I am finding that the banners at the bottom of the page are making my computer run slowly. If the banner isn't in view the page scrolls no problem but as soon as the banner appears, everything slows down.

Since the banner also shows when you post on the quick reply box, this makes typing in a reply a slow process, there being a delay between typing & the text showing on the screen.

Never used to be like this, it has only started happening in the last few days.

Any ideas?

Get yourselves a decent browser and block the images, problem solved.

How old's your computer? I adblock too, but most fairly modern computers should be able to handle ad banners, unless there are some shoddily made banners being served.

Ideally I'd recommend you just download Firefox or Chrome and just use them along with a free AdBlock extension/plugin (tried and tested by many, sure to work), but if you want to keep using IE8 you could maybe try something like Simple Adblock for Internet Explorer, works with IE6, IE7 and IE8 or Ad Blocker: Ad Muncher.

Personally I don't have a problem keeping IE8 although many prefer others, especially Firefox & Chrome. I just need to be sure I'm not downloading a load of other problems e.g. something which will slow down the system overall.

I use opera. I don't even need to setup adblock. It's already setup by default :D

IE8 really isn't so bad, although I haven't used it all that much it's a major improvement over IE6, so if IE8 works well for you then that's fair enough really! I wouldn't be able to give you any advice on adblocking software for IE though, since I only use it for testing my own websites (none of which contain ads), so your best bet might be to download an adblocking extension to try it out. If it works out well for you, your problem's solved, if not, just uninstall it and try out another one.

After reading a bit it seems AdMuncher is a popular one for IE8, but some have reported it can slow browsing down. I'd give it a test drive if I were you, you can always ditch it if you're not happy.

Just refreshed this page a bunch of times in IE8 with no adblock, and while I didn't see any BT Sky banner, I did get an autoplaying video ad in the right hand side of the opening post a few times. That's surely not going to help - are you guys who are having problems seeing this?

I usually don't like to advocate adblocking software too strongly, since I know some sites depend on it, but autoplaying video ads with audio is just a step too far! It's not RedCafe's fault, I just can't see why any company would choose this way to advertise - all it makes me do is hit the back button. I'm gonna stop buying E45 cream completely out of spite!

Me too. Has only been the past few days. Must be some problem with the banners themselves I think.

Same here, only the past few days or so.

Seems to be the BT Sky one.

This seems to be the main culprite, other banners seem to be less of a problem.

I thought you only got that if you are not logged in as a member?

Anyway, I'll see how it goes & maybe test drive some of the options. Although, seeing as it is mostly the Sky one, can't they be contacted and told that their banner is screwing up the forum?

 fair play, I never bothered to log in when I was testing on IE8. I've probably been auto logged in to the caf with ad blocking software for almost 4 years now, I've forgotten what that other world is like! The boycott on E45 cream still stands, though, at least for as I can hold out.

Id have thought there would be a way of excluding particular ads from showing up on the site, but we'd probably need an admin to confirm or deny that. It'd be a nicer solution for the site than making those who put up with ads take a hit on performance.
