Australian referee threatened after Perth Glory victory

Just when football in this country is gaining all the headlines over the last few weeks for all the right reasons, the ugly side of football raised its head.

Northern Spirit's match with Perth Glory ended with violent threats and a police escort for referee Simon Micallef. Simon Micallef was the referee in the Australia vs. France match at the MCG.

Perth Glory won the controversial match 2-0 but it will be remembered more for a controversial refereeing performance - which included two send-offs and six yellow cards - and the abuse and debris hurled at Micallef after the match.

Spirit club stalwart and former Socceroo Robbie Slater was forced to address a mob of about a 100 fans who shouted "we want the referee" as Micallef was waiting to leave the ground.

This is not what our country needed to have just after a glorious few days with the 1-0 win over Uruguay that brought a much non-football city together as one.

Gez, that's a real worry. I haven't seen the highlights or what happened. Depends who the two sending off's were for and for what reasons. Both Spirit players, then it's inevitable that the Spirit fans would get angry, but waiting to bash the ref up afterwards is stupid. Similar to what happened with Perth and South Melbourne last year.

But, we make it 7 wins from 7 games! Anyway want to try and beat us?
