Limp Bizkit - first album, decent stuff. Not a commercial album. Nothing to special really but a good, raw sound, edgy, quite fun, a lot of screaming, you could hear that the band is new and developing. Before I even knew how much Fred Durst is going to suck the whole band turned to commercialism which again is a good thing if you wanna make money but a bad thing because you are losing your original sound and becoming a philosophical dickhead with an important message.

Any more examples?

Well if you liked Limp Bizkit, I would say Korn as well, who were a similar band. Used to be cool, especially the first three albums, perhaps the 4th as well.

Shit now.

Agreed.

Another one is Helmet. First three albums recorded in the early 90s are very good. The rest, and especially the 2004 album is awful. Some bands just lose it.

Metallica without a shadow of doubt.

Up to the black album, they were simply awesome, the best band in the world.

After? Shite

Green Day - Their last album (American Idiot) is a pathetic attempt at a rock opera. They should of stuck to 3 minute pop-punk songs, that were actually pretty good.

The question could be asked are there any bands at all which consistently produce good music?!

System of a down - cracking first album, decent second, shite third. Made up for it a bit with their last two

Silverchair - bloody amazing band when they first came out. Raw, energetic, angry for no particular reason - everything you want from a rock band. Then the singer stopped eating, married some bint from neighbours and now wanks into a microphone and calls it art.

The Offspring - didn't so much go downhill as make the same album umpteen times.

Garbage - sounded really different when they first came out, now they sound a bit bland and repetitive. I'd still pork whatsherface that sings though.

The Offspring is a good shout; they had some decent pop-punk tunes initially.

Stereophonics. 'Word gets around' was a good debut and 'Performance and Coctails' a decent follow up. Everything they've done since then has been pretty shit.

Uhh yeah, there's quite a few. All the bands listed in this thread are bands that started off good with a fresh sound then ruined it by becoming sell outs then making boring over produced lazily written music. Metallica and Green Day being good examples of this. Tool for example started to make even more bizaare music after they got famous and have improved steadily since Aenima, although it's hard to choose between their last two albums as they're both incredible. Trent Reznor also comes to mind but his music has been slowly degrading.

oh and to answer the original question....

U2 and Red Hot Chilli Peppers

the thing with the peppers is after BSSM, their albums have 1 or 2 awesome songs, and about 8 others that are absolute filler. especially on stadium arcadium, where half that shit could have been on any other middle-of-the-road rock band album, and only a few songs, eg. readymade, could have only been done by them.

Queens of the Stone Age and Muse have been consistently good, and as for bands that are in decline: audioslave were in a freefall until they split

Don't think SOAD qualifies for the band that now suck though considering Hypnotize and Mesmerize are great albums. Agree that Steal This Albim kinda suck though. The only song I like off that album was Boom. The first 2 albums were excellent.
