Guardiola Makes Squad Plans
With Josep Guardiola looking increasingly likely to replace Frank Rijkaard as Barcelona coach, reports in the Catalan press suggest that he has already drawn up a list of players that he would like to dispose of ahead of next season.
With Rijkaard surely on the way out after a second consecutive season without a trophy, it seems that Barcelona president Joan Laporta is ready to give the opportunity to current B team coach Josep Guardiola to take over the first team for next season.
Guardiola's thoughts are currently occupied by insuring that the B team clinch promotion to the Segunda Division B, but Catalan daily 'Sport' suggests that he is already clear as to which players he will and will not count on when he does take over the first team.
Valdés, Milito, Márquez, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Zambrotta, Sylvinho, Messi, Abidal, Bojan, Eto’o and Deco are the players that the report indicates Guardiola will keep hold of, although he will want to have an in-depth talk with Eto'o and Deco to determine their commitment to the cause.
In addition to those current squad members, Guardiola will also promote youngsters Víctor Sánchez, Abraham, Jeffren and Pedrito to the senior squad, with Thiago and Gai likely to have to wait another year before joining them in the first team.
On the other side of things, Guardiola has identified eleven players that he would like to see depart, namely: Gudjohnsen, Ronaldinho, Pinto, Henry, Edmílson, Giovani, Ezquerro, Thuram, Oleguer, Touré and Jorquera.
Guardiola is keen to bring his current coaching staff from the B team into the first team, with his assistant Tito Vilanova, goalkeeping coach Carlos Busquets and physical preparation specialist Altimira all set to be promoted, along with Emili Ricart, Francesc Cos and Jaume Langa.
Current first team assistant Johan Neeskens will depart, as could coaches Eusebio and Unzué.
