Bartez or Schmeichel for one season?

Was having a chat with a blue mate last night, and he put this question to me, would you prefer Schmeichel for one season back at OT to retire on, after all it's his spiritual home. Or would you like to keep Bartez between the sticks for one more season. Had me thinking, thought I'd put it to the forum.

So has Schmeichel still got what it takes, would he still be good enough for us to bow out on, or is he past it and I'd stick with Bartez?

As some mucky scouse cow says on blind date, 'The choice is yours'

The Dane. He's much more of a leader on the pitch and would be a fantastic compliment to Blanc and Rio. Barthez has more physical ability due to the age different, but Schmeichel would be a much more imposing figure between the sticks if still playing for us.

The Big Dane of course

He's more of an organiser of the defence than Barthez...

Our shitty defence was partly due to Barthez's lack of commanding (although the defenders should also be the ones that does the job)

Schmikes would shout at the back four all the time which would keep Neville and Mickey awake in the match ;)

Common guys! Barthez is the best keeper in town, Peter is gettin' old and there's no point in talking about it...

It was an interesting discussion last night down the boozer, and this is a discussion forum, so why not talk about it. Of course it's never going to happen, but it's certainly food for thought. I for one would like to see the Big Dane back with us for last assault on Europe, before he hangs up his gloves, shame it ain't gonna happen :(

Pete's been in pub league mode for the past three years. He's be up for any challenge if he was still with us.

Fab....
Pete's past it.

so you didn't see bart play last yr then ;)

maybe...but there's no guarantee that he'll be back to anywhere near 'his' standards.. the fact is, he looked a pale shadow of his United best last season..which was one of the main reason's why Villa let him go.... so if he ain't good enough for Villa, he.............. TBH iam glad he retired from United at the top... he's a legend... pity he's fecked off to City :o

as for Fab, he's still a class keeper, iam sure he and the rest of the team will be back to their best this season....

....we don't go trophyless two seasons in a row ;)

Schmeichel left United on the highest level possible, lets just leave it at that

Fabians a clown! the board should ring mcdonalds and ask them if they need a new ronald!

Agreed. Schmikes was the greatest at his time, but it's not his time anymore...

I don't think I've ever seen a better goalkeeper than Peter Schmeichel, but he's past it. He started well for Villa last season but made schoolboy error after error after the first couple of months. He left Old Trafford at the just the right time - when he was still a huge hero.

In the nicest way possible; Schmikes has had his time - and he served us well :)

Barthez is our keeper now.

Yep, Schmikes would be good for a bit of nostalgia (heck why not get Steve Bruce and Pally back too, who needs Rio, what's he won - yeah, I'm being ironic) but remember, Schmikes left coz he couldn't physically hack the intensity any more, and he's hardly going to be able to now, 3 years older.

Fab's got a lot to prove this season, he's a champion - it'd be mad to bet against him.

I thought Schmeichel left because of all the attention from the commercial side of the club. ie All the interviews for MUTV, media attention, basically living under a microscope 24/7.

Or am I totally wrong?

(wouldn't be the first time  )

I recall Him saying it was the physical demands which led him to quit. I think he always had problems with a bad back and playing 50 + games a season became to much. Its interesting that he didn,t exactly set Sporting Lisbon alight and as some posters have noted Villa didn,t exactly fight to keep him.

You're 'totally wrong' Hornchurch. It was Physical, he said he couldn't hack the Prem. Despite coming back a year later ;)

FAB, I Love Pete, but I want to remember him as he was. He's Still the Greatest GoalKeeper ever to grace the pitch,.. but now we have the second best.

( but why CITY for Pete's sake!!!!! ) ah maybe Pete will let a few in for us in the derby.

Has to be barthez admittedly he had a poor season last year though was not helped by the defensive problems. On his day he is with out doubt the best in the world and is capable of producing saves that no else playing today can. Schmeichel was the best the world has ever seen though as much as I hate to say it he is past it. He should have quit football totally after leaving United and he was only ever going to go downhill. Still I for one will never forget what he did for the club and assume that his signing for city arises through the number of blows to the head he got or just meant that it would be easier for him to watch United in Europe.

Fab. Pete was excellent when he was here, and he'll always be a United legend. But Fab's our keeper now, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Barthez.

He never even considered playing for the Massives. Like the rest of us.

Peter Schmeichel is the best!
No Doubt!

Pete is not even top ten now.
