At this point, what would you settle for this year?

I'm watching MUTV and they're still focusing on Arsenal and Liverpool and whether or not we can catch them. Am I the only one who thinks the league is long gone? It's not the points. Two years ago, I would have said we could still catch Arsenal even if they were 9 points ahead of us in November. But this is a different side with too many injuries.

Honestly, if you told me I could be guaranteed 4th place in the league right now, I would take it. I look at our next 3 matches, and I am genuinely worried about where we're going to be in the league after the Arsenal match.

I'm still hopeful about Europe. But as far as the league goes, I worry about what kind of a rescuing act Keano's going to be face with when he does finally make his return.

A place in Champions League next year, 3 fresh young faces setting the second half of the season alight, a strong finish to the season, Fergie moved upstairs, and O'Neill prowling the touchline next year, with £50m to spend.

Swap you McClaren for O'Neill, and it seems unlikely that there'll be much transfer activity in January but hopefully a striker, but I'm not sure how good, depends on who's available for cheap.

At this point it looks highly unlikely that we can win the league and if we manage to qualify from a CL group containing Juve,Depor, and Basle then that would be quite an achievement in itself. What bothers me most however is not the fact that we aren't winning. No team can win title year after year. But our style of play has become slow and boring. We are really struggling to score. With the players we have I am amazed we can't score goals regularly. What happened to Man Utd's free flowing attacking football where we would be scoring for fun. Obviously like any Red Devils fan I am praying we can turn the season around but that looks unlikely because Arsenal are playing like true champions and they seem to want it more than us. Having said that it is up to us to throw down the gauntlet and really make a fight of it. All these injuries don't help but hopefully we can overcome these obstacles. The transfer window cant come soon enough because we need another striker A.S.A.P.

I'd settle for finding the spirit and will to fight for the win and for that adored red shirt.

I don't care what position we finish in nor how many trophies we will get if any.

All I want is to see them fight for the win and to see them hungry for championships.

AGREED 100%

At this point, I'd settle for NO MORE INJURIES!!! The way we are going, if we can put out our first 11 at some point during this season it will be a miracle!

agreed.

it will only be at that point that it will be fair to judge our true performance.. although it is quite worrying to know that our rotation players can't do a good job anymore.

The fact is that our injury crisis isn't any better or worse than anyone else. The more that we keep focusing on this as our excuse for the poor play the worse that its going to be in the long run. Lets face it, whatever team we put out there they aren't playing with the passion of previous seasons and this in my opinion is not down to the personel. I belive that our problems stem from the training ground and a lack of motivation their, also the constant changing of tactics doesn't help.
In short we need a better training system one that teaches the lads how to play well with each other whatever the team we play, right now the players are playing as individuals an not as a team

agreed, to some extent however.

IMO the injuries we are having are quite terrible. For one we have lost 3 very very capable midfielders. Our new signing Rio has been injured 3 times since he's been here.. now Gaz is also out.. i think the injuries are playing an important part in our confidence as a team as well.

With the training, i agree about the changing tactics, but i also believe it's to compensate for the missing players. we would have stuck with 4-4-1-1 had all of us been fit. although it's not a solid plan in the EPL atleast we wouldn't have changed the look of the team and the midfield would have been more solid.

the team isn't gelling together yet.. and maybe that's something we really have to look at.. our depth is also a worry matter.. esp with the injuries i think we're in a bad shape. No substitutes were used last night and that says a lot about our manager's confidence in the bench.

Finish 3rd or higher in the PL. A few good signings in January. A decent run in the FA cup. Win the CL. A few more good additions in the summer. Fergie retires (as planned all along) and moves upstairs with McClaren in as manager.

Totally agree with that.

Or in answer to the topic question, "SELF-RESPECT".

Seeing as McClaren has less managerial experience than Moyes and assuming Everton continue their successful run and qualify for Europe, he might be the better option. Seemingly he is a tough single minded scot, possibly in the Fergie mould. He would take a more objective view of our squad having not worked with any of them before. Either way Kenyon will have to be persuaded to abandon the condition that SAF's successor has to have a proven track record of achievement at the higheset level. Neither McClaren,Moyes or even O'Neill would qualify, given those pre requisites. Of course Fergie's latest pronouncement may have put the kibosh on all that although such decisions are surely not entirely in his hands I would have thought.

agreed spinoza. we have to accept no less than the CL as it seems we have geared up for that pre-season, certainly our style of play is not suited to the Prem, if that is the way we have prepared and prioritised then to win it is a must.

My modern day aim for Utd is allways the league & / or the CL. But ill also settle for an F.A. Cup as despite its dwindling status their is still somethinh about it. Weve won it the most times and id like it to stay that way.
Its unrealistc to "expect" the PL & CL every season but one can allways hope.

I'll settle for any trophy, minimum 3rd in the EPl and a clear intent from the club that they are going to start a rebuilding programme with young players. Move SAF upstairs and bring in a younger manager to mould his own team (and not SGE )

Sounds good to me..... :)

Bit worried by some of the answers here.

Seems like trophies are the all important thing then. :(

Well trophies are nice, but I'd sooner watch entertaining football every week and win nothing, than grind out results and win everything. Winning like that would obviously give us something to celebrate, not denying it - but I'd sooner see us playing good stuff.

Me too, but playing entertaining stuff bags loads of goals normally, and if combined with a solid back four would win trophies without a problem. The two go hand in hand IMO.

Obviously good football and trophies would be everything we want.

But if it came to a choice, I'd go for entertainment every time.

In my book United will only ever do well when we play attacking football so the two go hand in hand.

Cheers to you Livvie, No title, no trophy no problem as long as the players play their hearts out every game.
