This guy is the real deal. He is light years better than Henman.
This might seem a bold statement, but for me it's a matter of when he's the world's no. 1, rather than if (probably when Federer retires...). A multiple grand slammer. I would say he is better the Djorkovic or Nadal, even if Djorkovic has the better temprament. I think he'll reach his first grand slam final this year and of course lose to Federer. My prediction for sports personality of the year in 2008.

He is shit, no where near the class of Federer or Nadal, there also several young players who are better than him Djokovic, etc.

To rate him over Nadal is ludicrous, as a teen Nadal has beaten the best player of all time twice to win majors, what has Murray done?

In addition he had Federer on the ropes in the Wimbledon Final, until Federer showed just why he is the best ever, great match it was.

You obviously have your head stuck up your arse Alex. Apart from Federer he is the only player to have all the shots. Fast serve, great ground strokes on either side, fantastic touch at the net, pace and great footwork.
Of course Nadal is currently better, but Murray is nowhere near the finished article. He is actually a very young 20 years old in tennis terms.

The funny thing is that for once the media is not over hyping a British talent cos they don't like him. Yet he's arguably the best young sportsman we've currently got, and probably have had in decades. Take your specs off.

Murray is talented but Djokovic in my opinion a better prospect. Djokovic is also 20 years old and has already been in a grand slam final and the last time he played against Murray he beat him 6-1 6-0. There's lots of time for Murray, all he needs is patience and to calm down a little during matches.

I don't know why so many people in the UK dislike him.

It's mainly the fact that he refuses to be acknowledged as a Brit, and instead as a Scotsman. He made this very clear when he went round with the colours of Trinidad and Tobago during the last world cup.

Shouldn't he have been supporting his own nation then...

hang on...

So fecking what, that's football and he's Scotish. He also plays Davis Cup for Britain.

Maybe he was being smart and realised it would put are God awful English tabloids off him.

Nadal is miles better, younger, and still getting better, doubt Murray will ever close the gap enough to be considered a rival of Nadal, ever

Shit? Come on now

Murray lost virtually all of last season, missing two grand slams (clearly not fully recovered for the US Open), and he still nearly qualified for the year end masters and broke into the top ten in the world. Clearly he's lacked the physicality and fitness that someone like Nadal had at the same age, looking at him now though, that might be a thing of the past. Should remember at last years Australian Open, Nadal only came through in 5 sets after being 2-1 down in his fourth round contest over Murray. Writing him off like you are is classic nonsense Alex, the kind that comes back to bite you in the arse. I don't think he'll reach a grand slam final this season, but I don't say that with too much confidence. The kid's special, just a shame he feels the need to be so, well, Scottish :(

I've predicted Murray will never win a Grand Slam. And I still stand by it unfortunately.

I'm not getting on his back for it. Just answering the guy's question.

Top ten, no better. I'd wager he never wins a slam

I don't support Murray. I see he has talent, and I suspect he'll do well, but I don't support him because he is British, like the media wants me to do every time Wimbledon roles around. He's not British. He has made that very clear. He is Scottish, and I won't support a Scotsman for being Scottish any more than I'd support a Serbian for being Serbian, or a Spaniard for being Spanish.

Saying that, I do think he has bags of talent. He's probably behind Djokovic in turns of raw talent (that boy has LOADS), but ahead of Nadal. Nadal uses his physique too much for my liking. He's obvioiusly talented, but not as silky as some of his peers.

Of course all of this is largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things because they all are going to try and have to compete with greatest tennis player every to have lived. And Roger Federer is only 26. They've got a long wait until he steps aside.

Brad you might be right about Murray becoming a good pro, but he stills has a long way to go. All this talk about being in the top ten is nonsense, tennis is about the top dogs even more so than football. I don't think he will ever match Nadal, who is clearly a phenom, and still getting younger.

Come back after he wins a couple grand slams, and I will change my words, but he needs at least two, as Any Roddick won the US Open in 03 and well he is shit, and he still won a major. So your guy still has a ways to go, is their reason for you Brits to be excited, yeah he is worlds better than Timmy, but in actuality is not on the level of the great players in the game

He's out of the Australian Open now.

Ay, you have to say he got a wretched draw though, Tsonga broke through last year as the real deal beating Hewitt at his second home of Queens. 38 in the world, he'll be at least on the tail of the top 10 by the year end for my money. You'd still like to see Murray beating him at this stage, but that's what tricky first round contests are all about. Long wait for the French now

Bad fecking loss for Murray.

Thought this would be his year to come through. Hope the loss of Gilbert is not to answer for it

Bad loss against a good opponent. He's still only 20 and is bound to pick up bad results here and there. I still think he'll get to a Grand Slam final this year, I bet on the the us open. But I would expect him to really break through in 2 years time or so.

Alex, every tennis pro out there (weo Davydenko...) begs to differ.

Rams, your retorts mean nothing until Murray wins a major or two, maybe he will it'd be fun to see him win Wimbledon, but Im not yet convinced

Federer needs to step his game up. Bad start of the year by his standards.

"I don't think he has changed his game a whole lot since the first time I played him and I really thought he would have done," said Federer. "He is going to have to grind it very hard in the next few years if he is going to play this way. He stands way behind the court. You have to do a lot of running and he tends to wait for the mistakes of his opponent.
"I gave him the mistakes but overall, in a 15-year career, you want to look to win a point more often, rather than wait for the other guy to miss. Who knows, he might surprise us all."

Federer = Wenger

If Murray sorts out his consistency he will win a grand slam. He has as much tallent as anyone bar maybe Fedz. Djokovic is great and so is Nadal but both focus on physicality, stronger, fitter and faster. If Murray sorts out his fitness and consistency he will give anyone a run.

Also the fact that he's scottish pisses the english off to no end, personally i find this hilarious.

Good post, talk sense. Nice to see an englishman post with sense about Murray.

To think a scotsman admitted he wouldn't be supporting England at a world cup

Because every englishman has nothing but admiration and general good will towards scotland and they all wish us all the best/success.

Tennis is sort of toffish anyway, Tim Henman was a darling for the english media. Boring, calm all the time, well to do and quite posh. I actually liked Henman as a man and as a player but come wimbledon i wanted him out, in the same way i want england out of any major competition because i can't stand the medias over exaggeration and then when it goes tits up the linching they dish out as well.

Murray is much more unlikeable than Henman, he's scottish, admited he didn't want england to win the world cup (shock horror), pulls out of davis cup tie, has poor temprament but happens to be the most tallented "British" player i can remember.

But wait and see, a common theme of successful scots is that when they are successful they are "british" but when they fail or are losers they are "scottish".

True for sure, believe this one is on clay though, by far his weakest surface that said he is way off form

Dubai is on hardcourts and he has pretty much owned the tournament for the last 5 years.

That's what I thought, someone was telling me it was clay, which would have made it understandable. It will be interesting to see how the next three Grand Slams play, still reckon Federer will win the last two, especially Wimbledon. The US Open will be more difficult for him, but as the US has shit for players for the most part now, the crowd usually adopts him as there favorite( the Agassi-Fedrerer semi in 2004 part of which took place in 70 mph winds it was one of the craziest matches I have ever seen)
