Ballack doubt for United return tie(TeamTalk)

Bayer Leverkusen could be without star player Michael Ballack for the Champions League semi-final second leg against Manchester United.
Ballack was instrumental for Leverkusen in last week's first leg at Old Trafford, scoring their first equaliser in the 2-2 draw, but could miss the second leg after picking up an injury yesterday.

Ballack's injury capped a disastrous weekend for Leverkusen, as they were beaten 1-0 by lowly FC Nuremberg. The defeat knocks Bayer off the top of the Bundesliga table after they had looked certain to clinch this season's title.

Leverkusen have been hammered in the German press this weekend as Saturday's result brought back painful memories of two seasons ago when they blew a three-point lead at the top on the final day of the season to hand the title to Bayern Munich. Dortmund now top the Bundesliga, a point ahead of Leverkusen, with Bayern just a point behind.

Ballack managed to complete yesterday's game, but was way below par, and was rushed to hospital immediately afterwards for X-rays.

Bayer have several injury worries ahead of the crunch Champions League clash, as both Oliver Neuville and Jens Nowotny were forced to struggle through the game whilst carrying injuries.

He is a great player and will help us if he is missing. What do you all think?

He scores goals for them like Becks does for us. Don't think it will change too much though, as I expect them to come out in a complete defensive posture.

ballack scores more than beckham, raoul .. ballack´s scored 25 or so far this season

ballack is a very important player for them. he holds everything together.

Ballack runs BAYER and he ran the game at OT, if he is out for them it is a great bonus for us however KEANO didn't have much of a say at OT somthing else that will change in germany.

Ballack doubtful for United return leg

Sunday 28th April 2002

Bayer Leverkusen star Michael Ballack could miss the Champions' League semi-final second leg against Manchester United after injuring his right ankle against FC Nuremberg.

"I can't say what hurts more, our defeat or the pain of the injury," said the 25-year-old.

Leverkusen were knocked off top spot by Borussia Dortmund after losing 2-1, but the damage for Bayer could be greater still should Ballack miss Tuesday's match at the BayArena.

The Germany midfielder was taken to hospital for X-rays after being hacked down by Nuremberg's Tomasz Kos. He played the full 90 minutes, but needed treatment and was clearly suffering during a below-par second period.

Bayer managing director Reiner Calmund blamed the defeat on fatigue, coupled with a worrying injury-list.

"Although we were deadly tired, we went out to attack during the second half, but luck was not on our side," he said. "We had some fine chances, but even the post was against us.

"I am very sad and disappointed about this bitter defeat, especially for our fans and the team who have had such a great season. We were not fresh enough after so many games over the past few months, but still we kept on trying."

Germany striker Oliver Neuville had to come off the bench for the second half despite a broken toe as Leverkusen pressed for an equaliser.

And captain Jens Nowotny, who has been playing with ankle and groin injuries in recent few weeks, needed a pain-killing injection to get through the match.

"Nowotny should be able to finish the season, but he will definitely need a break after that to be fit for the World Cup," said Germany national-team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt.

Ballack scored Leverkusen's opener in the 2-2 draw with United in the first leg of their semi-final at Old Trafford last Wednesday.

It would be a massive loss for Bayer because Ballack is in super form this season. He scored more goals this season than in the last 5 years together.
But I think he will be find out very soon. 80% of his goals are the same( Running in the middle of the box) Defenders will learn it very soon and he won´t score half the goals next season. He also always had a reputation for being shit in big games in Germany.
I´ve been watching him week in week out for years and IMO he is not a worldclass player. He just has an outstanding season.

Yeah... maybe... but I guess there's always made a BIG story out of something, that in the end shows to be almost nothing....

kim milton nielsen is tuesday´s referee ...

aaaah shit, there are few refs i hate more than this twat

I think he's a fairly decent ref tbh, France '98 notwithstanding, he seems to be a calm, level headed type which is important imo coz I think there'll be some German thespian delights on offer that night; hopefully, he'll see right through them though.

hes a feckin lanky cnut.i can see him giving keane or butt a yellow for an inocuous challenge instead of using common sense.

Though it DOES play a role whom is fit and whom isn't, we cannot afford to focus on anything but ourselves. We will have to beat the best to achieve anything this season, no matter if it is in the Champions or Premier League.

So, it is in THIS regard uninteresting if he plays or not. We will beat anybody. Period.

even if he comes back, he wont be 100%. i'm also glad for neuville and the defender

I watched the match btwn Nurnburg and Lever on FSW today and Ballack didn't look to that seriously injured.

Might be an attempt to throw MU off on any kind of strategy that may have been planned against him.

Holy F*@k! What the hell is this above ...

Jedi??????????? Germans with gifts????????

So this is what I've been missing....
jeezzz I'm going to crawl back into my hole.

I would be utterly gobsmacked if he didn't play tomorrow! It's a bullshit story, probably just a knock he picked up, nothing serious at all.

How many times have United pulled stuff like this, saying so and so is struggling only to be in the team fighting fit at kick-off.

Ballack will be fit tomorrow, mark my words. But if not, it's a huge boost for us because he is their Keane.
