Arsenal completed a fantastic week when Islington Council gave approval for a planning application to build a new 60,000-capacity stadium at Ashburton Grove.

The Islington councillors voted 34-7 in favour - with one abstention - of the club's plans for a state-of-the-art stadium, half-a-mile from their current home at Highbury.

The decision is still subject to further approval by London's mayor, Ken Livingstone, who has 14 days to block or back the scheme, but Monday's decision by Islington council will come as a huge relief to the Arsenal board.

united have to go out and expand old trafford even further!

a capital club with 60000 is to appealing and united need more to appeal to world class players.

we can fill 80000 arsenal would struggle.

peter kenyon needs to realise that united with 67000 against arsenal in the capital with 60000 is dangerous to uniteds reputation!

What the feck, just because another team has a close capacity to yours (although 7,000 is quite a big difference) that threatens your reputation. I thought the competition was on the pitch not off it.

capital clubs of most countries usually rule in the football stakes.

yet the north in england have dominated most of englands trophies (have a london club actually won the european cup?)

if arsenal got a 60 odd thousand capacity united would need to better it by far imo. wenger is thinking along the same lines, if arsenal have the same average crowd (roughly) why would a world star prefer manchester over london?

He's got a valid point. The extra revenue from ticket sales alone would enable the Arse to pay more for the worlds best. London is always the destination foriegners think about when they are contemplating the Premiership imo.

Yes your points are valid, but first of all you need to sort out your team as that's the main threat to your reputation.

Instead of ploughing money into an already highh capacity staduim buy a couple of top class defenders. The main reason why Man Utd have dominated is because on the field over the last few years you have swept all in front of them and this has enabled them to create a mass world audience and earn millions in merchandising.

united have to go to 80000 imo

they have the support its fecking obvious

if any of you were united business men would u not increase the capacity?

It's not all about business you know, success on the field breeds success off it, sort out your team problems than look at increasing your capacity

i know its not all about business

i am one of the few thousand that sings their bollocks off every home game!

uniteds capacity could be increased and filled easily at the moment and only the unambtious would not try and increase the capacity at the moment.

basically agree with you, but you´re wrong here. germany, spain, italy and england are imo the 4 biggest football countries in europe and in italy, germany and england the most successful clubs do not come from the capital.

germany - bayern munich
england - united, liverpool
italy - juventus, milan, inter

I'm not disagreeing that, but instead of ploughing money into increasing the capacity of an alaredy big staduim, use you money to bring in a couple of top class defenders, or at least keep a lot of money in the transfer kitty for your next mananger. For now with all the other merchandsing taking place the 67,000 capacity is enough, so i would concentrate on the team for the moment instead of increasing your capacity just because Arsenal have increased thiers.

including jens post in this!

who is the main clubs of each country?

if i was in control of united and was looking for extra revenue opps at the moment, it has to be the crowd!

we sell out whether its lille or real madrid!

we should be increasing the capacity the way its going.

well, we must think long term ... ideally we´d put some money in the team now and "finish" old trafford ... if we increase the capacity we wont do so because arsenal are about to build a new stadium ... im sure theyve been thinking about adding the "finishing touches" (new south stand, filled corners) for a while now

you´ll probably fall behind if you stay at anfield for much longer ...

i dont think we could fill an 80k stadium for every game tho .. there´re still some tickets going for the derby game and quite a couple of cl matches went on general sale, too

long term there probably is no way around increasing the capacity ..

every home game will be a sell out

i do believe all tickets are now sold jens

united would sell out within a 80000 capacity easily as long as they were doing well!

We don't even fill that for the Worthington Cup games  , the Liverpool board have taken the right stance IMO. They have set out to increase the capacity of Anfield or move, but have delayed proceedings to concentrate on continueing to build a championship winning squad; which is the most important thing. I expect us to make a decision at the end of the season, although we've had a lot of problems with the local council.

Which is why IMO you should concentrate on the team now and sort out your problems before further expanding your staduim

whether u have a little success this year or not i do honestly believe a club has to have a big ground to go with thier image to be able to attract players!

arse have got that and its not suprising that wenger only signed this week, he knew the club knew that they would get clearence.

if liverpool arent ambitious enough they will fall behind.

the Arse were always going to get the go ahead for this development and Wenger was always going to stay...ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

youre right re: derby ...

theyre only selling some returned tickets

i dont believe that arse wanker was always gonna stay.

it was only once he knew that they were gonna get the big capacities and be able to attract even more world class players that convinced him to stay.

anfield´s a quite old stadium and you dont make much money with that .. i dont like it myself, but you have to have a certain number of executive boxes, cos thats where the real money comes from ..

if you stay at anfield expanding the main stand is a must because that stand is a monument .. the anfield road stand´s a bit too small imo .. do you think you could add a second tier to the kop?

you must be as gullible as Islington Council if you believe that.

stop being such a prick!

whether u hate united or not, it has nothing to do with wenger holding back on his contract!

why else do u think it took so long and dont u think its a coincedence that happened in the same week that they got the go ahead?

the whole Wenger will he won't he? contract saga was engineered by Arsenal to come to a head the weekend before the council decision on the new ground.
What a surprise that Wenger signed 3 days before Islington Council's decision.

r u a parrot?

Arsenal's fanbase is not as large as ours or Liverpool's. Nevertheless, its big. They'll have no trouble selling out a 60,000 seater stadium for all of their home matches, especially given the style of football that Wenger has brought to Arsenal. They are by far the best attacking team in the Premiership, and have genuinely world-class players like Henry, Pires and Vieira. They play the type of football that fans all over the world love to see - whether they support Arsenal or not.

United should rebuild the south stand into mirror image of the north... that would take the capacity to 81k.

i've seen Arsenals plans and they're not that impressive IMO.

can't see the cost of a new stand being more than 15million... that equates to one player...

But how could they be impressive, my dear boy, the plans were not hatched by anyone having anything to do with United, so they must be second rate.

hang on..i don't like OT.

Arsenal: i don't like the way the stands swoop up and down.. especially behind the goals,it looks weird...
