Greatness ...... well about 10 games from it actua
With UTD bringing RIO in (or so it seems ATM) leeds are making a bid to get AYALA the player who many on here including me wanted to see at OT.

<a href="http://www.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=99867&clid=&cpid=&Title=Leeds+eyeing+Rio+replacement%3F" target="_blank">Leeds & AYALA</a>

what do people think now ???

personally i think that rio is NOT enough i think we needed to bring in an extra CB last summer and we did (blanc) but then 1 left (stam) and now johnsen has left too.
I think we should go for AYALA as well, he and rio could make a fantastic patnership. this would mean BLANC could stay on as a replacement with brown and o'shay brewing and maturing without constant top level pressure.

?????

I think we should focus on wrapping up the Rio deal and then wait and see what happens next. Fergie has made it clear that he thinks Larry is ready for another year, so I wouldn't expect another CB signing until next year. We'll probably see a replacement for Irwin IMO.

It has just been on the main TV news here that Ayala's agent is in Leeds and talking about an Ayala transfer right now!

Looks good!

No that's an idea I like. <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

I think we should go for both of them as well. It might take a hell of a lot of money, but it will set our backline up for years to come.

And it'll p!ss of Leeds even more! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

The "Irwin replacement" seems to be even more of a guessing game than the centre-half position.

The plot thickens - a post from leedschat...

cmac34 - Alaya's agent has just arrived in england saying "we have no scheduled meeting, but would like to talk to leeds if ferdinand goes" what a coincidence.........

Just to confirm, from The Guardian:
Roberto Ayala's agent says he is ready to open talks with Leeds should the Elland Road club have a change of heart and allow Rio Ferdinand to leave.
The Valencia defender - a target for Manchester United before they turned their attentions to Ferdinand - could be a ready-made replacement for the Leeds captain, who today had a transfer request turned down.

Agent Fernando Hidalgo jetted into England today and although he insists there is no meeting planned, he admits that could change should Ferdinand quit the club.

Hidalgo said: "I am going to England for many issues, there is no meeting with Leeds executives regarding Ayala, but I have a good relationship with Leeds and if they call me that is fine.

"I think the club is interested in the player but it all depends on whether Ferdinand's transfer to Manchester United is completed. Ayala is one of the main candidates to replace him."

The press in Italy, Spain and England have reported that Ayala will step into Ferdinand's shoes if Leeds accept an improvement on United's original offer, which was believed to be around £20m.

The Argentina centre-back said: "I am flattered that a club like Leeds have shown an interest in me as a possible replacement to Rio Ferdinand.

"My aim is to improve on an economic and sporting level. The club have not said anything about whether they have any offers from other teams or if they will improve my contract.

"For the time being I have a contract and I will respect it. Even if Hidalgo has gone to Leeds, that does not mean anything."

Ayala is halfway through a four-year contract, but rumours of him leaving the Mestalla have been rife for the past year.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been a keen admirer of the 29-year-old former AC Milan defender, although recent events seem to have added a fresh twist.

He plays for Valencia, the reigning Spanish champions and 2 time CL-finalist, and he´s "flattered" by Leeds´ interest?

I´d tell them to feck off as they´re too small.

Sounds like a bizarre statement from Ayala, if infact he said it (which he may not have).

The Guardian don't normally make stuff up - so Ayala obviously needs his head examining - I thought he had more ambition than that.

Its still irrational. Maybe they pasted it from another source. Why would an Argentine International, who plays for the Spanish Champions publicly proclaim his desire to play for a 5th place Premiership side who are in the process of losing all their best players. Something doesn't add up.

Whats his situation there at Valencia? Are they trying to offload him? He's a great player, and they've been a successful team, are they strapped for cash?

Valencia shouldn't need the money. They made a nice chunk of change off of Mendieta last year. Also, Kily is being courted by Inter.

I read an article and it says Valencia are 110m € in debt.

Hmm like another club we know - hardly going up in the world is he?

can't see how that would be the case, unless they've mismanaged their funds.

2 Champions League finals and one La Liga trophy just in the past 3 years. Plus they've sold Mendieta.

This could be Veron all over again. If they get Ayala for peanuts while Rio comes for silly money, he'd better be THE PART (can't see Ayala not looking good at whatever is left of Leeds!).

I say if Leeds delay their decision we should get Rio then bid for Ayala, if anything to drive the price up and see the cnuts getting shafted.

Valenica and Villa Real are as football clubs in debt, but they are bank-rolled by two very rich brothers. One owns a large supermarket chain called Mercadona and the other one of the biggest ceramic factories in the world called Pamesa. Amongst other things - fingers in many pies.

I said in a post the other day that there is no intention or desire to sell Ayala, but with his contract negotiations coming up, they don't want to loose him for nothing (and it does seem he wants a change of scenery). I think that this is why hs agent in in the UK, to stir up some shit as they always like to do.

Stam situation there. Lazio haven't paid! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Hey,

Ferdinand: Leeds to United

Ayala: Valencia to Leeds

Nesta: Lazio to Valencia

Money: Lazio to Manchester United

:D

That's why we should turn our attention to Nesta. Atleast he knows how to mark man-to-man. We could use the money that they owe us for Stam as part of the payment.

I still don't get it. I've watched Ferdinand play for Engalnd on several occassions, and I just just don't see why he is held in such high regard.

The problem is, can Nesta play well in England in his first year? The pace of the game is totally different.

Would Nesta's heart be in it?

I have a friend who thinks that Nesta is so good he could play on Saturn, but I'm not too sure.

Also, think of it financially - Rio and Nesta? Ok, we could get a much cheaper price if we waved the Stam money, but in the accounts it's still the same - spent money. You'll be talking an outlay on two defenders of around 52 million quid.
