(4 stitches just below the eye) selling his story to all and sundry in the tabs all week

i really could not give a flying feck about this idiot i hope it hurt a whole lot.

But plastic right?

And presumbly not full?

Must have hurt.

he probably got one of his BNP mates to bottle him then blamed it all on Barthez, after all, whose gonna defend a filthy frog in Leeds?
waannnkkkerrrssss  pass me the arsenic?

Which report are you talking about? First, he was supposed to have kicked it, Second it was thrown at him. Whichever, if you had seen the television pictures he kicked the ball, picked up the bottle facing forwards and threw it behind him with a backwards movement of his arm. He didn't turn round until he had thrown it. How the feck can this be intentional? Preusmably, it was plastic. How the feck did this guy need 4 stitches?

Same point, how are W. Yorks Police justifying their involvement in the above light?

the wanker who chucked the bottle on to the pitch should be jailed himself, why must mindless pricks like him and the ones a few weeks ago at chelsea Vs scummers, insist on throwing objects at the players on the pitch? why? because they are fcuking wankers....

This guy probably wants money. May be he has made the stiches himself !

You are all going over the top here...I feel for the guy with 4 stitches in his face.

It was hardly the injured guys fault was it?...so lay off him.

I am sure it was an accident but we live in a compensation society these days and I am sure the buy in question is being advised to claim.

You're right. Fab should sue the supporter for trying to make him look bad.

;)

Depends on how it pans out whether or not we're going over the top.

If it was a deliberate attempt by Barthez to injure a fan, we are.

If not, we aren't.

I've just seen the incident on Sky Sports. The bottle was thrown into the six-yard box after the goal, possibley aimed at Fab (who knows). Barthez simply picked it up, and with out really looking threw it behind him.

Absolutely no malice in it at all. Foreign objects are always removed from the pitch, it's just unfortunate Fab wasn't more careful where he was throwing it.

A slap on the wrist and a 'more careful in future' is all thats needed here.

IF the bottle was thrown by a fan he will be found and banned for life under LUFC policy.....the fan hit by the bottle deserves more sympathy than you lot are giving him.

Barthez was wrong to throw it back into the crowd in just the same was as that tosser Carragher was in throwing the coin into the Arsenal fans.

You obviously havn't seen it! There was no attempt by Barthez in the position he was to throw it at anybody. My question is how your police in their 'discretion' can see it as possibly worth taking seriously! It's instances such as this that show colours. You are left with the distinct possibility that it is done on purpose as part of the 'great game' of having a go! Well if thats the case people should not be surprised when home truths are given back!

It was reported here that Barthez kicked the ball into his own net & it flew through the gap!

If only he cud prevent the ball from hitting the net as well! :(

It didn't go anywhere near the net. He picked it up, and threw it, supposidly to the touchline. Obviously, he threw it a little too hard.

Fair enough, its shit for the poor sheep. But I hardly think it was intentional.

Its the fans fault, but you can bet there will be no consistancy, and he will get off, because he plays for the mancs.

If the FA was fair, it would be the same as the ban on Carragher...

That incident was with intent. If you've seen this one, you'll realise there was absolultely no malice in Fab's actions.

Here lies the problem, he's not showing any hunger, be it trying to save a ball or skull a sheep. I'm dissapointed ;)

It was not the fault of the fan who got hit but some other loony who will be banned for life when found.

The difference with the Carragher incident was that he looked where he was throwing it an appeared to aim ....Barthez just threw it backwards - with only Leeds fans behind the goal he was sure to hit one though so he does deserve some punishment although not on the sacle of Carragher.

Growler...you are a biased scouser.
