UNITED GOALKEEPER QUIZZED BY POLICE

Friday October 18 2002

Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez was questioned by police investigating an alleged incident in which he threw or kicked a bottle  which hit a Leeds United fan, the club confirmed today.

The alleged incident took place at Leeds United's Elland Road ground on September 14 during a match which was already under intense scrutiny due to the return of England defender Rio Ferdinand after his £30 million move between the two clubs.

Leeds United fan Colin Richmond is suing Barthez over the incident in which he claims he was hit in the face by the plastic water bottle as he watched the game in the disabled supporters section.

Barthez was interviewed at a police station in Leeds yesterday.

West Yorkshire Police said: ``We can confirm a 31-year-old man attended a Leeds police station yesterday where he was arrested and interviewed in connection with an allegation of an assault on a man on September 14 at Leeds United Football Ground.

``He has been bailed pending further inquiries.''

A spokeswoman for Manchester United said: ``We can confirm that Fabien Barthez has been questioned as part of an ongoing investigation and it is in the hands of the police.'

Okay boys and girls. How come we haven't been talking about this today? Maybe we should have put it in one of the Roy Keane threads :p .

A definate case of another player being taken to the cleaners.....bet the scum will be hoping to settle out of court for a large some of money

The charges will be dropped. What a ridiculous case.

What's happening over there these days, it gets more and more sue happy like the US all the time.

I can't believe I hear all the ambulance chaser ads on the radio.

Fab is very absent-minded and he had probably thrown the bottle without thinking about it and hadn't probably seen that it had crossed the net. This story is ridiculous. When I see the words "assault", "arrested"...

Fecking Sheep shaggers - they can give, but can't take.

I'll be impressed if they can prove he actually aimed to hit someone with the bottle. He was looking the other way and was just trying to throw it back in to the goals, where it normally is.
It's a fecking joke, you'd think Yorkshire police might have a bit more to worry about than assault with a deadly plastic water bottle

From the video pictures, it's difficult to see how there was any intent or maliciousness. There is no video evidence of any form of prima facie case. Its not possible that anything could be proved beyond reasonable doubt. A police investigation is stupid and childish but we've seen the Yorks police over Hillsborough! By all rights the action should go NFA (no further action)- In other words 'feck off yer pathetic, sheepshagging, scumbag!' but where we're involved there's no limit to the depths the wankers sink to!

There surely wasn't any intent. He didn't imagine the ball would reach a spectator, as he apparently threw it in his own net. He wasn't lucky that it did cross the net !

Still, the bottle was apparently half full and as he has a lot of force in his hands (just look at his clearances with the hand, they're impressive), the man has surely suffered from bruises, and he was in the disabled section.

So the man's action is understandable, what is ridiculous is the way the press talks about it and the words used by the police.

I don't know what he was thinking..

To throw a bottle at anyone is bad enough, but to pick out a disabled fan it well out of order!!

Not if he's a Leeds fan.
