Barnes boys set for move to top flight with Manchester United
Stockport County youngsters Sam and Louis Barnes could be set for a move to Premier League giants Manchester United.
The twin brothers, 18, are currently on trial at Old Trafford and were both named in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI for United reserves’ 2-0 win over Altrincham last week.
Centre-half Sam, pictured above, was linked with a move to United, as well Premier League rivals Bolton Wanderers, last season after impressing Solskjaer during a reserve game.
After the game, Solskjaer said he would be handing first team boss Sir Alex Ferguson a glowing report about the youngster.
"He’s strong, reads the game well and has good pace," said Solskjaer.
"I’ll be recommending him to the gaffer."
Barnes, who was on Liverpool’s books as a schoolboy, broke into County’s first team in April and impressed during a 2-0 defeat at Leyton Orient only to lose his place after a 6-0 mauling by Huddersfield Town at Edgeley Park.
He made 22 appearances for Craig Madden’s youth team last season and captained the side to the Youth Alliance Cup final against Queens Park Rangers in May.
The team also included brother Louis, a left-back, as the Hatters narrowly lost out 4-3.
Stockport County refused to comment on whether Sam or Louis Barnes are still under contract at the club or whether they expect to receive compensation if a deal is agreed.
Under Premier League rules, United should be liable for compensation, whether the pair are under contract or not, because they are currently under 24-years-old.
