Surely the league is as important as anything else (although I agree that i would rather win the Champions League ahead of the Premiership) but even in the early stages of the cup against sum unknown vietnamese team there is more crowd noise than at a domestic against the b******s from Merseyside.

It's obvious mate, less daytrippers go to the evening games as they are more hassle

Reason here I feel is that 'real' United fans get into the game where as domestic games its the same people week in week out...

Infact, Barca's got it spot on :)

You've all forgotten the obvious reason...on the weekend matches, the prawn sandwiches have been sitting there since being delivered on Friday evening.
On the midweek evening matches, theyre fresh and therefore supporters are happier, more excited and make more noise.

Just simple logic, really.
;)

Well for what it's worth, we used to take two coachloads to every game, including the evening matches. And him indoors still travels up for the evening matches getting back at around 4am.

I travel up to the matches by train a lot and what I've found is that for the weekend matches, I'll talk to people on the train who maybe go to one match a year/every other year. So, when they're at the match, they're just excited to be there and maybe aren't into the singing so much (and may not even know most of the songs). Whereas, for the mid-week matches, the people I've talked to seem to go to a lot more matches and can concentrate on actually singing/supporting the team rather than admiring the view so to speak.

European nights have always been special occaisions, at all grounds not just OT. Mind you I can remeber driving through the fog from Nottingham (where I was at Uni) to see United v Videoton. The atmosphere was woeful, so was the team we drove home following a 0-0 and what was probably the worst game I'd seen at OT.

I agree that the real fans make the trip whatever the game and KO time, that said don't be fooled that it was always the locals who made it to the game. During the "Cold Years" (late 70's & 80's) the coaches from Torquay, Gateshead & Suffolk made it to every game home and away. Pretty loyal in my book..! You could always tell the partimers during these years, by the big Red gaps in the season ticket holders sections.. ;)
