Serie A - Juventus to sign Anelka
Juventus are set to sign Nicolas Anelka to a short-term contract until the end of the season.

"It can be a good move for the short term, then at the end of the season we'll evaluate what must be done," Juve director general Beppe Marotta told SkySport Italia.

"He is filling a hole. It is a five-month contract with an option for the second season, if things go well.

"Anelka's arrival rules out any other transfers, because in this stage of the transfer window there are no other opportunities."

Anelka, 33, has failed to settle in China since moving to Shanghai Shenhua last season, with reports that the club have failed to pay wages on time.

Juve are looking for firepower after Athletic Bilbao refused to sell Spain striker Fernando Llorente ahead of his free transfer move in the summer.

With Nicklas Bendtner failing to impress since joining on loan from Arsenal in the summer, Juve only had Alessandro Matri and Fabio Quagliarella as out-and-out strikers.

The former France forward has played for Chelsea, Bolton, Manchester City, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Fenerbahce, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal in a journeyman career.

Juventus, the defending Italian champions, are top of Serie A.

He's played for some amount of good clubs, this fella. Now he could be picking up a winners medal in Serie A.

Drogba could also be on a move, they're not paying him on time either and I think both could cancel their deals if they wanted. Going to China when they could still offer something to a few big clubs in Europe was a silly idea from the beginning.

Anelka will be a stop gap signing for Juve as they wait for Llorente.

Nice of you to explain what the article meant as i wasn't quite sure if I'd gotten it ;)

He must be one of the richest footballers around.

speaking of these kinds of players, IIRC eto'o is out of a deal this summer or next. After swelling his bank account, do you think he'll move to a proper club?

No, he signed a 3-year deal in 2011 so there'll still be a year to go. He'll be 33 when the deal expires.

They should have got Drogba instead.

I suspect he was asking for significantly more money and Juventus have been very financially prudent since their return to Serie A.

They have been financially prudent long before that.

In comparison the other Italian giants, sure, but they still splashed the cash when they needed to. In that one summer they bought Buffon, Thuram, Nedved and Salas they spent over £100m, Zidane and Inzaghi didn't pay for all of it. They weren't afraid to spend a world record fee for Rossi and Baggio or spend big on Boniek, Laudrup, Häßler and Kohler either. I don't see them competing at that level any more.

I think that they stopped spending the big money after Roby Baggio's departure. The 2001-2002 season was probably one of Juventus most shrewd transfer windows ever. They sold Zidane and Inzaghi for ridiculous money and brought in

a) the best keeper of his generation at a quite a young age. (Buffon)
b) One of the best defenders of his generation (Thuram)
c) One of the most creative players of his generation (Nedved)

and Salas.

at a deficit of around 37m euros (its more or less the money we've spent for Berbatov)

That's not big money

With the way transfer fees have inflated since then that equates to about £50m. That's big money in my book. Completely irrelevant though.

His agent must be one of the richest agents around, morelike.

Yes, but he earned a lot, for sure.

Classic example of a footballing money whore - his legacy will be for successfully picking up a paycheck, not winning

His club history is amazing though, PSG > Arsenal > Real Madrid > PSG again > Liverpool(loan) > Manchester City > Fenerbahce > Bolton > Chelsea > Shanghai > Juventus.

With that money you could have got a 'big name' signing. However when one compares the quality they got and the money they spent, it was still a bargain.

I agree with you that prices has gone inflated these days. 20M for Henderson? Had football gone mad?

should have stayed with Arsenal -

Came to Chelsea when they had injuries and did well. Hope he does good with Juve

Tell that to his trophy cabinet.

Amen. What has he won? 2 Premier Leagues,(Chelsea/Arsenal) 3 FA Cups,(Chelsea/Arsenal) Champions league (Real Madrid) and Turkish League.(Fenerbahce)

and probably some I'm missing. Looks like he'll win Serie A with Juventus, too.

Not bad for someone who'll only be remembered as a mercenary.

He was good enough to have been remembered in the same breath as Henry, he probably earned less cash at the end of the day.

I'll be forever grateful to him for that terrible penalty.

All those signing on fees add up, though.

Think this is a step backward for WBA. He has long since passed it.

That's hilarious! They must've done it on purpose, it's an official video ffs. He looks so glum!

He always looks miserable. When he scored against us in the 1999 semi-final replay, he looked fecking miserable, and that was before it was ruled offside. They say money can't buy happiness and there's your proof.
