AYALA

In short the most realistic defensive purchase for the summer, will go for around the £15mill mark and personally I think is the man we need to sure up that defence.

Opinions / Suggestions?

Most "realistic" signing? I think it is Hofland. He said he want to join us, PSV said they prepare to sell him to us, and United has also confirmed their interest on him. Ayala's case is different -- so far I only heard the player himself said he'd like to play for us, but there is no rigid proof that our club/manager has a firm interest to buy him.

I'd rather it be any two of Tudor, Hofland, Thuram, Ayala, Mexes etc for a sum of about 25m, than one player like Nesta or Cannavaro for the same price. My guess is that we'll buy two CBs, but only if Blanc retires.

ayala is what - 28/29? I suppose not a bad investment for about £15, although not hugely long term. Still, saying that, Larry White is hardly one for the future is he? ;) Plus we need world class defenders asap and if ayala can do the job we need him to do for 3 or 4 seasons - I say grab him!

Over the past two seasons Ayala has been the best defender in Europe, without doubt he'd prove to be better value for money than Nesta or Cannavaro - despite his age. Hofland is obviously the most realistic signing though.

Haven't been impressed with Kev much this year, with the injuries and all. Heard he scored a penno the other day for PSV.

Witout a doubt he is the one we need. About Tudor we need him also. Why? He got Croati to third place at the World cup at the tender age of 20 and he has won a Scuddetto too. So there. :D :) :)

Ayalas contracts talk with Valencia are going slow. The Valencia board have said they wouldnt mind see him go.Is it true that his contract expires in the summer??

No. They would have sold him a long time ago had that been the case.

Judging from his comments,Ayala would definitely prefer to stay with Valencia, said something about his family being more comfortable there in Spain, so unless Valencia really want to get rid of him then it's highly unlikely he will move. Mexes seems likely to stay for at least another year, Nesta and Cannavaro are most definitely not leaving Italy. Chivu is most definitely leaving, which might not be a bad option, and just wondering if we are still looking at David Weir?

On Onefootball.com there is an article saying that Ayala contract talks have broken down and that his current contract runs out at the end of the season. We could maybe get him for free.

From Teamtalk....

Touted United target Roberto Ayala fears Valencia could be forced to cash in on him in the summer even though he wants to stay at The Mestalla.
The Argentina international defender has revealed the La Liga outfit plans to sell him to the highest bidder if they find themselves in financial hardship at the end of the season.

Ayala said: "I have made myself clear to the board that I am happy here and I want to stay.
"But I honestly don't know what will happen and neither can I put the fans' minds at rest by saying that I'll definitely be staying on.
"The directors have told me that, if necessary, then I could be sold on but the idea is that I stay put."

The 28-year-old added: "If they needed to sell me, maybe it would be because it would involve a huge cash injection for the club and of course, for me as well."

Ayala has no shortage of admirers on the European stage, with The Reds reportedly keen on him, along with Serie A giants Lazio, Juventus and Inter Milan. Sir Alex Ferguson is scouring Europe as he looks to replace veteran Laurent Blanc, who is set to retire at the end of the campaign.
