Asprilla Deal Started In A Kebab Shop

By Scott Thornberry
Date: 25/8/2002

Yes, the Tino deal all started in a kebab shop, claims the Sunday Sun. Their sports editor, Dylan Younger, received a call in the early hours of Sunday August 4th from George Reynolds. The reporter happened to be in a kebab shop in Newcastle at the time.

Yes, the Tino deal all started in a kebab shop, claims the Sunday Sun.

Their sports editor, Dylan Younger, received a call in the early hours of Sunday August 4th from George Reynolds. He happened to be in a kebab shop in Newcastle at the time.

The call at that time was regarding the Paul Gascoigne but the Sunday Sun man said to George to turn his attention to Asprilla, who was in the region looking for a club. He had been talking top Tino earlier that evening about his hopes of returning to english football. At that time Tino was setting his sights on the likes of Sunderland or Middlesbrough, he hadn't even heard of Darlington.

Reynolds said how much he lived Tino. "Tino's back over here! Do you think he would come to Darlington? How much would he want? Have you got his number?" asked Reynolds.

George got his telephone number of Younger and the seed was sewn for Tino's arrival.

Asprilla spoke to Younger and asked about the club. He found out about our new stadium and Reynolds and the whole third division setup. "How much would they pay?" asked the columbian. He was told to ask George.

Now Reynolds and Asprilla have agreed a deal between them. The deal is for two years with a one year option. The rumour is that he will get 6k a week. It all hangs on whether he can get a work permit.

Asprilla has played in only five of Columbias last 14 games. That is well below the required 75%. But he has been injured and but in truth he should have no problems getting the permit as he is obvious class. Plus Juninho got his permit even though he fell short of the requirements.

I doubt that it will be. He hasn't played in anywhere near 75% of Columbia's internationals in the last 2 years and I doubt that he would have even if he had been fit for all of them. Signing for such a lowly outfit isn't likely to strengthen the argument for him being granted and exception.

I think he has played in the last 5
And he still has to be approved for his work permit

You could argue the opposite. How likely are Darlington to ever get someone filling the requirements? If it was Arsenal you would tell them to stuff it but you know this is probably the only chance Darlington will ever have to sign someone of some pedigree.

Poor Tino, he must be so broke. His club in Brazil didn't pay him 9 months of wages! :(

Not sure the department of immigration will find this a convincing argument <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Well, I guess the rule is there to guarantee that a team will only take players who are deemed extraordinary or definitely better than the ones they can get domestically. Unfortunately for Darlington, the 75% is set with the likes of Chelsea in mind.

Put it differently, can Darlington get any domestic player who is nearly as good as Tino?

Topic name: "Darlington"
Result: I have no recollection of that thread

Two days later: "Asprilla to Darlington! Yes, Darlington!!" (notice the repetition of !!, absolutely crucial!!!!, oh err, and Asprilla obviously)

You should get with the times and work on your marketing skills mate. ;)

old news mate.

You need to sack your researchers.

You also need to read posts that maybe relevant, bearing in mind. I have never seen any other topic slightly related to Darlington on here - then suddenly 2 pop up.

Whats the chances they are about the same thing.

;)

Im waiting for a " Rio signs for Manchester United" Thread from ya now. <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

 I didn't start this thread to start with. I was just pointing out your earlier topic didn't have any appeal (Darlington is not worth the wait for the page to load!) so that's why we seem to have overlooked it until we saw something more interesting (a link between Asprilla and Darlington). And I :wink:ed you jic.

Then you can tell Thumper the next time you see him.

I never saw the other thread. I just heard it on the news yesterday morning on my way to work and I thought "holy feck" how the mighty have fallen.

I hear that we might be signing Rio before the dealdine as well ;)

What happened to him? He thought that he was still a good player...

<a href="http://www.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=105527&clid=&cpid=&Title=Tino+turns+his+back+on+Darlo" target="_blank">APPARENTLY NOT - 17K WASN'T ENOUGH IT SEEMS</a>

17K a week for a third division player!!! thats madness. they should pick up 4 or 5 decent players from the free transfer market for that!

I suspect they'll not rue his decison in the long run.
