Barcelona and Nike agree record €1.7 Billion deal

They've been sponsored by Nike for nearly 30 years I think. Was the last season they weren't when Ronaldo Fenomeno was there?

Smart move for Nike. Yamal Barcelona shirt will probably be the most lucrative/best selling shirt in football for a long time

€127m each year? Yeah doesn’t sound fishy at all.
How so? United make around €110m. And the new Barca deal runs 14 years. Accounting for inflation, once the deal is around halfway through, United’s new deal will probably make the same or more.

Not that it makes much difference, but I think they lost him to Adidas for boots recently.

It isn't. They're still their top seller by a lot, it's natural they'd get this type of deal. None of the other nike clubs come particularly close. For a comparison, Real Madrid get even more than that from adidas - 130M euros per year

€127m a year.. good lord. All the ref's can be buy. Even the ones with expensive habits like Coote. Mind you, with inflation the way it is, in 14 years that would barely buy Oliver for a weekend.

We are still getting €110m? Even without UCL?

This isn’t some extraordinary number - it’s the biggest deal ever because it’s so long
This is the thing, and if we take into account inflation its actually looking worse. In real terms, year on year of the deal - assuming 5% inflation (which in football is probably generously low), the value drops like this:
Year - 2024 value equivalent
1 - 127,000k€
2 - 120,952k€
3 - 115,193k€
4 - 109,707k€
5 - 104,483k€
6 - 99,508k€
7 - 94,769k€
8 - 90,257k€
9 - 85,959k€
10 - 81,865k€
11 - 77,967k€
12 - 74,254k€
13 - 70,718k€
14 - 67,351k€

Very much selling out the future benefits upfront, which is good for now but in later years it will come back to bite them potentially. Still big numbers mind.

That's not actually a good deal for them. In ten years, Nike will be laughing at the price of that sponsorship.

Mortgaging the future again, sounds like they've dropped their pants to get the signing fee up front and alleviate current financial pressure. If they win the league and do well in the Champions League this season then they should reasonably be expecting more than Real next, which they won't be and nor will they for 14 years.
