Ange Postecoglou | New Spurs boss on 4 year contract

Out of interest, what would the annual table look like just up to the point they lost Van de Ven I think up to Match day 8?

Pretty much like this FYI

Good response mate, made some very good points there.

So where are you personally with Ange, would you like to see a change?

Firstly, I'd like to make it clear I wanted Ange as soon as Conte went. I was really excited for his approach, and especially due to how he handled a rebuild at Celtic, buying in lots of cheaper asian players who did really well, and youth.

However - I haven't seen any of that, personally. He's refused to adapt and a lot of the above form is skewed by how soon other teams got used to the idea that we'd just have a suicidal and naive approach to every game. So, reluctantly, he's not at all the answer IMO.

I don't know what the answer is, but I am glad Poch is in the US and unlikely to be called on - as I don't think he's much different, either. A good year or two followed by at least 18 months of regression masked by a CL final.
Part of me wouldn't mind us just putting some faith in letting Mason have a go - he's done well, IMO, when he's covered before, and none of these "established" winners have done much, ultimately. As much as Sherwood had the personality of a nightclub toilet, he got results and unearthed a lot of youth. I don't want to give him all the credit for Kane, but he's due a big lump of it. So why not someone who has seen what has and hasn't worked for the past 4-5 years (Mason, that is, not Tim)? We didn't give Kieron McKenna much of a chance and he's a PL manager now (not top 4 quality, but then again is the Ipswich squad PL quality?)

Either that or we've had links to Terzic, who could be a good shout. Iraola is flavour of the month, and I wouldn't be against Howe if he was feasible (considering he's very much tied to the south and has been quite irked at the job there at times). I'm mostly glad that Potter isn't available, but worried that Southgate is

Over a year? They finished 5th last season.

Why isn't their injury crisis believable?

There's room for him to do better with the current squad and man management is part of that so if he's lost the dressing room he'll need to go, but the bolded is exactly what I'm talking about. What is English football's problem with football that leans more towards proactive than reactive, and why exactly does it "not work at this level"? It literally worked last season

It didn’t work last season. They had a great start (albeit with some average performances), but take a look at how many losses they had in 2024.

Everyone is working with injuries and we have seen them play just as badly with a full team.

It’s also nothing to do with him being proactive, it is the extreme positions they take up for 100% of game time. No adaptation, no variation, no tact. Just full on, even when they are in good positions.

It’s naive, and he has been found out, and his arrogance at reporters questions and “woe is me” attitude because he has a few injuries is ridiculous. They have been awful for over a year. He has no excuses.

Since the start of November 2023, they've lost 24 of 50 league matches. They were massively propped up by that opening 10 game unbeaten run (and us, Chelsea and Newcastle being shite for 3/4 of the season).

Only Wolves, Leicester and Southampton have lost more games than them this season.

That table isn't too bad then, in and around Newcastle and Villa is where I'd expect you to be.

I'm Scottish and a Rangers fan, so I didn't have quite the starry eyed view of Big Ange as some. Admittedly this might bias my views, but I always thought the job he done at Celtic was a bit over rated.

Don't get me wrong, he done well, and he rebuilt the team from the shambles that Lennon left, but he also benefitted from Rangers not strengthening when they were on top which helped convince Gerrard to leave mid season, which helped tipped the scales in Celtics favour, and their superior finances and setup has helped keep them there ever since.

The guys that he got from the J League were good to stand out in Scottish football, but wouldn't be of the requisite quality for a Spurs team looking to challenge near the top of the table. He had the same stance with Celtic in Europe, refusing to adapt, and while their performances were brave, they ultimately were soundly beaten by better teams.

I said at the time on here that he'd play an attacking brand of football, and wouldn't waver on it no matter what, but ultimately i couldn't see it being as successful down here because there's a gulf in class to the top teams in terms of quality and consistency that I'm not sure he's overcome before.

I said the same about his apparent "eye for talent" when they hired him. It's all well and good finding players that do well in Scotland, but we all know the quality is shite so there's basically a much wider pool of players to pick from and still find someone who looks good.

As for his European record, winless in the 2022/23 CL group stage, losing four with an aggregate score of 13-2. Only points came from two draws against Shakhtar Dontesk, who had to play their "home" game in Warsaw.

In 2021/22 they were knocked out by Midtjylland in the CL qualifiers, having taken the lead in both legs. Ended up third in their Europa League group after losing 4-3 to Real Betis (a game they were winning 2-0), 4-0 at home and 3-2 away (another game they were winning) to Bayer Leverkusen. They then dropped to the Conference League where they were beaten 5-1 on aggregate by Bodo/Glimt.

He's not learned his lesson at all. Last season they lost 4-1 at home to Chelsea (with that ridiculous high-line despite having fewer players on the pitch) to end their unbeaten start, and finished the season with 5 defeats in their last 7, losing to Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and City with an aggregate score of 15-4 across those five losses. They've lost seven of their last 10 games (with their only win coming against Southampton).

This one is a bit more telling. 64 points from the last 50 PL games

Shows you how bad it's been since the above.
