Guardiola Makes Squad Plans

With Josep Guardiola looking increasingly likely to replace Frank Rijkaard as Barcelona coach, reports in the Catalan press suggest that he has already drawn up a list of players that he would like to dispose of ahead of next season.

With Rijkaard surely on the way out after a second consecutive season without a trophy, it seems that Barcelona president Joan Laporta is ready to give the opportunity to current B team coach Josep Guardiola to take over the first team for next season.

Guardiola's thoughts are currently occupied by insuring that the B team clinch promotion to the Segunda Division B, but Catalan daily 'Sport' suggests that he is already clear as to which players he will and will not count on when he does take over the first team.

Valdés, Milito, Márquez, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Zambrotta, Sylvinho, Messi, Abidal, Bojan, Eto’o and Deco are the players that the report indicates Guardiola will keep hold of, although he will want to have an in-depth talk with Eto'o and Deco to determine their commitment to the cause.

In addition to those current squad members, Guardiola will also promote youngsters Víctor Sánchez, Abraham, Jeffren and Pedrito to the senior squad, with Thiago and Gai likely to have to wait another year before joining them in the first team.

On the other side of things, Guardiola has identified eleven players that he would like to see depart, namely: Gudjohnsen, Ronaldinho, Pinto, Henry, Edmílson, Giovani, Ezquerro, Thuram, Oleguer, Touré and Jorquera.

Guardiola is keen to bring his current coaching staff from the B team into the first team, with his assistant Tito Vilanova, goalkeeping coach Carlos Busquets and physical preparation specialist Altimira all set to be promoted, along with Emili Ricart, Francesc Cos and Jaume Langa.

Current first team assistant Johan Neeskens will depart, as could coaches Eusebio and Unzué.

Barca fans haven't really rated toure all that highly this year, I think he is good but i guess thats spanish football for you.

Bullshit. Guardiola won't be an idiot and let Toure go, he is one their most important players. They just need a good replacement for him (Edmilson has been injured most of the last two seasons) and they are apparently looking at Sevilla's Poulsen and Keita.

:lol::lol::lol: they want to keep Valdes and Marquez....

Marquez is quite a decent centre half and he can provide cover in midfield if required so he got his uses. Can be a dirty player though, Valdes on the other hand is extremely overrated. Dont know how Barca havent realised this either and brought in a top quality keeper

marquez is good but a filthy player, whereas valdes in a liability even though he does have his moments.

I just don't get why Barca doesn't see it.... Valdes is probably the worst GK of any teams in the top flight (La Liga/Serie A/Prem).

As for Marquez... he is such a cnut

Some of this article will turn out to be true, just from the sort of reasonable guesswork any one of us could write about any well-known club.

What it is not, is news.

It's going to be a long summer.

Valdes really is pretty shite, they could even get someone like Robert Green who would do a better job than him.

And as for toure being axed? :wenger:

Agreed. That has shocked me. If I was Wenger I would pounce....

Funnily enough he was on trial with us and Kolo practically was going public saying how we should sign him and how he was a better player than him. Probably would of got him for under £1mill, dunno why Wenger didn't buy him tbh....

He would probably cost around £10mill and I'd much rather see us go for Toulalan for that kind of money.

Toure's been their best player this season along with Iniesta and Messi. I highly doubt they'll get rid of him.

They really dont need him, but I thought I should point out that Fabregas' idol growing up in Spain was Guardiola. Would only make a trip back to Spain all the more appealing.

He can say whatever he wants. If they are gonna get rid of any players you have to add a replacement first. I highly doubt they will get replacements for 15 or 11 players. All those players that are not gonna be replaced will stay at Barca and probably will sit on bench the whole season or at least until the next january transfer window.

Apparently Yaya Toure turned you guys down and I agree that from what I have seen anyway that Toulalan would be a better buy for that type of money.

you said it.

Spanish fans love the fantasy type players, and don't really seem to appreciate players who go quietly but effectively about their business.

any fool could see that the reason we had trouble building counter-attacks at the Camp Nou was because of Toure.

anyway, their loss is another team's gain.

Yaya Toure was very good in the last World Cup too. It's taken time for some of the bigger clubs to notice him.

Gotta admit at that time, I fancied him at United.

Personally I have no doubts Toure is the superior player. Beside,s Toulalan would never go for a price as cheap as that. You know Lyon....

Exactly. Especially when you consider Guardiola played pretty much exactly the same role as Toure.

Defensively I certainly wouldn't rate him higher than Toulalan but he is bigger stronger and maybe a better play maker than him.

This stories already proven untrue, it's been around internet a while too. The same paper came out with a report contradicing this story which said Guardiola had earmarked a few players including Toure to definitely stay. The only thing a top club could take from Barca in the off season is an over priced Ronaldinho.

That is the main reason why I actually rate him. He is Vieira in the making. I firmly believe if Wenger got his hands on him he would evlolve unto Vieira himself. Toulalan is also class though

Thing with Vieira was he was proper box to box, he would bring the ball out of the clouds just outside our box, flick over some dick's head and gallop down the pitch. Yaya is much more of a player who likes to dictate things from deep, he likes to stay deep, see everything infront of him and pass the ball about. Not trying to sound funny here but not like the usual African pace and power player that most people associate with African players, he is a lot smarter than people give him credit for and quite an intelligent player in that respect. Kind of like Carrick where he can break up play and dictate but I wouldn't trust Carrick to mark Kaka out of a game hence why Fergie spent big on Hargreaves and I wouldn't trust Yaya either hence why I think we need someone defensively more stronger.

This current Wenger team needs midfielders who are not static but always mobile and creating angles for each other and Yaya doesn't fit that decription at all. I reckon he would be top drawer in Italy though, reckon Juve should have a look at him.

I can't imagine anyone keeping Valdes for playing reasons.

I don't know... Barca's midfield of Xavi/Iniesta/Toure was/is extremely mobile.

?I know what you mean. I agree. The thing is though he is till mouldable. When playing for Ivory Coast I've seen signs of hi being able to bust forward and join the attack well. That is why I feel if Wenger, a master moulder got his hands on him he would become like Vieira. But as of now I agree Toulalan is what you need more, to cover Fabregas.

The thing is Toure is more mobile than most realise. He is no Carrick. This year in all honesty has been rather bad for him IMO. But last year he was the main hub of Barca's center midfield with Iniesta in terms of movement & energy. And last year he proved in terms of rapid, give and go passing, his the best I've since amongst holding players. I believe he would be great anywhere. I agree Juve should buy him. Their mdfield needs rebuilding.

The chances of chelsea selling him are non! unless he requests a transfer but cech seems a very decent guy and I'm sure he'll serve out his contract.
Going from Chelsea to Barca is hardly a good career move at the moment.
